Whats the difference between Samsonov's 19-20 and Vanecek's 20-21? One primary difference? Samsonov was the back up goalie. His games were chosen for him to provide tbe best change for success. He didnt play more than one game in a row and he didn't play the big games. When they gave him that big Pens game, he wasn't good and he wasn't good from there on. Vanecek played all the games. There was no choice. He played all the good teams and all the road games. He played both ends of a back to back.

Samsonov's first four starts of 2019-20 were the Islanders, Dallas, Colorado, and Toronto. Those are the easy starts? That's a division rival who ended up schooling them in the playoffs, a eventual Stanley Cup finalist, and two of the best offensive teams in the NHL. He also started against Tampa Bay, Carolina (x2), two more starts against the Islanders, and that Pittsburgh game. You know, the easy teams on Washington's schedule. Btw, he went 7-3 across those 10 games.

Vitek Vanecek cannot leave this team fast enough
Last season Vanecek saved Capitals when he was thrown into the starter role in his first ever NHL season after Lundqvist was unable to play and Samsonov f*cked the team by not following Covid protocol. VV played 37 out of 56 games and finished the season with okay-ish .908 SV%. Samsonov played 19 games with .902 SV%. Despite that fans still demanded Samsonov to be a starter for whatever reason. Both goalies are about the same age (26 vs 25), both of them played 24 games this season and they have about the same level of NHL experience. Yet one of them has 2.39 GAA / .915 SV% / .935 5on5 SV% and the other one has 2.88 GAA / .902 SV% / .912 5on5 SV%. Even though he has been constantly getting better stats than Samsonov, Vanecek still gets benched after Samsonov has one good game. "Fans'" and "journalists'" reaction is either:

A) We still don't know who to play. samSoNOv iS a BettER GOalie. Let's give him another chance. Surely he will be good one day.
or
B) OMG both of are goalies are so horrible. We need to trade for someone quickly, otherwise we will not win the cup.

First of all don't flatter yourself. Capitals are not winning the cup this year with any goalie. They are very likely going to the play-offs from the last place. The team has much bigger problems than a golie. When rumors spread that Capitals are trying to sign Fleury the "fans" were all cheering. This is a 37 year old with carreer SV% .913 - less than VV has this season. But apparently that makes him a legend. This season Fleury has 2.93 GAA / .908 SV%/ .915 5on5 SV%. What an amazing improvement he would be. Bear in mind that Fleury salary cap is $7 million while VV is playing for less than league minimum.

The other choice that "fans" want is Holtby, who was deemed not good enough anymore after the 3.11 GAA / .897 SV% numbers in his last Capitals season. This season he has 2.76 GAA / .913 SV% / .924 5on5 SV%. Decent, but still worse than VV.

A previous post here mentioned VV only had average 5on5 SV% last season. Okay. This season he has 3rd best 5on5 SV% out of all starting goalies while playing for the 16th best team.

TL;DR: VV is solid, all the proposed replacements are worse than him and I hope he gets traded away so he can play for a team that gives him respect and not for a team with such * fans who can't even spell his name.
