The only time a contract in the AHL counts against the cap is if it is above $1,075,000 (that's this year's number; in any given season it is calculated as league minimum + $375,000)
Ah k so they can be buried as a one way if it's below that, thanks for the info!

Can any Vegas fans give an honest scouting report on Nate Schmidt?

Not a Vegas fan but...

Great skater, excellent puck mover, holds the line and pinches very well, some physicality but doesn't throw many hits, mostly for establishing leverage. He's played some of the most difficult minutes in the league as a Knight with McNabb as his partner and performed well in those minutes. Stylistic comparable would be someone like Morgan Rielly.

So players on two way contracts in the NHL have their NHL salary counted against the cap while they're making their AHL salary?

no they make their nhl contract and their nhl salary count against cap

they make ahl salary in ahl

and if their nhl cap is big enough it will still count partly on the cap but thats the same for one or two way

How good is Nate at actually defending? Curious as I haven't watched him as much. Wonder if a Hughes Schmidt pairing would be good or not

Let's put it like this if they aren't playing together it's because Hughes is on the 2nd pair to get him easier matchups. Schmidt is a top pair 2 way D that will do well even against the oppositions best players. He's not elite at anything but he's pretty damn good at everything.

I know they landed a superstar but this still feels wrong.

Nate Schmidt was there from Day 1 and a huge
figure in the community off the ice (and on of course) for the team. And they dumped him solely to fit in the big stud from a rival.

Oh well, at the end of the day Vegas got better, at least on paper

I am really disappointed the Bruins couldn’t best that. LHD is their biggest need. Here is a guy who plays 22 minutes a night for one of the top contender and he goes for a 3rd round pick. Or were the Bruins on his 10-team no trade list? Maybe Schmidt was upset they want to trade him and put all the teams he thought might want him on the list (and forgot Van)?
That’s exactly what Schmidt did.
Did not want to move and picked 10 teams that had the cap room , needed a D and was rumoured to be interested . Assumed that the Knights wouldn’t move him in same division or that the Canucks didn’t have enough cap room .
No way my team (Devils) don’t match or beat the offer if they wer not on the list

This does help Vancouver with 5v5 offense he pushes the pace.
Schmidt does give back a bit 5v5 in his own zone.though but not that much

He is a right shot which Vancouver doesnt have any of
its a respectable trade from their stand point

He is better than Tanev
But keeping stecher and making this trade would have been amazing for Vancouver for their defense core.

Silly to not include Van on his list then. They were trying to get OEL just a few days ago.
