In all probability this will be the make or break day for the NHL season. Put any news updates here for easy access, but please keep the discussion in other threads.

To summarize yesterday's (Feb. 15) activities:
- NHL offers 40M cap without linkage.
- NHLPA counters with 52M cap.
- NHL makes "final" offer of 42.5M.
- NHLPA counters with a 49M offer.
- NHL rejects 49M offer.
- Goodenow responds to the NHL's rejection by saying that the NHL will receive nothing further from the NHLPA.

8:15am ET update: No movement by either side overnight. The press conference to cancel the season is still scheduled for today at 1 pm ET.

9:30am ET update: The Fan590 reports that the NHLPA has called a 4pm ET press conference. The speculation is that it may be just posturing.

10:30am ET update: Sportsnet has learned the league will come off their hard stance of $42.5 million but will not accept the union's latest offer of $49 million.

10:55am ET update: Bob McKenzie denies the sportsnet report that the NHL has come off their hard stance of 42.5M.

11:00am ET update: TSN reports that the NHL has not made contact with the NHLPA and that Bettman has informed all the teams that the season will be cancelled at 1pm ET.

1:00pm ET update: Gary Bettman cancels season. A sad day for hockey and the fans of this sport.

Any explanation on why they would do such a thing?

To put more pressure on Bettman to show they are ready to blow this season up as well. Even though I still think both sides will have an agreement within the next 90 minutes ........

90.................89.................88....................87...................86................85...........84.........83............82 minutes left till 11am

good news boys and girls

E. J. Hradek was reporting that there was some flexibility on the owners part. He thought a cap of $45-46 would strike a deal.

No evidence that any progress has been made since NHL rejected $49 million cap.

Deadline passes...

www.tsn.ca
And that article starts:
"The National Hockey League's deadline for the NHL Players' Association to accept its $42.5 million hard cap proposal has passed, with all signs pointing to commissioner Gary Bettman announcing the cancellation of the 2004-2005 season at a 1pm et/10am pt news conference in New York (live on TSN and TSN.ca).
The league has already sent out memos to its teams saying that it has not contacted the union since Tuesday night, and the season will be cancelled. Neither side has made contact with each other since wrapping up a public letter-writing campaign with the NHL and the union standing pat with a $6.5 million gap."
