The New York Rangers drafted McIlrath as the 10th pick in the 1st round in 2010 but at that point fighting in the league wasn't declining the way it is today. He doesn't appear to be capable of making an NHL team as more than a 6th or 7th Defenseman so in hindsight it appears that the Rangers selected him way too high in that draft. He would be lucky to have the career of Adam McQuaid. On the other hand, if he totally busts he could be a lifetime AHL'er.

He was a reach on draft day. It's not his fault the Rangers drafted him 30 spots higher than he should have gone.

If I recall correctly the argument on here from a few people a few months ago was that McIlrath was a bigger need and the Rangers didn't need Fowler.

Either way, he was drafted waaaaay too high. But this Anaheim fan is quite happy with Fowler

Everyone knew on draft day he was drafted almost two rounds too high.

Nothing has changed.

Did you see the 2010 rangers draft GDT? Sheer hilarity. I read it from time to time for the laughs. Any rangers fan defending the pick today is just trying to make justifications for something you can't justify.

Sanguinetti, Jessiman, McIlrath... Sometimes the picks just don't work out the way you thought. However, McIlrath was a reach at the time already. There was a lot of criticism regarding this pick. He won't make the Rangers team permanently and will spend most of his career in the AHL or might move to Europe.

People were saying this was a terrible pick before he had even stood up out of his seat.

Which is kind of crappy for him. He could still very well be a solid NHL player. He's just always going to be seen as the guy who was picked before Fowler and Tarasenko.

He is one of those guys who you draft for size and toughness and hope he develops everything else. One of those Milan Lucic type picks, where it's a huge gamble with maybe a 5% success rate that it turns out. Kyle Beach is another.

He was undisciplined and lacked hockey IQ. Everyone knew it. It's always been in sports and always will be, the fact that teams will take a chance of these physical specimens that are reckless and tough and nothing more. One of the highlights of his draft year was that he fought another tough guy in the same draft class, Alex Petrovic in the top prospects game and some would say he manhandled Petrovic.
