WHL ANNOUNCES BANTAM DRAFT LOTTERY RESULTS
2013-03-20

Calgary, AB – The WHL Bantam Draft lottery was held today at the WHL Office in Calgary to determine the order of the first six selections in the first round of the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.

The WHL Bantam Draft Lottery involved the six non-playoff teams (Vancouver, Prince George, Brandon, Regina, Moose Jaw and Lethbridge) from the 2012-13 season. A team could only move up a maximum of two positions in the Bantam Draft.

The Lottery selection process was performed by Miranda Stacey from KPMG. The 2013 WHL Bantam Draft will be held in Calgary, AB, on Thursday, May 2, 2013.

A Regina Pats ball was drawn in the lottery, meaning Regina moves up two spots in the first round of the draft and will select second overall. The Vancouver Giants will select first overall, the Prince George Cougars will have the third selection, the Brandon Wheat Kings will have the fourth selection, the Moose Jaw Warriors will select fifth, and the Lethbridge Hurricanes will select sixth overall.

The order of the second round and all other rounds will be the inverse order of final 2012-13 WHL regular-season standings.

Players eligible for the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft will be 1998-born players who reside in Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

The second round and subsequent rounds are listed in the article. I removed them from this excerpt as that would make this post very long. Expectations are that the Giants will select Tyler Benson, a young phenom who has been touted by many to be one of the next great superstars in the CHL. Benson could have opted for exceptional status to play in the CHL a year earlier, but has apparently chosen not to. If the Giants draft him, we could see him at the Pacific Coliseum by the start of the 2014-2015 season.

Here is his eliteprospects.com page with his AMBHL (Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League) stats and accomplishments:

This year, he had 57 goals, 89 assists, and 146 points in 33 games for his team.

Congratulations, Vancouver!

YES, go for Benson. We need a forward more than Clague, though Clague sounds like he's pretty damn good. With Popoff, Stukel and Baer coming up the system, we need that big forward. 5'11", 190 at 14 years old only means that he still has a ridiculous amount of time to fill out. Could end up being 6'4", 225.

me too....I'm 10 years older than the kid.....I guess its about time to admit that I may not make it to the big leagues eh :sarcasm:

and I'm 10 years older than you....but I still have hope. Maybe someone, somewhere needs a fat middle aged guy who can't skate to take a beating in front of the net on the PP.

Johnny Bower won a Stanley Cup at 46. When that birthday came and went without a phone call, I knew I'd better go ahead and get my Grade Ten.
