Figured given all the crazy things that have happened in the 25 year history of MLS it would be fun to list weird, odd and obscure facts pertaining to the league:
Sal Caccavale entered a match for NYRB vs Columbus in stoppage time and scored a goal in his 3 minutes of action. It was the only MLS match he ever played in, and thus he has the league record for highest goals per 90 minutes.
For years Clint Mathis was the all time Metros goalscoring leader. What is even more remarkable: The team never lost a match in which he scored.
At least two teams at one point played home matches at high school stadiums (Chicago and Dallas).
In the MLS era only one non MLS team has won the US Open Cup: The Rochester Raging Rhinos in 1999.
At MLS Cup 1999 fans invaded the pitch with a banner demanding the league get rid of the shootout. Oddly enough they did just that.
In a 2003 match vs DC while down a man Metros coach Bob Bradley exploited a loophole to put 16 year old Eddie Gaven into the match as an emergency keeper by removing a field player and having Tim Howard act as field player. After the first stoppage they switched positions and Gaven would score the OT winner in one of the most memorable moments in team history.
