News & Notes
Harvard D Danny Biega (CAR) was named the ECAC’s Best Defensive Defenseman and earned a spot on the All-ECAC First Team. Biega was also a finalist for ECAC Player of the Year as well. In 22 ECAC games this season, he led all conference defensemen with 23 points (eight goals, 15 assists). Overall, Biega finishes the season leading Harvard in 25 assists and finishing second on the team with 35 points in 34 games.
Denver G Sam Brittain (FLA) set a new WCHA Tournament record for the most saves in a single game with 68 saves versus Minnesota-Duluth in the semi-final game on Mar. 17.
Merrimack G Joe Cannata (VAN) was named to the All-Hockey East First Team. In 27 conference games this season, he posted a 13-9-5 record. His .928 save percentage in conference play ranked second among all Hockey East goaltenders. In Hockey East play this season, he allowed just 27 even-strength goals.
Boston University D Adam Clendening (CHI) was named to the All-Hockey East First Team. He finished second among all conference defensemen with 20 points (two goals, 18 assists) in 27 conference games. Overall, Clendening currently leads Boston University in defensemen scoring with 31 points (three goals, 28 assists) through 37 games.
Cornell D Nick D’Agostino (PIT) was named to the All-ECAC Second Team. He finished tied for seventh among all conference defensemen with 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in 21 conference games this season. His four power play goals co-led the ECAC among all defensemen in conference play as well. Overall, D’Agostino has posted 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists) in 32 games to date. His six power play goals leads Cornell.
Boston College D Brian Dumoulin (CAR) was named Hockey East’s Best Defensive Defenseman for the second consecutive year and earned a spot on the All-Hockey East First Team. He led all conference defensemen with 21 points (four goals, 17 assists) in 27 conference games. Overall, Dumoulin currently leads Boston College in defensemen scoring with 26 points (six goals, 20 assists) through 40 games. He was also recently named one of the ten finalists for the 2012 Hobey Baker Award as well.
Cornell RW Brian Ferlin (BOS) was named the ECAC’s Rookie of the Year and earned a spot on the ECAC All-Rookie Team as well. He follows it up after being named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year. Ferlin posted 17 points (seven goals, ten assists) in 19 conference games this season, which ranked tied for second among all freshmen in the conference. Overall, Ferlin has posted 21 points (eight goals, 13 assists in 26 games to date.
Boston College LW Johnny Gaudreau (CGY) was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team. He was also one of three players that were unanimous selections. Gaudreau finished second in the conference in freshmen in scoring with 22 points (12 goals, 10 assists) in 27 conference games. Overall, Gaudreau currently co-leads the nation in rookie scoring with 39 points (19 goals, 20 assists) through 40 games.
Michigan LW Alex Guptill (DAL) was named the CCHA’s Rookie of the Year. He led all conference freshmen with 25 points (13 goals, 12 assists) in 28 CCHA regular season games. Overall, Guptill currently co-leads the Wolverines with 33 points (16 goals, 17 assists) through 40 games.
Clarkson G Paul Karpowich (STL) was named to the All-ECAC Third Team. He was also named a finalist for the ECAC’s Ken Dryden Award as well. Karpowich posted a 9-9-4 record in 22 conference games this season, which ranked fourth in the conference. Overall, he finishes the season with a 16-15-6 mark that includes five shutouts. This season, Karpowich set a new single-season school record for most saves (1,092) and leaves Clarkson as the school’s all-time career saves leader with 3,735 in 130 career games.
Harvard C Alex Killorn (TB) was named to the All-ECAC First Team. He posted 24 points (ten goals, 14 assists) in 22 conference games this season, which ranked fifth in the conference. Overall, Killorn finishes the season leading Harvard in 46 points (23 goals, 23 assists) in 34 games.
Boston College C/W Chris Kreider (NYR) was named to the All-Hockey East Second Team. In 27 conference games, he finished tied for sixth in scoring with 28 points (14 goals, 14 assists). Kreider led Hockey East in both shorthanded goals (3) and points (4). Overall, he currently leads Boston College with 41 points (20 goals, 21 assists) through 40 games.
Colgate D Thomas Larkin (CBJ) was named to the All-ECAC Third Team. He posted nine points (two goals, seven assists) in 20 conference games this season. Overall, Larkin finishes the season with 14 points (four goals, ten assists) in 37 games.
Denver LW Zac Larraza’s (PHO) goal versus Minnesota-Duluth on Mar. 16 was the first of his collegiate career.
Harvard D Patrick McNally (VAN) and G Steve Michalek (MIN) were both named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team. McNally was also named to the All-ECAC Third Team as well. He led all ECAC rookie defensemen in scoring with 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) in 22 conference games. Overall, McNally finishes the season leading all Harvard freshmen with 28 points (six goals, 22 assists) in 34 games. Michalek finished third in the ECAC with a .533 winning percentage and posted a 5-4-6 record in 17 conference games. Overall, he finishes the season with a 7-7-8 record in 24 appearances.
Boston University D Garrett Noonan (NSH) was named to the All-Hockey East Second Team. He led all conference defensemen with 11 goals and finished tied for fifth with 18 points in 26 conference games. Overall, Noonan has posted 26 points (16 goals, 10 assists) through 37 games. His 16 goals currently co-lead the nation among defensemen, while his eight power play goals currently co-lead Boston University.
Quinnipiac C/W Matthew Peca (TB) was named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team. He led the ECAC in rookie scoring with 20 points (four goals, 16 assists) in 22 conference games this season. Overall, Peca finishes the season ranked second on the Bobcats squad with 39 points (eight goals, 31 assists) in 39 games. His 39 points also currently co-lead the nation among all rookies as well.
Denver D Paul Phillips (CHI) missed the WCHA Broadmoor Cup Championship semi-final game versus Minnesota-Duluth on Mar. 16 and the championship game versus North Dakota on Mar. 17 due to a leg injury that he suffered on Mar. 15 versus Michigan Tech. His current status in unknown.
Wisconsin D Justin Schultz (ANA) was named a Top Ten finalist for this year’s Hobey Baker Award. This is the second consecutive year that Schultz has been named a Top Ten finalist and he becomes the first Badger ever to accomplish the feat. Despite Wisconsin’s season ending two weeks ago, Schultz continues to lead the nation in defensemen scoring with 44 points (16 goals, 28 assists) in 37 games.
Princeton D Michael Sdao (OTT) was named to the All-ECAC Second Team. He posted 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in 20 ECAC games this season, which ranked tied for fifth in the conference. Overall, Sdao finishes the season leading all Princeton defensemen with 20 points (ten goals, ten assists) in 30 games.
Colgate RW Austin Smith (DAL) was named the ECAC Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-ECAC First Team. He led the ECAC in a number of categories including points (34) and goals (25) in 22 conference games this season. Smith finishes the season currently leading the nation with 36 goals and leading all NHL-drafted prospects with 57 points in 39 games. Most recently, he was also named a Top Ten finalist for the 2012 Hobey Baker Award.
Miami LW Reilly Smith (DAL) was named a Top Ten Finalist for this year’s Hobey Baker Award. He led the CCHA with 18 goals in 28 conference games during the regular season and was one of only two players to be unanimously selected to the All-CCHA First Team. Overall, Smith leads the RedHawks with 48 points (30 goals, 18 assists) through 38 games. His eight game-winning goals currently lead the nation, while his 30 goals rank second.
Colgate C Chris Wagner (ANA) was named to the All-ECAC Second Team. He led the ECAC with 22 assists and finished just behind linemate Austin Smith in the ECAC scoring race with 32 points in 22 conference games. Wagner finishes the season leading Colgate with 34 assists and ranked second on the team with 51 points in 38 games. His 34 assists also currently lead all NHL-drafted prospects as well.
UMass-Lowell C/LW Scott Wilson (PIT) was named Hockey East’s Rookie of the Year. He led all conference freshmen in scoring with 28 points (12 goals, 16 assists) in 26 conference games. Overall, Wilson currently co-leads the River Hawks with 37 points (16 goals, 21 assists) through 35 games. Wilson was also one of three players that were unanimous selections to the conference’s All-Rookie Team.
