BobHolly39. All over the place.
Lists can be interesting to peruse, but voting patterns really tell the story when it comes to how participants respond to the discussions. The list of @bobholly39 would be right there among the ones I'd like to see in "before-and-after" versions. Just to cite four more historically prominent names among his movers, he reassessed Lemieux and Bobby Hull upwards, and grew more skeptical of Mikita and Sawchuk. In terms of that re-think, I'd say he went "four-for-four" with that. [I hold a minority opinion with Lemieux, I know.]

Another thing about that list is that he has a now-leading 15 "unrequiteds." [In personal top-100, but not on The Panel's final list.] It's not so much the quantity of the names that interests me, it's the names themselves. Let's look:
Doug Gilmour, Erik Karlsson, Ron Francis, Scott Niedermayer, Tony Esposito, Bernie Parent, Serge Savard... all stood for election.
Pavel Datsyuk... just missed standing for election.
Adam Oates... a little bit off-the-pace.
McDavid, Doughty, Recchi, Kariya....

all these aren't consensus names from the perspective of our project-- but few of us would be stunned to find these names on the list of a professional sports-media individual attempting such an exercise.

And that leaves- Luongo/Lundqvist.

Most of us have alighted (ossified?) into the position that there hasn't been a stone-awesome goaltender since Brodeur hung them up. I include myself in that company. Maybe I'm among the ones that have this wrong. The more curious point is that these names appeared on bob's list at the expense of Clint Benedict and Charlie Gardiner. Still, the voting pattern demonstrates that bob gave Praying Benny & Chuck a fair hearing, as shown by how he placed them on his ballots.

[Bob's CPDs, in addition to Benedict & Gardiner, were our CPD-champion Cowley, and Firsov.]

[Bob's CPDs, in addition to Benedict & Gardiner, were our CPD-champion Cowley, and Firsov.]
Part of the reason why Luongo and Lundqvist are so hard to grade is because of the nature of goalie awards, and how the additional teams and talent flowing to the goalie position has made it more difficult to be seen as elite via the reception of end of season awards. Take Lundqvist's peak, from 09-10 through 15-16, where he put up a .923 save percentage over 7 years. If you looked at all goalie performances over those 7 years, Lundqvist was the best of the full time starters. However, he only received 1 AS-1 and 1 AS-2 honor, for years where he had a .930 and a .926 save percentage. If you think of Lundqvist's true talent being a .923, then .930 is 2 standard deviations above his average, and .926 would be 1 standard deviation[1]. So for Lundqvist to get any postseason recognition, he'd need to post an above average year by his standards.

Contrast that to Jacques Plante, for his 7 peak years from 55-56 through 61-62, put up a .921 save percentage. He received 3 AS-1 and 3 AS-2 honors. The 3 AS-1 years had save percentages of .930, .925, and .923, while the 3 years for AS-2 were .920, .924, and .915. Goalie performance in that era was a bit more diverse, so you could say 2 of the 3 years Plante won AS-1 honors, he had +1 standard deviation on his true talent level of .921, and 2 of the 3 years that he won AS-2 honors, he had an average year. Because of the limited number of teams, that's still enough for Plante to receive the honor, he doesn't need to have an outlier season.

Basically what it comes down to is that in a 30 team league where 15 goalies are true talent .915 or greater, one of them is going to have a +2 standard deviation year, and a few others are going to have +1 standard deviation years, and those outlier years are going to win the honors over an average Lundqvist year. A goalie would basically need to be a true talent .930 for their average year to be considered All-Star or Vezina worthy. In a six team league, with 6 goalies competing for 2 slots, average years for good goalies can be rewarded.

You can try to account for this structural difference in two ways - either only consider AS-1 honors for the old goalies, or consider high finishes in All-Star voting or Vezina nominations to be equivalent of AS-2 honors for modern goalies. For me, that's why goalies are so hard to rank. You almost want to treat older goaltenders like baseball treats its 1880-era starting pitchers - just acknowledge that the stats generated were part of a different era that no longer exists[2].

You also have to account for team strength factors, with is a whole other can of worms. Take Ed Johnson's 63-64 season, where he managed a .914, basically a +3 standard deviation season for him, that got him 12 all-star votes in total. Given Boston's weakness at the time, that's probably the best save percentage he could have wrung out of himself; with mostly the same roster as the year before and the year after, the Bruins were -42 that year in Goal Differential compared to -83 and -87. It went unrewarded because that .914 was basically an average year for a Chicago or Montreal goalie in that era.

If you look at modern starting goalie outlier seasons since the lockout, as seen here: Player Season Finder | Hockey-Reference.com, of the top 25, only Antti Raanta, Cristobal Huet and Steve Mason had teams did not have a positive goal differential. It took Scott Wedgewood putting up an .893, Jose Theodore putting up an .881 or Ray Emery putting up an .894 to turn that differential negative.

[1 - I've been really casual with my definition of a standard deviation, basically switching between .005 and .01 with regards to save percentage. That's because it's really hard to define "true talent" as a goaltender, and team strength and simple variance complicate it even more. You could even argue that a .926 for a .923 true talent goalie like Lundqvist is within the realm of an average season, and only the .930 is a +1 sd outlier. The same also applies to a few of Plante's seasons. You just can't say without running everybody's career like 1000 times.]

[2 - If I had to place Henrik Lundqvist on the list of goaltenders that were ranked in the top 100, I'd put him somewhere between Sawchuk and Dryden and Tretiak, in front of Brimsek.]
