Makes so much sense, already was a captain, always says the right things, never causes trouble and is a great hockey player. Add to the fact he dreamed of playing for the team, that a homegrown talent is helping the leafs turn a chapter and make them a great brand again.

He was really the only choice at the beginning of last year, that this carried on this long is just gross mismanagement from Dubas and Co.

He defected from a team where he was beloved and where he was captain, to go to his hometown team.
It was obviously going to be him. Who else?

It absolutely was. Is there for the next 6 years, and he captained an Isles team at a very young age. He's the perfect candidate.

I think if you name a young guy that isn't Matthews - you create drama. It shouldn't be this way, but it is. You give it to Marner and "omg! Leafs admit Matthews isn't as good!". You give it to Rielly - same idea.

With Tavares - he's older, he's been captain before. It was a safe choice. I also think he was a good captain in NY, so it seems like a strong choice.

The only other option was Matthews.

Absolutely. Matthews or Marner aren't nearly mature enough to handle it, nor do they really play the kind of hockey you want your captain playing. Rielly would be a terrible pick, far too lackluster defensively. Tavares, despite all his faults, and he has many of them, has worn the C before, and bleeds for the team. Attitude reflects leadership, and maybe this is the attitude that the Leafs desperately need.
