The Ottawa Fury won’t be taking part in the 2020 USL season. This is more than just financials as ownership OSEG did lose money in the operation.

The shut down has to do with the CSA – and likely CONCACAF not sanctioning the team to play in the USL. Since the USL is a US based league they need sanctioning from the governing bodies to play there. With the Canadian based CPL launching last year and completing this season, there is now a domestic league here and a reluctance for the CSA and CONCACAF to allow these arrangements to continue. The Fury nearly suspended for 2019 for the same reason but a late sanctioning took place.

Though OSEG supports the CPL they don’t want to join. Weather that means not now or not ever is up to debate. Some have suggested they don’t want to pay an expansion fee. Either way, them want wanting to move and not being allowed to stay leaves them with no where to play. CPL wants the market so it now opens it up for another ownership group to play there.

I'm more curious on the long term ramifications. If politics at the end of the day ended the USL in Ottawa. How soon will the Canadian based MLS teams be in the crosshairs? The Canadian based MLS teams are also subject to sanctioning since MLS is under USA Soccer and CONCACAF.
