Sounds interesting. Any thoughts on a lot of reader reviews that say "good but plodding"?

Those are probably fair reviews. It falls somewhere in the middle of the spectrum between pop-history and academic history.

If you're really interested in knowing how the league was formed and understanding the detailed reality of how the Original Six (and friends) operated in the early days, it's worth skimming through some detail to find the juicy bits. If you're looking for a light read and some colorful anecdotes, there are other books out there to fill that niche.

Oh good. I'll pick it up, b/c that's what I'm interested in. Anecdotes and stories are great, but if I want that I'll get something like "100 Great Hockey Stories" or something like that.

I'm about halfway through The Silmarillion, like I said in the gdt. Took a break to read Something Wicked This Way Comes by Bradbury. I'm debating reading something else but we'll see.

And since it was mentioned earlier, I read the Kingkiller Chronicles recently. Powered through the second half of the first and the entire second one while I spent a day and a half without power because of Hurricane Matthew. I liked them, but I felt like the second one dragged on a bit, especially the part in fairyland with the magical sex goddess.

Just finished Infinite Jest. Took me about a full year to finish, though I went through dry spells of not reading for about a month or so. Very entertaining read, though the end did not really wrap up anything sadly.
