There's no guarantee they have as high of production with the Panthers. The biggest impact here, is actually Gallant, who was fired by management after Tallon was removed for the GM position.

they had 45g combined last year, 49g this year. pretty sure they would have put up alongside barkov, trochek, dadonov and huberdeau.

pretty naive to think they wouldnt

How could management not see Marchessault's vision on the ice? You have to be blind to let a guy like that go.

Yeah I’m sure the “nerds” really hampered the team by trading Erik Gudbranson and Dmitry Kulikov two awful hockey players.

I’m sure Barkov and Huberdeau missing significant time last year had nothing to do with their bad season..
I'm not sure if you're unaware that they also fired Gallant, or that you just don't know the impact his firing had. His axing set the team back a year.

Is Huberdeau worth 20 points? Because that's how much Florida missed the playoffs by, and when Huberdeau, Barkov, March and Smith were in the lineup together Florida was a stellar 10-15-3

People need to stop being one sided. Old school people need to realize that analytics are for real and that they are extremely useful (cough, Tallon, cough)

Analytics people need to realize hockey isn't just played on paper and that you need certain players and especially coaches to successfully run a team.

You need a blend of people with each mindset to work together, or else you get a GM who trades a 40 goal scorer for squat, or you get a management team who changes half the people in the organization and fires a very good head coach and completely loses the room.

Both these options are not ideal.

Actually we missed by 14 points? We had 81, Toronto had 95 and made it (we might have needed 96 because ROW - too lazy to check).
As for the 10-15-3 stretch, that was at the end of the season when the team clearly quit on Rowe. And it was awful - they won the 5 game roadtrip only to have an epic meltdown when they won just seven of the last 24 games (5 of 22 before the meaningless game 81 and 82 wins). Not sure how you can make any conclusions from that.

I'm not arguing that firing Gallant was disastrous. I'm just sick of people pointing to the 81 point season ("After the 103 point season!") like it's a clear argument that settles everything.

Florida isnt the only team that helped Vegas. Others did as well. But it was the NHL not allowing teams to protect enough players that gave vegas good roster players and multiple high picks.

Look at Fleury as another example. Pens had to give up a 2nd for them to take him . Handcuffed.

Alot of teams have more than 7 good forwards on their team..or for some teams unproven younger guys with potential they didnt want to move. Also teams with more than 4 dmen. Anaheim forced to lose a good one.

There were some bad decisions by teams but Vegas was also setup great for the future..we knew this before their success.

Glad Seattle will be in the West too. Add another top team over there in 2020. Seattle should be selling playoff tickets asap.

Funny how Panther's fans don't even care that there GM is stupid enough to trade (2) almost P.P.G. Forwards .... FOR A 4TH ROUNDER!

That 81 Point Season the previous regiment had was due to injuries of key players. How stupid can you be? A lot of the 'old' GMs are getting fleeced by 'new' GMs. 'New' GMs use stats and analytics to find players who are 'GEMS'.

It's quite obvious a lot of people on HF have no idea about hockey analytics.

Trades like these make me feel a little better our GM isn't the only idiot out there, maybe he stands a chance of taking advantage of someone one day

The injuries played a significant part, but it wasn't the only thing:
- the firing of Gallant and replacing him with Rowe - can't stress out enough how spectacular disaster that was. He completely allienated the players, got the team quit on him, endangered Ekblad's future by tossing him in despite having a concussion days before... You can blame the Computer boys or Vinnie Viola for firing Gallant(there's some argument as to who actually was behind the firing) but the move was undeniably bad.
- Demers and the reconstruction of the defence - Yandle, the Gudbranson trade, Pysyk for Kulikov are all moves I can get behind, but we needed a shutdown 4D (at worst) to complement the group; instead we got Demers. Tallon moved Demers out (very meh trade from the value-standpoint but absolutely the correct move for the team), but that shutdown-Dman hole is still here and needs to be fixed this offseason
- the disastrous relationships with players, awful PR, firing the equipment guys, the "military takeover" - all that after a very successful 2015-16 season left sour taste for the players and the fans. Relationships and emotions matter; it should have been handled better.
- the reconstruction of our farm - strictly speaking, it was a good and necessary move long-term. We had a lot of older prospects in the AHL whose upside was "that fringe guy who doesn't hurt you too badly when you call him up for 4-10 games but doesn't do anything for you either". We replaced them with younger, more promising kids - and that's great, but suddenly we had the second youngest farm in the league and once the injuries hit, we didn't even have the fringe guys to fill in, we had a handful of AHLers and a few 19-20 year old prospects who should have been nowhere near the NHL but well there you go.

The analytics movement has done many things right, some that will benefit us long-term - but they've made some serious mistakes too, same as Tallon. To blame it all on injuries is a cop-out.
