Regarding Darling's buyout. The rules for buyout for players over 26 is that you pay 2/3rds of the remaining contract over twice the remaining time. Darling's average salary is $4.15M and he has 3 years left after this one. Thus, if we bought him out after the Stanley Cup this year, we'd be on the hook for $1.383M for six years, until 2023-2024.

Note that the Wisniewski buyout ends after this year, but the Semin buyout of $2.333M goes until 2020-2021. I personally think the most prudent move for the Canes is to hold onto Darling's contract for one more year. If he plays putrid again, we buy him out and only go for 4 years. If he plays better, we can trade him or he helps our team.

I think the risk/reward solution is to sign a 3rd goalie and hope that the competition helps propel them into better years. That said, to have a 3 goalie scenario we need to sign Cam AND sign another decent goalie, or we need to sign 2 decent goalies. If we go UFA, our best options are Carter Hutton, Antti Raanta, Anton Khudobin (lol), Antti Niemi, Jonathan Bernier, Kari Lehtonen, Ondrej Pavelec, Michael Hutchinson, or Jaro Halak. All of these goalies currently boast a SV% better than Ward's. The UFAs fall quickly off a cliff after Halak to players like Eddie Lack. I also haven't included a couple of goalies who have only played a few games, like Harri Sateri, Houdini's brother.

Here's how the Canes did the final 10 games of the last 4 seasons:

13/14: 4W, 3L, 3 OTL (90 point pace). They ended the season with 83 points
14/15: 4W, 5L, 1 OTL (73 point pace). They ended the season with 71 points
15/16: 3W, 4L, 3 OTL (73 point pace). They ended the season with 86 points
16/17: 4W, 4L, 2 OTL (82 point pace). They ended the season with 87 points

Other than turning 1 Loss into an OTL in 13/14 (which is the difference between a 90 point pace and an 82 point pace for those 10 games), the Canes final 10 games have been almost the same, or worse than their final record. I'm not sure where this notion of winning meaningless games which robs them of a better draft position is coming from since their record hasn't shown that the final 10 games of the last 4 seasons.

Re: the comment about being in the 30th spot up until early march in the McDavid year, that's not true. By March 1st, here were the standings:

Buffalo: 43 points
Edm: 46 points
AZ: 47 points
TOR: 55 points (in 63 games)
CAR: 55 points (in 61 games)

Canes were nowhere near the 30th spot by March 1st of that year and other than Buffalo and EDM swapping, the draft order remained the same from March 1 through the end of the season.

Facts are meaningless. Facts schmacts.

If you want to destroy two narratives at once, note that the Canes have traditionally been much better during the state fair road trip than during their final 10 games.

With TT and Aho both being 60+ players, I had to look at prior season point totals. Last time the 'Canes had two 60+ point players in same season? 2010-2011 - Skinner's rookie year.

Two more points, and Aho will have had the most points in a season since Staal had 70 in 11-12. (I'm ignoring the lockout-shortened season because I don't like math.)

One way to look at it is that Aho and TT have the highest PPG of any Cane since lockout-season Staal and Semin.

And other than prime seasons by Staal, you have to go back to the 2009 team to find other Canes who had better PPG.

Wait, Harri Sateri is back in the nhl?
