@Sentinel I like that list although there are many rankings there I don't agree with. I wish you could have continued to vote through it. Difference of opinion/different perspectives are always more interesting than participants who just try to fit into the middle.

I can't buy Selänne over Forsberg for instance just on positional basis. Selänne wasn't even an all situations winger. We went through this in the Klose discussion though. ;)


Edit: Now I see @Hockey Outsider also had Selänne over Forsberg...

I was 100% certain it was @Sentinel 's list. I didn't like it, but frankly, there were worse ones. I DID NOT NOTICE Boucher was absent, but other than Boucher, there was pretty much only Vezina who HAD to be there, but wasn't (and that's screener MXD talking, not user MXD). He also admitted not knowing much about Pre-WWII hockey. It shows. But I can't blame someone who shows that he doesn't know much about something he litterally says he's not knowing much about. A few "how did we even get there" moments (the gap between Lafleur and Clarke is very striking for someone who had Fedorov in the Top-40). Heavy on Russian/Wings, but, again, considering admission of blind spot about pre WWII could logically explain.

I didn't guess it was @Hockey Outsider 's list, though I suspected him to be a likely author. It's boring.

@ChiTownPhilly 's list was extremely interesting, and he clearly explained his rationale throughout the project. I did a double take when I saw there was only one winger between Ted Lindsay and Jarome Igina (...actually, make that a triple take). I also really couldn't understand Henri Richard roughly 50 spots below Milt Schmidt (the other way around would've been a head-scratcher, too). Oh, and there's this Crosby thing, too.

For one, to me it's obvious that Kharlamov should be above Clarke. We all know how they fared face-to-face and how low did the God of Two-Way Play have to stoop to stop Kharlamov.

The dissonance between my list and the voted results was becoming too large and too frustrating. So I stopped. I did not participate in the voting of Fedorov, Bure, Ullman, etc.

If I had to do the list over, the one big change would be: I would strike Richard from the Top 10 altogether. Soon he will be replaced by both Crosby and Ovechkin.

So you figure the sport made a big leap forward during the war, of all times? Your rankings of players that broke into the NHL during or immediately after the war seem in line with the consensus opinions, higher in some cases.

I've been trying to digest all of that information - I've been pleasantly surprised by how much there was. I've read through a fair bit of it, but I didn't really apply it to my list in a systematic way.

To be perfectly honest, I didn't spend a ton of time making my list. I was travelling in Asia at the time and hockey wasn't top of mind. (That's not to say I don't stand behind my list, because I do, but with a bit more time I'm sure I would have tinkered with a number of the rankings).

To speak to MXD's comment, I think my list was boring because 1) I've been posting here for more than a decade, so perhaps I've gradually drifted towards the group consensus on many players 2) I've posted lots of data over the years, so maybe my positions have influenced others and 3) since I rushed my list, I didn't spend a ton of time trying to identify "controversial" positions to fight over.

@Sentinel you see to have low rankings for many defensemen. Harvey at 18, Bourque at 21, Kelly at 31 (so much for Red Wings bias), Potvin at 35, Robinson at 48, Park at 61, Pilote at 67. Each of those rankings are probably defensible individually, but do you think overall you're tougher on defensemen?

A two-part question- and taking into account that it's one of the three most controversial portions of my list, it's right for me to be called out on it, and asked to explain myself. Well- here goes the first part:

I always felt that Crosby got too much credit for the Penguins success... and Malkin not enough. At the time I composed my list, the two most recent completed seasons helped underpin that belief. But-- with regard to Crosby/Ovechkin specifically, I have a trio of points:

A. Ovechkin continues to prep briefs for the case that he's the greatest LW of all-time. Bobby Hull would be tough guy to move around... but Ovechkin may yet win the day. If you are a longevity guy, he's starting to be worth podium consideration for greatest W of all-time, never mind laterality. [I'm not so much a longevity guy when it comes to Forwards, so there's that.] An incidental aside to this is that with Ovechkin, you get deployment-flexibility: as he can play RW just as effectively. Crosby might leak into the bottom-six of the discussion for greatest C of all-time, maybe. He's had significant stretches where he's not the finest C on his own team.

B. [What I consider to be the most relevant point]- I think that the blueprint for the "Sidney Crosby containment structure" exists in the public domain. Its construction requires some rare and valuable materials (impossible for many to even obtain), but it's out there. Zetterberg, Toews, Bergeron- maybe it's not out-of-line to say we're seeing another construction-site being put in place before our very eyes.

C. (The most personal and therefore objectively possibly the least meaningful point)- yeah, there's that whole "Greg Louganis/Klaus Dibiasi" thing with Crosby. [And visible instances where he runs the mouth when his acting isn't persuasive.] He's certainly far from the first player to bring the most distasteful aspects of European Football onto the ice, but he is likely the most significant popularizer of that stunt. I'm not alone in saying that it's having an overall negative impact on recent Youth Hockey development.

Okay, on to the second part of the question: how do I like 'em now?! When this season began, I had reason to think that the general trend for the Penguins would continue. I did not know then that Crosby would have a fine bounce-back Regular Season, and that it would be Malkin who would take a dump on his own C.V. Ovechkin's put another quality chapter into his book, too. Ultimately, I think it's more a case that I slightly over-valued Ovechkin than I under-valued Crosby. The space I got between them has narrowed.

When I made the rough-draft of my Prelim List, I started with Iginla around the border, like most of the rest of the Panelists. Then, I went to order my Wingers- and took a deeper dive into his output- and became more and more impressed. "Look at all the things he did, in virtual exile, there in The Outpost, with next-to-no help!" I thought. When Bathgate came up, the point was raised "just how much separates Bathgate from the likes of Iginla?"- in a manner that was intended to encourage caution with Bathgate. In my mind, it had the effect of adding honor to Iginla. Some of the dips in his regular season output can be explained by the fact that he often played full-on hurt.

So- he missed this Top-100... and to me, that's disappointing at a certain level. [I'm sure certain posters feel much the same way about, for instance, Ullman.] At least I know he'll get his plaque in Toronto soon enough. When that happens, maybe the records can be peeled back once again, assessments made, and maybe, just maybe, the idea of Iginla is a comfortable Top-100 player won't seem so outré.

While Sentinel's reasoning to rank Kharlamov higher was not, er, perfect, Clarke's action in 1972 still speaks for itself. Because of the slash, Kharlamov played five and a half games healthy, even though he played in 7 games.
