I was curious about Daley's progress. Broken ankles suck. It's not so much getting the muscle back in the leg but more the strength and stability of the joint. I've rolled my right ankle 3 times and it's considerably less stable than my left ankle.

Hopefully he doesn't have any adverse affects from the injury. We could sure use a mini-Letang on the 2nd pairing.

We'll be fine, Schultz with a full season on the Pens could probably be a mini Letang if Daley's ankle bothers him.

I can't even fathom what that Board of Directors meeting must have been like.

"okay, next on the agenda...do we as a group wish to sponsor the Pittsburgh Pengu"

"YES! YES! Yay! Definitely! YES! Absolutely! Dollar dollar bill ya'll!"

"Ok...we will sponsor the Penguins. Next...potato sack races at the next company picnic...yay or nay"

"Hmmmmm...I think I speak for every when I say this will require some time to study so that the best decision possible can be made taking into account several angles"

Haha!

I understand everyone gets injured but we get crazy injured. Cancer, blood clot, stroke, some never ending concussion symptoms brought on by a pinched nerve. You really learn about all sorts of life threatening ailments by watching Pens hockey.

If you mean making really boneheaded moves at times Letang I am with you. The rest not so much. Schultz was a pleasant surprise in being serviceable. But that third pairing was by all analytics measurables a significant drop from the first two pairings.

If that doesn't inspire confidence, I don't know what will.

I really like Schultz's game. They said he was a liability on defense but I didn't see it. He created a lot of opportunities for us once he got a chance to play. If he plays a full season, I could see him putting up some very good numbers.

My bet it Schultz ends up like Cole. Shoes flashes of brilliance every now and then even of stretches making us laugh at Edmonton, but ends up settling to be a rather solid bottom liner defensemen.

I think he's very similar to Letang offensively. His defense was also better than I expected it to be. I think we should be more excited about having Justin Schultz than we are.

Having Schultz & Cole as our 3rd paring might prove to be quite solid. One is an offensive specialist that showed to be reliable defensively in the playoffs, and the other is a defensive specialist that proved to be reliable offensively in the playoffs. I could see the 2 complimenting each other real well.

When that pairing was on the ice the other team scored a lot more than when the top two pairings were on the ice.

I like the Schultz and Cole pickups. But they are what they are.

I was pleasantly surprised by both of them. Give them time together & there's a lot of potential there IMO.

Cole-Schultz is a pretty solid bottom pair. If you expect anything more than that, you're gonna have a bad time. Both are inconsistent #5 defensemen who have stretches of playing like top-4 guys or healthy scratch caliber.

I would move Hornvist to take Kessel's spot. He seems like the player that most resembles Kessel's style of play (fast, right handed, good shot). Although he will be missed on the 1st line, I trust Sid to make it work without him.

I... don't really see the comparison. At all.

Hornqvist more or less has to stay with Crosby. We're already bankrupting the top six and especially Malkin for the sake of the "third" line. I really don't want to extend that to the captain and the dry vermouth to his vodka, or whatever. The guy does have to go up against the toughest matchups night after night and already has a big ol' question mark on his left side.

There's a new poll up for where Pooh will play, so any Schultz-Cole discussion would be more appropriate for that thread. You can find it here

I don't think there are two less similar forwards on our roster than Hornqvist and Kessel. Hell, most of our D-men have more in common with Kessel than Hornqvist does.

Right handed is the only part of that description that fits Hornqvist.

Yup, just our luck. UPMC is the perfect sponsor for Pens hockey

To be honest, I think Horny and Kessel are as far apart in terms of style as an NHL could possibly be. I think you were thinking of the wrong player? Or watching the wrong team?

Maybe he was confused because once the players started growing beards, Kessel and Hornqvist looked like brothers.

But yeah, Hornqvist isn't fast, he ws drafted so low because he was slow and had to work his but off just to have normal NHL speed. He's aggressive of the forechecking though, which might look fast in some circumstances. But once the pens get the puck it's mostly find space in front of the next take a bunch of hits, screen goalie and get a dirty tip in(which he's great at). Getting break aways and sniping goals is kessels style

Kessel is the real life reincarnation of the create-a-player a 13 year old kid would create in NHL16 on xbox. 100 rating in speed, 100 rating in wrist shoot, 20 in everything else.

Horny is that anomaly player who is a 65 rating in everything yet has an overall rating of 85.

I have high hopes... but low expectations. He'll probably stay a 5-6 guy with power-play abilities, which is fine. But I expect at least some level of refinement during a full year.

Yeah, there were a couple times when Kessel and Hornqvist scored goals and I thought it was the other one that scored. Hornqvist did a great Phil Kessel impersonation in game 1 against the Rangers.

Just read those updates. Holy hell, no wonder they call it the hardest trophy in sports to win! Half of our team was battling through a serious injury or infection, jesus.

Meh. I'll believe it once I start seeing some "Geno-esque" laser beams on the regular, again. By all accounts he's looked mostly-crap so far in this tournament. Which... to be taken with a huge chunk of salt. Exhibition games in early September for a tournament everyone seems pretty halfhearted about and all that.

So have a lot of the stars from Mcdavid to Ovi. I think guys with guarunteed spots are giving it a 80% effort right now, while those fighting for placement and line time are giving it near 100%.

Also the Russian coach was making so me odd choices in the line up though. He might be more excited to play against Canada, because Russia knows if they want to win, they almost surely have to beat them.

Some of Russia's top players have looked pretty lackluster so far, Ovechkin and Tarasenko coming to mind. I would say maybe they're not too psyched about this tournament, but Geno rushed back from elbow surgery so...

Kuznetzov has the puck on a string though; dude's slick.

Yeah. Kuznetsov is probably better than Malkin, at this point. Pretty depressing.

Malkin opted out of surgery, by the way.
