Moving from Alberta to the Island and was curious if anyone knows the best way to be able to watch the games while I’m out there? Am I going to have to suck it up and pay for centre ice or does sportsnet now work for streaming? I don’t care if I have to pay for it, I just want good quality lol

I’m on the island as well. You’ll be able to catch around 20-25% of Oilers games via Sportsnet or CBC, but the vast majority are blacked out. Your only (legal) option is Center Ice, unfortunately...

Ahh that’s what I figured. I was worried about the blackouts, have rarely missed a game for the last 15 years and wasn’t about to start so I will have to look into Center Ice. Thanks!

I’ve used gamecenter/nhl tv for the last like 5+ years since we cut cable, and it used to get us all the games, but last year, despite claiming BC got all 82 Oiler games, almost half were blacked out. Sportsnet now claims to air all 82 as well, so I’m going to see how that goes this year

Reminder to everyone: Please don’t post mentioning anything illegal. It just means someone has to delete it

Beware that even with CI you will still have approx 10-15% of games blacked out.

It is totally not worth it.

It's been more than a decade since I've had Center Ice, but I used to really enjoy it. Especially during those few years when the Oilers had non televised matches available for pay per view. We saw Radek Dvorak nekkid one time.

I have center ice. Not too many games are blacked out. I share it with two buddies.

I've been using Centre Ice in BC for last 5 years and I don't have many (if any that I can remember) games blacked out. It's the best way to watch Oiler games out of Alberta.

I was in Penticton over the winter months and did the same thing. No issues at all with Centre Ice.
I dont understand how someone can claim there are blackouts for a product that provides every game when you purchase it.
    Doesn't make sense to me.

Your Ci games will be blacked out if they are televised national games on a Saturday or so.

I dont recall ever having an issue.
Is there a disclaimer that suggests there will be blacked out games? I mean...how can they charge for a product and then black out some games?

I got CI first back in 2006. I still have it.

As far as I know, If I am in Edmonton and the game is a national Saturday broadcast, i can't get it.

I have to tune in on my tv or I stream it on SNET's site, etc.

Thats BS...that is a legit complaint and people need to start voicing things like that. I have no idea how they can justify that.

They are blacked out on CI if they are on any other channels. That means not only do you need CI, but you also need all the other sports channels, (sportsnet one, 360, etc).

I paid $240 to watch Oilers games on tv but that was not enough. Apparently I had to pay more.

Add to that people in Europe or certain states only have to pay $100 for the same service and well, they can shove CI.

I get ~15-20 games on the sports package channels now. The rest I find other ways or don’t bother with.

I will never ever pay for CI again.

I dont blame you at all.
I must have been lucky the winter I did have it. I couldn't watch every game due to other commitments but the games I did try to watch were always available.

Information like this is very helpful moving forward.
    Thanks.

Living in Europe and I pay like 200 Canadian dollars for NHL.tv and nothing (as of yet) is blacked out. Basically no one cares about the NHL over here (in my country at least, in Sweden, Finland etc. it is probably another story) so there are no games on the tv.

But even if there were games on tv, why should I watch it on tv if I already paid for NHL.tv?

It’s all about rights holders and advertising dollars over here. Stations pay for exclusive rights to regional and/or national games. So that means no competition, no other choice for the consumer.

They basically put the customer’s needs last, after the owners, league, players and broadcasters. Not a good business model. But they all have their heads too far up each other’s asses to entertain a paradigm shift.

Sucks to hear that CI is basically useless, but confirms my suspicions. I was planning on cutting cable since I don't really use it for anything else but I guess I won't be.

Never had that issue, I've watched games on CI that they are showing on Sportsnet only difference is I don't get the commercials. I've watched games on CI this year that they were showing on Sportsnet, like the one tonight.

The game tonight is on Sportsnet west. They won’t black that out on CI if you are in BC.

But if it were on 360 or sportsnet one or sportsnet pacific it would be blacked out on CI if you are in BC.

I live on Vancouver Island and use GameCentre. The only games that are blacked out throughout the entire NHL are regional Canucks games. So if the Oil are playing the Canucks and the game is a regional broadcast it’ll be blacked out. Otherwise I’ve had no issues.

Yeah that's true but if you want to watch Oiler games in BC, CI is most definitely the way to go. You'll catch 95% of the games no problem.

Its brutal that center ice can be blocked out at all when you are paying that much for it

I had CI for years and never had any problems, but I also subscribed to all the extra sports channels so nothing was ever blacked out. I no longer have cable so I watch all my hockey on GameCentre and as I mentioned, the only Oiler games I don’t get are regional games vs Vancouver. So maybe 1 or 2 a year.

Some of the features I like about GC is that you can watch either team’s TV broadcast, past games are always available to watch (going back to the 16-17 season I believe), and there is some NHL Network content available. Also the picture is very crisp and smooth.

Well, no, it isn’t, not in my experience.
