Sunday Papers, February 24th Jets and NHL news

Note: Make sure to @ tweet @illegalcurve with your guess in this afternoon’s contest. You can win IC Gear by participating in our twitter Game Winning Goal contest. Remember that for your vote to qualify you must send in your guess by hashtaging (#) the Game Winning Goal (GWG) contest. (i.e. #ICGWG Hainsey).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Two minutes for being so very stupid. When you have the 30th ranked penalty kill in the NHL (by a country mile – Jets are killing at 67.9% and the 29th ranked Ducks are 74.1%) you simply cannot afford to take penalties. It is really as simple as that. Sure some are inadvertent but there are some (i.e. Kane’s extra minor vs. Hartnell, Slater’s faceoff violation and Jokinen taking a too many men) that you cannot simply afford to take if you plan on winning the game.

Winnipeg Sun: Olli Jokinen makes serious improvement. He is showing improvement and the Jets will need him to be even better if they want to compete against the better teams in the East. They cannot afford another round of inconsistent play.
Jokinen faceoff

Winnipeg Sun: Nothing special about Winnipeg Jets special teams. While folks were trumpeting about the vast improvement in the penalty kill as the Jets went six for six against the Sabres and Hurricanes power play, are ranked low 30th and 20th respectively. Whereas the Flyers have the ninth ranked power play and they used that to their benefit on Saturday going three for six. Ted also looks at the Jets quick starts, play of James Wright and Postma’s soft play.

Illegal Curve: Proposed Realignment puts Winnipeg Jets in Conference 3. The big talk on Saturday was the new alignment of the NHL proposed for next season. What do you think about the look of the Jets proposed conference?

Jets affiliate and prospect news:

IceCaps official site: IceCaps at Marlies preview. St. John’s has been off since a 5-1 victory on Wednesday. Hopefully the time off has gotten them ready for their tilt with Toronto.

Barrie Colts: Mark Scheifele takes a boarding penalty and gets a game misconduct. On Friday, the Colts dropped their fourth straight game (update: they won last night sans Scheifele) and Jets prospect Mark Scheifele was kicked out in the 2nd period after he was assessed a game misconduct.

Columbus Dispatch: Michigan takes out Miami Ohio and Jacob Trouba was stellar. The Jets have to feel a lot of joy when they watch the defensive play of Jacob Trouba. I caught part of the game and from what I saw he played very well.

Jets opposition (New Jersey Devils) news:

Star-Ledger: Missed penalty shot by Steve Bernier a turning point? Good news Jets fans. The Devils also lost on Saturday in Washington.

Star-Ledger: In the Devils’ system – Do the players actually matter? This has been the knock on the Devils for years, yet they win championships, so you would suspect that many wish they too had as successful a system.

NHL news:

CBC: Max Pacioretty takes out Ryan McDonagh. When coach John Tortorella starts off a post-game press conference with a question for the gathered media you know you are in for a treat. The Rangers bench boss was less than pleased with the hit that took out his player. What do you think?

Globe and Mail: Battle of Ontario finally has some bite. Watching the game with a couple of the guys and it was noted how into the game the crowd was yesterday. It had a playoff atmosphere.

San Jose Mercury News: Sharks’ Ryane Clowe could be facing 10-game suspension by NHL. The Sharks are going to present this as if Clowe was part of a line change. Will be interesting to see how the league views it.

Buffalo News: Sabres have pathetic repeat. Certainly not all sunshine and lollipops in Northern New York state as the Sabres misery continues. Last night they listened to more booing from their fan base as they dropped a game to in-state rival and fellow cellar dweller New York Islanders.

Monday Papers

Monday Papers, February 18th Jets, affiliate and prospect news

Note: Stay tuned to @illegalcurve on twitter as we will be covering the Jets final home practice this morning at the MTS Centre before the team heads off on their 10 day road trip.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: On the outside looking in. The Jets have a steep hill to climb if they want to get back into the race and it won’t be easy as they leave the formerly friendly confines of the MTS Centre for a road trip that will see them play nine of the next 11 games away from home.

Winnipeg Free Press: Leading the league in missed shots. Watching the game from above you cannot help but notice the many shots the Jets take that are shot wide of the net. The Jets are currently leading the NHL in missed shots, not exactly a stat coach Noel and company will be very pleased with.

Winnipeg Sun: Sniper Kane finally hits the target. Alexander Burmistrov continues to work well with Evander. Kane showed good effort to get the shot off while falling and gave the Jets an all too brief lead.
Kane-scores-300x200.jpg

Winnipeg Sun: Snapshots – Hainsey’s bad luck streak continues. He still has yet to score on the opposition in the two seasons he has played for the Jets although he has had 3 pucks go into the Jets net off his body. Kirk also covers the Jets missing the net, an Enstrom update, Stuart’s 400th game and WHL on the horizon.

Winnipeg Sun: It’s make-0r-break time for Winnipeg. In a shortened season a four game losing streak is even more magnified and while the Jets were loath to say it is make it or break it time, they are well aware of how important it is to immediately turn things around as they get ready to start on the road trip in Buffalo.

CBC: Frightening trip into the basement. Just as the MTS Centre has perhaps lost some of its magic for the home squad, perhaps it is time to debunk the notion that this team cannot win on the road.

Winnipeg Free Press: Talks between True North and WHL team break off. It is a natural fit for the city and you would have to imagine that teams that come to play Brandon would like to be able to justify the trip by playing a 2nd WHL team in Manitoba.
Current-WHL-teams.jpg

Jets on a Deadline Bruins 3 Jets 2:

Winnipeg Jets: Evander Kane, Zach Bogosian, Ondrej Pavelec and Alexander Burmistrov.

Boston Bruins: Coach Claude Julien, Brad Marchand, Tyler Seguin, Zdeno Chara, Daniel Paille and Jay Pandolfo.

Illegal Curve Post-game podcast from the Press box: Host Drew Mindell and Analyst Richard Pollock break down the Jets play against the Bruins.

Illegal Curve -Jets on a Deadline Bruins 3 Jets 2. Game recaps, post-game audio, video highlights and the NHL.com 3 Stars of the night.

Jets affiliate and prospect news:

The Telegram: IceCaps flattened by Pirates. St. John’s was hoping to start a winning streak after a Friday night victory over Manchester which ended a five game losing streak. Instead a 6-1 loss to Portland adds another loss to their total and keeps them in the Eastern Conference basement.

- The Barrie Colts dropped a 5-3 decision last night but Mark Scheifele continues his hot hand as he scored another goal, although he was a - 2 on the evening.

- Adam Lowry leads the Broncos in goals, assists and points and his Swift Current team faces off against Kootenay this afternoon.

Tuesday ' Game Day' Papers

Tuesday ' Game Day' Papers, February 19th Jets, affiliate and prospect news

Note: Make sure to @ tweet @illegalcurve with your guess in this evening’s contest. You can win IC Gear by participating in our twitter Game Winning Goal contest. Remember that for your vote to qualify you must send in your guess by hashtaging (#) the Game Winning Goal (GWG) contest. (i.e. #ICGWG Byfuglien).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Wheeler trying to boost Jets’ morale. It was curious hearing the normally upbeat Blake Wheeler speaking of negativity. It was never really clear whether he was directing it towards fans or the media, although it seemed more likely directed at the latter and not the former. Truth is if the team can turn things around they will be treated like royalty but when they lose it is important to point out their failings. Wheeler does acknowledges this reality later in his interview.
Blake-Wheeler-v2-300x185.jpg

Winnipeg Free Press: The iceberg is in sight. With so many games to play it is hard to believe that this team is ready to mail it in and get ready for the off season. While the team lost to both Pittsburgh and Boston, the effort was there and the fans appreciated that.

Winnipeg Free Press: PP and PK are both MIA. Coach Noel took these failures on himself and said he needs to ultimately get them back on track. The Jets have looked anemic when they are on the PP and their PK is not much better. Getting a healthy Zach Bogosian should help but ultimately Ondrej Pavelec needs to be their number one penalty killer.

CBC: DJ provides the game soundtrack. Often when in my car, I hear a song and think “Why does this sound familiar? Oh right the Jets play it during warm-up!â€. Always interesting to see what goes into the behind the scenes efforts to bring entertainment to the game.

Winnipeg Sun: Bringing extra baggage on eastern road trip. The focus yesterday at the MTS Centre seemed to be on negativity. From Blake Wheeler to coach Noel it was the topic of the day.

Winnipeg Sun: Ticket temptation bites Jets fan. This really seems to be a pretty standard tale but one people fall for all too often. Just remember that if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Globe and Mail: Slumping Jets hit the road in search of answers. For the season to be salvaged this team needs to figure out how to win on the road. The good news is they will start by playing a Sabres team that has won just once in their last four games. The bad news is they have to play five games in eight days including a dreaded back-to-back against the Flyers (23rd) and Devils (24th).

Illegal Curve: Coach Claude Noel. Negativity surrounding the team. Seeing frustration from his team? Mood swing in the 2nd intermission? Facing the Sabres. Power play problems. Play of Anthony Peluso.

Illegal Curve: Player audio from practice. Blake Wheeler, Zach Bogosian and Ondrej Pavelec.

Jets affiliate and prospect news:

Swift Current Broncos official site: Broncos drop 5-2 decision to Ice. Adam Lowry continues to tear things up in the WHL as he finished the afternoon scoring both goals (his 38th & 39th) for his team in a losing effort.

Jets opposition (Buffalo Sabres) news:

Olean Times Herald: Despite Sheen’s criticism, Erhoff enjoying strong season. When you read the title of the article you think it is someone other than Charlie Sheen, but it is in fact America’s bad boy actor who apparently is a fan of the Sabres (he works with Ryan Miller’s actress wife). Despite the criticism from the Anger Management star, Hoppe makes the case why Erhoff has been the Sabres best D man.

SI.com: Next five games could tell Sabres’ story. Is this article about the Sabres or Jets? Could apply to both squads who are currently residing in the Eastern Conference basement (Buffalo is 12th having played 16 games and the Jets are 14 with 14 games played).

NHL news:

TSN: Draft Lottery odds will remain the same for coming year. Good news for bottom basement teams hoping to improve courtesy of the deep 2013 draft.

Globe and Mail: Bruins bring a little cheer to families of Sandy Hook Elementary. The Boston organization and players should be commended for taking the time to try and bring some joy to a community that was hit by a devastating tragedy this year.

Wednesday Papers

Wednesday Papers, February 20th Jets and NHL news

Note: Tune into NHL Mid-Week with Illegal Curve Hockey tonight on TSN Radio 1290 from 6 pm to 7 pm. Guest: Frank Provenzano (Dallas Stars Assistant GM).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Pavelec key to complete games for the Jets. He brought the Pavelectricity last night and as I said on Jets on a Deadline, I am not sure how he was not voted a star of the game. He was terrific and perhaps made his biggest save of the game following the Jets early goal, when the team gave up a good chance almost immediately and Ondrej made the stop.
Ondrej-Pavelec-v2-300x186.jpg

Winnipeg Free Press: ‘Joy back into your life’. One game does not make a season, but the Jets deserve to celebrate after playing a pretty mistake free game. There are still improvements to be made and it should be pointed out that they beat a Buffalo team that is fading quickly, but it was a solid start to the road trip. Next up are the Southeast leading Hurricanes.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets-Sabres game stars. I am 100% with Ed on these selections. How Pavelec and Wheeler both missed out on being game stars is beyond me. While the 3 Star selection is fairly meaningless, in this case both of these two deserved the recognition for their effort.

TSN: Doing the tough stuff to earn road win in Buffalo. It was a terrific 60 minute road effort by the Jets. Starting with Pavelec and right through to the forwards and defence, the team collectively played very well.

Winnipeg Sun: Dustin Byfuglien goes up front on power play. For all the fans who have been calling for Big Buff to move up front you finally got your wish.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets go on the road to find cure for struggles. Blake Wheeler was a different player last night. He was literally everywhere on the ice and while he didn’t end up with any points (or in the 3 stars) he had six shots and finished plus one. Friesen also discusses Kane’s hustle, Slater’s moves, Ladd’s hot, Jokinen cold, Postma’s errors and the play of Clitsome.

Illegal Curve: Jets on a Deadline – Jets 2 Sabres 1. Game recaps, video highlights and the NHL.com 3 Stars of the night.
Jets-@-Sabres-300x186.jpg

NHL news:

Chicago Sun-Times: Blackhawks match all-time NHL record. While they could not be happy giving up a 3-1 lead late in the 3rd to the Canucks, it must have been especially sweet for Chicago to score this record tying victory against Vancouver.

Calgary Sun: Giordano fined $10,000 for slew-foot. A big fine for the Flames defenceman and in case you missed it, here is the video of the move which cost him 10K.

Thursday Papers

Thursday Papers, February 21st Jets and NHL news

Note: Make sure to @ tweet @illegalcurve with your guess in this evening’s contest. You can win IC Gear by participating in our twitter Game Winning Goal contest. Remember that for your vote to qualify you must send in your guess by hashtaging (#) the Game Winning Goal (GWG) contest. (i.e. #ICGWG Ladd).

Jets news:

Illegal Curve: Zach Redmond cut on the ice at practice. We have updated the post to include coach Noel's scrum which not surprisingly, is focused on the injury to the young defenceman.

Winnipeg Free Press: Wheeler finds his grove. Considering the tenor of the conversation that was had with him just before the team departed for this road trip it is shocking to see the 180 that his game has taken. Of course same is limited to one game and we will see tonight if he is able to keep playing at that high level.

Winnipeg Sun: Blake Wheeler finally on a roll again. Getting no points in a game is not always a fair indication of an impact on the game. Wheeler used his speed to the benefit of his team mates and was the most dangerous player on the ice against the Sabres. He said moving forward he will continue to play like this and if he is able to maintain this momentum, the Jets will be a much better team.

Winnipeg Sun: Captain Andrew Ladd set to play 500th NHL game in city where career started. He has been a solid leader for the Jets for the past season and a bit and Ken Wiebe breaks down the captain’s career. He is currently tied with the injured Tobias Enstrom for most points on the team and leads Winnipeg in goals with eight.
Andrew-Ladd-300x172.jpg

Winnipeg Sun: Evander Kane laments missing open net. It was one of those misses that made you think at the time “oh boy, that is going to burn the Jets†but when the final buzzer finally sounded, allowed for the team to make light of the miss.

CBC: Jets’ Music Man. DJ Lee Godfrey explains what goes into the Jets’ game soundtrack. It is quite funny being in my car hearing a song on the radio and thinking why is this so familiar and then realizing they play it during warm-up.

Jets affiliate and prospect news:

TSN: O’Dell scores hat trick to lead IceCaps past Whale. The IceCaps continued their inconsistent play as they have lost, won, lost and now won again in their last four games. They face a tough Toronto Marlies on Sunday. Caps are six points out of a playoff spot.

Jets opposition (Carolina Hurricanes) news:

News and Observer: Jeff Skinner out indefinitely with concussion. An unfortunate injury for the Canes although the Jets won’t be crying about not having to face the talented Skinner.

NHL Mid-Week with Illegal Curve Replay:
IC-in-studio-Dec-15-610x290-300x142.jpg

Replay: Buffalo Sabres fire Lindy Ruff, Interview with Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald. Six things we learned this Week. Interview with Frank Provenzano, Assistant GM of the Dallas Stars. Break it Down, Keep Your Eye On.

NHL news:

The Province: Hansen gets one-game suspension for forearm to Hossa’s head. You wonder if Hansen got the game because of Hossa’s past injury issues.

Orange County Register: Ducks don’t waste time, make Fasth deal. The puns on twitter yesterday regarding the Ducks 8-0 goalie came fasth and furious (oh ya, that’s right, I went there). Anaheim rewarded him with a two year deal.

Buffalo News: Firing brings Ruff era to startling end. Bet the Jets are wondering if it was something they did. On the heels of his team losing 2-1 to Winnipeg, the formerly longest tenured coach in the NHL was let go by Buffalo. It was somewhat surprising considering he ran a full 90 minute practice and then met with the media before he was informed that he was being let go.

CBC: Ron Rolston brings technically sound plan to Buffalo. In case you were wondering who would be replacing Lindy Ruff as coach of the Sabres, Elliotte Friedman introduces you to the older brother of former NHLer Brian Rolston.

Philadelphia Inquirer: Voracek scores hat trick as Flyers edge Penguins. The Pens took a quick 2-0 lead and the game looked over before it had really even started. However Philadelphia led by Voracek and Simmonds stormed back to win a crucial game for the Flyers.

Friday Papers

Friday Papers, February 22nd Jets and NHL news

Note: Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN Radio 1290 as the guys discuss all the latest Winnipeg Jets and NHL news from 6 am to 9 am on Saturday (That is not a typo. With the Flyers game starting at noon, the guys are getting up early to provide you with all the latest news). Guest: Anthony SanFilippo (PhiladelphiaFlyers.com)

Jets news:

- Jets have recalled defenceman Julian Melchiori from the St. John’s IceCaps of the American Hockey League.

Winnipeg Free Press: Every game, a very good Ladd shows why he’s captain. Not sure I see Ladd as a lighting rod on this team but he has definitely blossomed in his role of leader of this team. In his 500th NHL game he had a night to remember and helped his squad to an important victory.
Andrew-Ladd-2-610x290-wm-300x142.jpg

Winnipeg Free Press: Ugly, scary day ends with nice win on ice. While it seems too early to be calling ‘must wins’ last night sure seemed of that variety. They took a clean two points from a division rival and more importantly did not wilt after quickly giving up a tying goal once they took the lead. Coach Noel still has room for improvement.

Winnipeg Free Press: They won one for Zach. An injured team mate can be a powerful motivator and while the horrendous injury to young defenceman Zach Redmond clearly impacted the team, they showed good resolve in knocking off the Hurricanes.

TSN: Jets end difficult day with win over Hurricanes. There are still a number of problem areas that coach Noel is going to need to fix but for the second straight game Winnipeg had a strong penalty kill (3/3) and Ondrej Pavelec kept his team in the game.

Winnipeg Sun: Snapshots – winning ugly but who cares. At the end of the day a win is a win and as long as you have 2 points in your pocket, not many remember if the win was pretty or not. Paul also touches on Redmond’s injury, masked adventures, captain Ladd’s storybook evening, shaky start, Blunt Blake Wheeler and 5 on 3 blues.
Blake-Wheeler-2-wm-300x139.jpg

Winnipeg Sun: Redmond resting after surgery on femoral artery. It was a scary incident which deeply affected the team. Following the victory coach Noel spoke how it was clear to him that his team was still feeling the effect of seeing their team mate injured.

CBC: Captain Ladd leading the way. While he is being asked to play above his natural fit, until this team improves via the draft or trade, he is going to have to play those types of minutes/situations.

Illegal Curve: Jets on a Deadline – Jets 4 Hurricanes 3. Game recaps, video highlights and the NHL.com 3 Stars of the night.

Yahoo Canada: Why the WHL would work in Winnipeg. Looks like the WHL has a couple of struggling clubs that could call the MTS Centre home. Would be fun to have a friendly rivalry with Brandon.

NHL news:

Columbus Dispatch: Anisimov is stable, alert and moving. Two extremely distressing on-ice injuries yesterday. While the Jets Redmond’s didn’t happen in front of the cameras, Anisimov’s happened during the Red Wings and Blue Jackets game. It looked extremely scary at the time and it is good to hear that he is doing better. For those that missed the play where Anisimov was injured here is a link.

Edmonton Journal: Twitterverse reacts to Taylor Hall’s hit on Clutterbuck. Taylor Hall should expect to be hit by the Shanaban as most of the hockey world felt it was a dirty, knee on knee hit.

Ottawa Citizen: Senators lose star goalie Anderson. As if losing Karlsson and Spezza wasn’t enough, it looks like they might be without the services of number one goalie Craig Anderson for awhile.

Globe and Mail: Brian Burke takes scouting job with Anaheim. Going back to where he had his greatest success, Burke and the Leafs have terminated their relationship as he moves on…or back to the Ducks.

Saturday Papers

Saturday Papers, February 23rd Jets and NHL news

Note: Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN Radio 1290 as the guys discuss all the latest Winnipeg Jets and NHL news from 6 am to 9 am today. Guest: Anthony SanFilippo (PhiladelphiaFlyers.com)

Note II: Make sure to @ tweet @illegalcurve with your guess in this afternoon’s contest. You can win IC Gear by participating in our twitter Game Winning Goal contest. Remember that for your vote to qualify you must send in your guess by hashtaging (#) the Game Winning Goal (GWG) contest. (i.e. #ICGWG Thorburn).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: D-man Melchiori makes frantic trip. Similar to the call that back-up netminder Eddie Pasquale received when Al Montoya went down, the young defeceman got a late night call from his coach and is ready for the chance to show his stuff at the NHL level.

Winnipeg Free Press: Show must go on in Philly. Could this be the biggest test of the year for the Jets?

Winnipeg Free Press: Miracle on ice. Showing their is no 'I' in team, a collective Jets group from the players to the training staff worked together to save a fellow teammate's life.

Winnipeg Sun: Showing more than enough heart. Every time the talk turns positive after the team rips off a win or two the wheels seem to come off the wagon. Perhaps it is best to not get too high or too low. Historically the Jets/Thrashers franchise has done very well in the city of brotherly love having not lost since January 21st, 2009. That night Mike Knuble, who is freshly returned to the present day Flyers, scored two goals and Chris Thorburn scored for Atlanta. Maybe he will pop the #ICGWG today.
Chris-Thorburn-wwm-300x200.jpg

Winnipeg Sun: Penalty killing shows marked improvement. While the Jets have improved on the road killing six of six penalties, they did so against weaker power plays as Buffalo is ranked 29th and Carolina is 20th. The Flyers are ranked 11th so the key will be not taking any penalties against a good power play unit.

Winnipeg Sun: People on ice saved Zach Redmond’s life. The quick thinking of Anthony Peluso, assistant coach Perry Pearn and the Jets training staff likelyf saved Redmond’s life.

Winnipeg Sun: Redmond likely done for the season. His season might be done, which is unfortunate given that the young defenceman was attempting to take his game to the next level, but the truth is that hockey is a game and the more important thing is he has his life.

Jets opposition (Philadelphia Flyers) news:

Flyers official site: Sesito injured on conditioning assignment. Another injury for Philly. Anthony will be joining the guys to talk about all things Flyers today.

Daily News: Flyers just not very good. If Jets players are worried about negativity in the media they should hang out in Philadelphia for awhile.

Daily News: Matt Read lost 6 weeks with rib injury. While you never like to see a player injured Jets fans won’t cry not seeing Matt Read in the lineup. He was very good against Winnipeg last season.

NHL news:

Chicago Tribune: Hawks make NHL history. What more can be said about this Chicago team? Regardless of how you expected them to do this season, you cannot believe anyone thought in their wildest dreams that they could achieve this level of success.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Malkin hurt as Penguins beat Panthers. Winning during a shortened season is important but at what cost did last night’s two points cost Pittsburgh? Sounds like Malkin suffered whiplash.

Ottawa Citizen: Karlsson calls out Cooke, but stresses the positives. Good on the young defenceman for trying to maintain positivity which cannot be easy knowing your season is already over.

Edmonton Journal: Hall’s hit sends a message – Stop messing with us. This sentiment seems to be exclusively one possessed by those with an Edmonton postal code.

Newsday: Islanders place goalie Rick DiPietro on waivers. Looks like the DiPietro experiment has finally come to its inevitable conclusion on Long Island.
