Was there a more famous hockey dad than Walter Gretzky?

Rest in peace.

RIP to a great Canadian ambassador and person. Walter used to do whatever he could for local charities and get Wayne to help in ways (for example just stuff to put up for charity auction and such). I know he did a ton for the school for the deaf in Brantford. Met him at a Leaf game when I was a kid, a class act.

Whoa, what a figure in Canadian hockey he was, not to mention his parenting...

Walter was a good hockey player back in the 50s. He played in my mom's hometown (Woodstock) when she was a little girl. Back down the highway to Brantford after he got married to Phyllis and worked for Bell Canada. (He continued working for Bell Canada throughout Wayne's career in Edmonton.)

His aneurysm in 1991 robbed most of his memories of Wayne's career (temporarily, at least) and he reverted to speaking Ukrainian for a while afterwards. He made a pretty good recovery, though, and was always a big part of his children's lives.

Solid man, great hockey guy, family guy. What a loss.
