Expansion draft will be interesting with our NMC players.

We get to protect 7 forwards, 3 defenseman and one goalie.

Kane, Toews, Seabs and Keith have to be protected due to NMC.

That leaves 5 fowards and 1 D left to be protected.

The last D protected will be Jokiharju. He'll be on his first year off his ELC.

Have to imagine Saad, Strome, and DeBrincat will be protected which leaves 2 forward spots left. Hard to predict those now since the roster will look different by then.

This means the Hawks should not sign Barratt and Mitchell to close the season because they will burn a year off their ELC and end up exposed.

There's a good chance both are playing too far into the spring to be able to sign after their seasons are done anyway.

Hopefully that's the case and they can be signed in the off season. Then they'd be safe. Same goes for Krys. Boqvist and Beaudin are safe because their contracts slide.

It's fair to think that the FO is aware of the expansion implications and would hold off signing any of them on account of that anyway. None of those players is going to push you into a cup contender or help with some playoff run. But I don't want to make that assumption, either. :)

In my dreams, the teams get a compliance buyout and the Hawks use it on Seabrook

likely yes, both Mitchell and Barratt might not be available to sign.. but you can always entice teams NOT to take players, we saw that with Vegas.

if these kids are good enough to be here, sign them - we can't risk pissing off someone when they wanted to sign and we refused them. Krys likely signs this year because his team should be hot ass, but Barratt and Mitchell should have long seasons so hopefully point is moot there.

Pretty sad that we may have to deal with Seabs being protected 3 years from now. Could lose another really good player because of his contract.
Have you seen his contract on a buyout calculator? Absolutely brutal

1. BUT FIRST the NHL CBA may be ended with notice by Sept. 2019 .....if so Teams must complete 2019/20 season before any lock-out and play suspended till new CBA
..so if they cannot agree to new CBA there will be either no games in 2020/21 season or only a partial schedule of games for the remainder of that season after a resumption because of a New CBA agreed on...

2.Seattle not starting any operations for a season and no expansion draft till at EARLIST the 2021/22 srason (it could also be 2022/23 if there arena is not ready for 2021/22)

3. THERE COULD BE a compliance buy-out allowed with a new CBA ...It is unclear where NMCS would have protection from this ...but other contracts would be certainly eligible for such compliance buy'outs.

4. ANY NMC's still on the book by the Expansion Draft (2021/22 or 2022/23 ...whenever Seattle is ready to put a team in their Arena) which would be in late June of 2021 or 2022 would of course need to be protected ...BUT again there could be ANOTHER Compliance Buy-out or more than 1 allowed as of July 1st of that same year of the Expansion Draft...Again we do not know if guys onNMC would be ported from these compliance buy-outs given by the league to help teams re-set their cap situations..

5..So if Compliance Buy-outs are given for a new CBA (if it goes a half-season of lock-out it would be in early 2021 before the 20/21 season could be resumed) and then probably in June 2021 or June 2022 after the Expansion Draft ....then depending on how many compliance buy-outs involved there probably will be either 2 for each even or just 1 for each event (New CBA and after Expansion Draft...So 2to 4 Compliance Buy-Outs or possibly a 1 +2 or a 2 +1 if they want only 3rd total for the 21st events.

Let us be conservative and propose just 1 CB for each of the 2 events.

Here are the options for the NHL on the CB and NMC issues:

A. Protection for NMCs fir All resultant CBs of the 2 events

B.No protection of NMCs from the CBs of the 2 events.

C. Protection of NMC contracts from Compliance Buy-outs for only 1 type of re-set ...(not sure if that would be via New CBA but Not via Expansion or vice versa).

Clearly the NHL has some thinking to do as to whether there should be blanket protection for NMC Co tracts as a sort of guaranteed contract vs. the reason they give Compliance Buy-Outs which is to help teams re-set after a major structural change in the League (either New CBA or an Expansion stocking of a new team).

HOPEFULLY ...they allow NO protection for players with NMC contracts from any Compliance Buy-Out.

6. If players with NMC Co tracts can be Compliance Bought -Out in such a re-set situation ...And if we only get a total of 1 each for each of the 2 events:

THEN regarding our Blackhawks :

WE would buy'out Keith or Seabrook. ..not sure which goes first) at each of the opportunities. .

Means both are gone from our books with no Cap consequence by the start of the 2021/23 season ...OR one of them is off the books for that start and the other will come off as early as July 1st 2022 if the Expansion Draft is delayed to late June 2032.

There is 1 Caveat this...the "special" contract category with re-capture whichis attached on the Keith deal.

Maybe Bettany still insists he cannot let us get off the hook from that ...

So even though his NMC would not protect him from a CB ,the Re-Capure if it still sticks effectively makes using a CB on Keith illogical..we would not do it.

Instead we COULD use that CB on another NMC Co tract that has no re-capture attached.

In this scenario ..we COULD use the CB on TOEWS or KANE if they still are on the team.

In that case :

.Seabrook given CB before resumption of 20/21 season ...probably January 2031 if we played a half season from then after late 2020 New CBA Agreement .

And if we cannot use the next CB for Expansion on Keith then we might be giving a CB to TOEWS or Kane by July 1st 2021 or by July 1st 2022 if it got delayed a year.

We need Seabs to retire before then. Is he really willing to be one of the worst players in the league the last 3 or 4 years of his deal and hurt his teammates’ chances for a little more money? I hope not.

$650 million for the franchise and an $800 million renovation. Good luck to the banks that finance this.

My only surprise is that their promotional material had a whole lot of red and black, making me think that the Emerald City will have a different color scheme than I think most of us anticipated.

I also saw this concept, and I've got to say I think this would work:
