Maybe he won’t
Nothing is for certain obviously but I have no desire to watch Mitts put up 70-80 points on a cup winning Toronto team while Nylander frustrates the fans here with his soft skill game that disappears when the games get tough.

1 assist yada yada, but does anyone get the idea that Mitts (and Sobotka and Rodrigues and Girgensons) relentless effort away from the puck has been a key in the Sabres recent good games? He's still prone to the giveaway attempting the hero pass, but his hunt on the puck can't be questioned even when it leads to an own goal.

The Nylander brothers would defenitly compete harder if they played together. They play great together, but i dont think W Nylander wants to play in AHL...

W. Nylander is underrated , and will probably be all his career. Due to longlived rumors about character and severly missunderstood playing style.
Have no idea how good Casey will get, or are right now. So i did not vote.

If we really wanted Nylander, shouldn't we just make an offer sheet and give up the draft compensation, instead of trading away a player like Casey?

I think Nylander wants $8M+ on a long term deal.

And Toronto matches any short term bridge OS.

Besides, the Sabres don't own their 2019 2nd, so they can't make that OS offer.

For Mr. Mollasses? In a heart beat. Anyone ever give a logical educated guess what those 4 first round picks would have turned out to be? What draft number and what players?

If you go just by the next four Edmonton firsts, it's Jordan Eberle, Magnus Paarjarvi, Taylor Hall, and either RNH or Oscar Klefbom.

It's all conjecture because you don't know if the Oilers improve with Vanek.

The OS was in 2007 (after the 2007 Draft). So, the picks would have been 2008-2011.

If Vanek doesn't move the needle, those picks were:

2008 - 13th overall [Went to LA in trade] (Teubert) <BPA: Erik Karlsson @ 15>
2009 - 10th overall (MPS) <BPA: Ryan O'Reilly @ 33>
2010 - 1st overall (Hall) <BPA: Hall or Seguin...>
2011 - 1st overall (RNH) <BPA: Kucherov or Landeskog or Gaudreau or Scheifele...>

Is that a better core than we have now?

There are too many variables to really comment.

You don't know where the Oilers or Sabres picks end up because Vanek leaves Buffalo and goes to Edmonton.

You don't know who the Sabres use all the picks on.

They wouldn't get hindsight 20/20 BPA with every pick.

For instance, if the Sabres had 12, 13 (Vanek OS), and 26 in 2008, they could have come away with Tyler Myers, Erik Karlsson, and John Carlson.

There is the core of one of the best D cores in the NHL for a decade right there.

If they are picking at 10 (EDM) & 13 in 2009, they could have taken O'Reilly and Nick Leddy.

If Edmonton still bottoms out with Vanek and the Sabres pick 1 (EDM) & 23 in 2010, they could have taken Taylor Hall and Kuznetsov.

And if they have 1 and 16 in 2011, they could have Landeskog and Kucherov.

So, you get O'Reilly and Kuznetsov at center, Hall, Landeskog, and Kucherov on the wing, and Myers, Karlsson, Carlson, and Leddy on D.

That is an alternate reality that would have been fun to watch play out. But, there is like a 0.000000001% chance things would have played out just like that.

Wow. I think I would do it, It would give us a 2C right now with 70 point potential. We will be lucky if Mittlestadt turns into Nylander, small chance of Mittlestadt being better but is that small chance of Mittlestadt being better the reason to hold off from a guaranteed 2C now? If it is than that might be the reason to turn this down.
ughh cap space...Nylander wants some money.

How about reacquiring our second or third pick in 2019 and offer sheeting Nylander for one year. Nylander gets to play and gets arbitration rights next year. I think Leafs are trying to force Nylander into a longer and cheap RFA contract so that he cannot exercise arbitration rights. This would scuttle this and put pressure on the cap next year for them. Thoughts?

Well, factor in that most of those picks are under Golisano’s regime and development system, so is it take a bold guess and say no.

But it interesting to look at how it impacts today if we did.

I think it would’ve been more fun to watch where the Sabres end up instead.

But this assumes that the players would’ve developed the and would’ve had similar impact on the ice. I don’t think that is the case.

I'm ignorant when it comes to those compensations. Why are there gaps? If we offer $7M there's no compensation?

The Sabres lack the picks to sign players to certain OSs right now.

The major barrier is that the Sabres no longer own their own 2019 2nd round pick.

You have to own your specific picks in the next draft to sign a player to an OS.
