I think Dubas should look for trading partners, see if they have a really good asset to offer (a #1 D). Then allow Nylander, and his camp, to negotiate with those teams.

Give Nylander the option to stay, or go elsewhere for whatever better offer he gets.

So the Leafs should offer Willie the #1 Centres job, the McD contract and trade Matty for scraps

Personally I want to bridge 3x5. Good cap hit through the crunch, 3 years to see if this core can do it.

After that-
Kadri is only one year from UFA- tradeable to make room for a Nylander contract
The Matthews and Marner contracts will be recent enough that we could make a "team max" stick
If we can't work out a deal he'll be worth a lot in trade.

I get Dubas trying to leverage now for a long term deal, but an easy bridge is the batna here, not trading him.
