Visiting fan asking for some advice

Hey guys, right off the bat I want to say I come in complete peace. My wife and I decided in a spontaneous decision to get tickets for Game 5. I know absolutely nothing about Vancouver and have done basically no research. Any local spots or things to see would be greatly appreciated. So here's to Vancouver stealing one from us here in San Jose so we can go. You guys have a beautiful city and I'd love to come check it out. Cheers guys.

We are staying in downtown, we're going to have a car, and we don't have a definite time table. We'll probably stay for 6 or 7 days.

I'd heard of it, and I'm sure they don't do it justice, but I just looked at some pictures of it and I think my wife might just stay if we went there. She loves that s***

Depends on where you stay...
And if you get a car.
With a car...
You can drive up to Whistler on the Sea-to-Sky Highway...
Which is one of the most beautiful stretch of road I have driven on.
Whistler is also not half bad...
Even if you don't ski.
There are many other activities there...
Like driving a ATV...
Or do some river rafting.

There is also Granville Island...
Just off downtown...
On the other side of the bridge.
It has a very interesting market...
And a lot of performance centers.

But if you only stay in Downtown...
So that you are close to the arena...
And only depend on public transportation
Then just walk around Downtown.
There are all types of food...
From all continents...
Especially along Granville, Davies and Robson.
Robson is also the trendy street...
So you can both eat and shop...
And kill 2 birds with one stone.
At night...
If you want to check out the night scene...
Go to Gastown down on Waterfront...
With a lot of bars and clubs.
Gastown is also worth checking out during the day...
It is just a very nicely built street.

Do check out Stanley Park.
It is one of the highlights of the city...
And 1 place Vancouver is known for.

Do stay away from the Downtown Eastside...
Especially at night.
It is not that bad...
But it is certainly where all the unsavoury elements of the city gathers.

That is all I have.

If you're only around for a few days, make sure you take the Aquabus and check out Granville Island. Just getting into tourist season, so just follow the hordes and you can't miss it. Several hop-on hop-off bus tours operate; won't bother to link as they're all just a quick google search away. Hope you enjoy your stay.

And for about the millionth time, still don't understand why we don't have a stickied tourism thread. Heading into the summer months now, could probably save a lot of bandwidth. Just saying.

Honestly, you should probably just avoid the Downtown Eastside all together. You aren't missing anything positive.

Depending on how much time you have, another suggestion would be Tofino on Vancouver Island. However, you're probably looking at a good seven or eight hour commute.

It's gorgeous though, worth checking out. Plus, the way things are headed, you are going to need to do something nice for the old lady to make up for all the hockey you will be watching over the next few weeks

Truth.
Although the arena is on the outskirts of Downtown Eastside...
So it is hard to avoid.
Just don't venture in during the night.
Not that safe.

During the day...
Do check out the area around the arena though.
It is basically where Chinatown is...
And it has a beautiful Chinese styled garden called Sun Yat-Sen Garden.
There is a price for admission...
So just a headsup.

For Stanley Park...
I find it to be a very nice bike ride.
You can rent bikes...
Or if you want...
You can bring your bikes...
If you drive up here.
If you rent a car here...
Then forget what I said.

Vancouver is a pretty accessible for bikes...
