The tendons are a tricky thing, depending on how much damage was done to them. My brother was in an accident in high school and damaged his hand badly, much worse than the Rask injury for sure. His damage was more of a "smash" than a cut (Dr. said a clean cut would have been much better).

His tendon in a finger snapped after surgery. They took one out of his leg and surgically implanted it in his hand in an attempt to have a working tendon, and after a while it snapped as well. He had enough of surgery by then so he decided against trying to fix it again. He can press down with full force on the finger, but he has no ability to lift the finger up so to grab something, he basically has to force it between his thumb and finger.

Sounds like Rask's was more of a clean cut type and hopefully much easier to repair.
