First things first: The USHL released their 2021-22 schedule last Friday. Another regional based schedule, presumably to reduce travel costs for the teams.

The 2021-22 USHL Regular Season Begins September 23 and Concludes April 23

The United States Hockey League (USHL) and its participating Member Clubs announced Friday the 2021-22 regular season schedule.

The season will consist of 62 games for each team in a regionally-based schedule, similar to the 2020-21 season. Preseason matchups for the upcoming season will be released at a later date.

The 29-week regular season is scheduled to begin September 23 at the DICK’S Sporting Goods Fall Classic, and concludes with a full slate of games on Saturday, April 23. ...

This season will mark the return of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Fall Classic in Cranberry Township, Pa. For the fifth season, all USHL Member Clubs will descend on the Pittsburgh area to open the 2021-22 regular season with a pair of games each over a five-day event hosted with the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins. In conjunction with the USHL games, roughly 80 youth hockey programs from across the country will participate in one of the premier youth hockey events of the season.

Also returning for the 2021-22 season is the Frosty Cup, hosted by the Dallas Stars. This season’s event will feature the Tri-City Storm and Lincoln Stars playing a pair of games on January 28 and 29, 2022 in Dallas. The Storm and Stars will be the second pair of USHL teams to meet in Texas after the Chicago Steel and Green Bay Gamblers played a pair of games in Texas during the 2019-20 season.

This season will also feature the inaugural USHL American Cup from December 3-5, 2021 in Rochester, N.Y. The American Cup, hosted with Wegmans, will feature a pair of regular season USHL games between the Green Bay Gamblers and Youngstown Phantoms as well as a youth hockey component with teams from the 14U, 15U, 16U and 18U levels participating. ...

Seven Total Coaches Will Coach First Game in USHL This Season

Chicago, IL - When the United States Hockey League (USHL) season starts in September at the DICK’S Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic, seven coaches will have their first regular season game behind a USHL bench as Head Coach, including six new hires this offseason.

The new Head Coaches join an already established group of bench bosses in the United States’ lone Tier I junior hockey league that includes three Clark Cup Championship winning coaches (Mark Carlson - Cedar Rapids RoughRiders; Dan Muse - USA Hockey National Team Development Program; Brock Sheahan - Chicago Steel) and six coaches with more than 100 regular season wins. Carlson leads the returning USHL Head Coaches with 657 career USHL wins, which is second in league history.

Among those new to their role are two former NHL players Greg Brown (Dubuque Fighting Saints) and Matt Smaby (Waterloo Black Hawks) and four have prior experience with USHL Clubs, including Matt Curley (Des Moines Buccaneers), Scott Langer (Fargo Force), Rocky Russo (Lincoln Stars) and Tom Upton (Madison Capitols). Rounding out the group is Chadd Cassidy (Omaha Lancers) who comes to lead the Lancers after previously serving as Head Coach of the AHL’s Rochester Americans. ...

All 16 Member Clubs Welcome Players to Market for Beginning of 2021-22 Season

Chicago, Ill. - The United States Hockey League’s (USHL) 16 Member Clubs open training camps this week as the 2021-22 season officially gets underway.

“The opening of training camp is an exciting time for the USHL and all of our Member Clubs as it means we are officially in the 2021-22 season,” said USHL President and Commissioner Bill Robertson. “After the offseason, we’re looking forward to seeing our outstanding athletes back on the ice in all of our markets and welcoming back the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Madison Capitols to on-ice action this season.”

Cedar Rapids & Madison Re-Join On-Ice Action

After a storm caused building damage to the RoughRiders’ building prior to the 2020-21 season and COVID restrictions did not allow for the Capitols to take the ice last season, both teams will return to the ice for the 2021-22 season. The RoughRiders, led by the longest-tenured active coach in the USHL - Mark Carlson, look to return to the Clark Cup Playoffs for a second-straight season after an appearance in the 2018-19 season as the 2019-20 season did not feature Playoffs due to COVID-19. Madison will be led by its new Head Coach and General Manager Tom Upton, who was hired ahead of last season but has not been able to lead the team behind the bench yet. Upton is hoping to lead the Capitols to its first appearance in the Clark Cup Playoffs.

Both teams had their players on Protected Lists play for teams throughout last season after a preseason Dispersal Draft. Cedar Rapids will have players returning such as forwards Yusaku Ando and Nate Hanley who have appeared in a combined 194 USHL games over the past three seasons. Madison also brings back goaltender Simon Latkoczy, who is coming off a Clark Cup Championship performance with the Chicago Steel last season after posting a combined 19-3-0-2 record all last season with the Steel including a 1.83 goals against average and 0.938 save percentage during the Playoffs. ...

Lumberjacks take on USNTDP in 'Play with Purpose' charity hockey game

By Mike Sontag, Ryan Vallon, 09/07/21, 5:00PM EDT

MUSKEGON, MICH. - The Muskegon Lumberjacks will be heading to Plymouth, Mich. on September 18 for a 6 pm charity matchup with the United States National Development Program (USNTDP) U-18 in the 4th annual “Play with Purpose” hockey game. For one night only, these two teams will set their rivalry aside to help raise awareness and end distracted driving.

The game will be played to honor Mitchel Kiefer, who tragically lost his life in 2016 from a motor vehicle accident caused by a distracted driver. In 2017, the USA Hockey Arena dedicated their Olympic rink and posthumously renamed it the Mitchel Kiefer Memorial Rink.

Both teams, with the support of Gallagher-Kaiser, Hockey has Heart, and StopDistractions.org will dedicate this game to help raise awareness in the community about the deadly consequences of distracted driving.

A portion of the proceeds will support organizations focused on educating local communities about the dangers of distracted driving, changing driving behaviors and saving lives.

Advanced General Admission tickets can be purchased by calling the USA Hockey Arena Box Office at (734)-453-6400 Ext. 303. Tickets sold at the door will be $15.

The game will be broadcast on HockeyTV free of charge [subscription required]. In addition, Detroit-based Comcast subscribers can access the game on CN 900.

A pre-game ceremony and honorary puck drop will take place before the action kicks off. Autographs from both teams will be available after the game. ...

Top-5 Moments from the DICK’S Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classics of the Past

We Look Back at Some of the Best Moments of the USHL’s Time in Pittsburgh

Chicago, Ill. - The United States Hockey League (USHL) is set to return to the DICK’S Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic later this month for the start of the 2021-22 USHL regular season but before then, we take a look back at some of the best moments in Fall Classic history.

5) Getting Started

For the first years in Pittsburgh, the USHL conducted preseason games, but the 2017-18 season marked the first time the regular season kicked off with a building full of scouts and fans alike. The first regular season game at the UPMC complex was an exciting overtime contest between the Fargo Force and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on September 27, 2018. The Force found an overtime winner less than 90 seconds into the extra frame as forward Hank Crone picked up his second point and first goal (1-1-2) of the game and season.

4) Scorers Need Not Apply

In two seasons of regular season games, three netminders have registered shutouts in the first weekend of the season. The first regular season Fall Classic shutout came as Fargo Force goaltender Cole Brady turned aside all 36 shots the Lincoln Stars sent his way on September 26, 2019. Brady went on to be named Goaltender of the Week for his Fall Classic performance and finished the season with a 21-12-3-2 record, 2.79 goals against average and 0.903 save percentage in 39 appearances before being selected by the New Jersey Devils in the 2019 NHL Draft (Round 5, 127 Overall).

Three nights after Brady’s whitewashing, Nicholas Grabko (Green Bay Gamblers) and Drew Commesso (USA Hockey National Team Development Program) were both perfect with 21- and 26-save performances, respectively. Grabko and Commesso each finished the season with a 0.917 save percentage, which was tied for second-best among all league netminders who played in 10-or-more games.

3) Late Game Heroics from USA Hockey NTDP

The NTDP Under-18 squad from the 2018-19 season was one to be reckoned with, featuring eight NHL Draft picks in the First Round, and its roster was put to the test on September 30 at the Fall Classic. After eventual 15th Overall selection Cole Caufield (2019, Montreal Canadiens) opened the scoring with a powerplay goal midway through the first period before the Omaha Lancers answered back halfway through regulation. With the game tied late, eventual Third Round selection Dominick Fensore (2019, Carolina Hurricanes, 90th Overall) finished off a feed from first overall selection Jack Hughes (2019, New Jersey Devils) with 11 seconds left in regulation to give the NTDP the win. That season’s roster went on to have 17 active players selected in the NHL Draft, including Hughes, Caufield and Fensore.

2) A Hat Trick of Hat Tricks

Three different skaters have registered hat tricks at the Fall Classic including Des Moines Buccaneers forward Reed Lebster and Muskegon Lumberjacks forward Egor Afanasyev, who tallied a trio of goals in back-to-back nights during the 2018-19 season.

Lebster opened the scoring on September 27, 2018 as the Buccaneers battled the Madison Capitols. The University of Massachusetts skater went on to give Des Moines a 3-1 lead in the second period before capping off the hat trick with his third power play goal of the game later in the middle frame.

The next night, Afanasyev’s hat trick helped lead the Lumberjacks to a 4-3 win over the Fargo Force. The future Nashville Predators Draft pick (2019, Round 2, 45 Overall) gave Muskegon the lead with a pair of goals less than four minutes apart late in the second period before finishing off the hat trick with an insurance goal midway through the final period. Afanasyev is currently a forward in the Predators’ system after collecting 76 points (33-43-76) in two seasons with the Lumberjacks.

The next time the USHL came to Pittsburgh, Cedar Rapids RoughRiders forward Robby Newton tucked away a trio of goals in a 6-2 win over the Youngstown Phantoms on September 26, 2019. Newton went on to collect 12 points (6-6-12) in 22 games with the RoughRiders before being traded to the Sioux City Musketeers for the final 36 games of his USHL career.

1) Don’t Count Them Out

Back on September 27, 2018, the Lincoln Stars and Sioux Falls Stampede both trailed late in the game but the deficit would not last. The Stars were squaring off with the Chicago Steel and the Steel appeared to seal the game with an insurance marker with 2:22 to play when a goal from future Buffalo Sabres draft pick Owen Power (2021, Round 1, 1st Overall) made it a 4-2 game for Chicago. Just 36 seconds later, Lincoln defenseman Hunter Carrick picked up his first of the season and was followed 63 seconds later, with 43 seconds remaining in the game, by a game-tying goal from Shane Pinto. The Stars went on to grab the overtime game winner and at the end of the season, Pinto was selected by the Ottawa Senators at the 2019 NHL Draft (Round 2, 32nd Overall).

Just an hour after Lincoln capped off their comeback, the eventual Clark Cup Champion Sioux Falls Stampede finished an overtime comeback of their own. After the Central Illinois Flying Aces made it a two-goal game with a pair of powerplay goals, Sioux Falls tallied 44 seconds later but Central Illinois regained the two-goal lead 1:08 after that. The Stampede would not be denied, picking up a pair of goals in the final seven minutes of regulation before eventually winning the game on an overtime powerplay goal from Artyom Ivanyuzhenkov.

Season starts Thursday @ Noon EDT, Green Bay Gamblers vs. Waterloo Black Hawks @ UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. This roving reporter will be posting observations in this thread from my Fall Classic visit. I tried to set a schedule of attendance that would allow me to see at least one game per team, but eventually realized watching that much hockey in 4 days was almost as hazardous to my health as sitting in an ice cold arena for that many periods surrounded by maskless hockey fans. So my reports will be spotty, but first-person. :cheer:

The first 8 minutes of the opening game @ Fall Classic is summed up by this tweet ...

Waterloo was all speed & Green Bay was all chase during the early part of the 1st period. But the Gamblers finally caught their collective breath & took control of the game, which was over surprisingly quickly. Final Score = GB 5 - WAT 2.

Me 'n' Mrs. JMC also attended Game #3, Madison vs. Des Moines. Both teams had vocal supporters in attendance, with the Bucs fans being particularly boisterous. The Capitols opened the scoring just a few shifts in, their 1st goal in 19 months. :handclap: But the Buccaneers didn't let that rattle them, and scored 4 goals in the following 20 minutes of play to all but seal the game. Des Moines forechecked aggressively & clogged up center ice effectively until the last 10 minutes of Period 3. But Madison's shooters were still kept on the perimeter against strong Team D, even as things got chippy & the Bucs took unnecessary penalties. Final Score = DM 6 - MAD 3.

That was it for the old folks on Day #1. The rink got increasingly cold as the afternoon wore on, which seemed to reduce the early puck dancing but did nothing to increase our rinkside comfort. More layers are in order for the rest of this event. :puppy:

The JMCs attended Games #6 and #8 of the new USHL season on Friday afternoon. Another cold but entertaining pair of matches.

First on the schedule was Madison v Tri-City. Both teams had a rooting section in the stands, but I was disappointed with the Tri-City crowd (who are typically non-stop chatter & chirp) displaying only occasional emotion. The Capitols started their second game with more energy than Thursday's opener, but the Storm scored first early in the opening period. MAD was unable to beat TC's 6'1" 201 lb. rookie goalie & Quinnipiac commit Chase Clark until deep into the 2nd. The game ended regulation @ 1-1, then Tri-City earned the victory in 3-on-3 OT play on a goalmouth scramble tally by BU commit forward Jeremy Wilmer. No fault of Madison's rookie goalie Marino Ramirez (Chicago native & Shattuck St. Mary's product), who played a very solid game in the Capitols' net. Final Score = Tri-City Storm 2-Madison Capitols 1.

The late afternoon game @ UPMC Lemieux Pitt-ed Omaha against Dubuque. More vocal fans-in-stands for each side. This game looked destined for OT as well, with the teams trading pairs of second & early third period goals. But Pittsburgh native forward Shawn O'Donnell scored the ultimate game winner @ 8:19 of the 3rd, and his teammate & Denver commit Tristan Lemyre wrapped up the scoring at the 18 minute mark on an ENG. The Lancers losing goaltender Kevin Pasche remained on the bench after that, with a 6-on-4 advantage in the closing 1:46 after a final DBQ minor penalty, but they could not beat the Saints' Denver commit goaltender Paxton Geisel. Final Score = Dubuque Fighting Saints 4-Omaha Lancers 2.

ETA
: At least a half-dozen players for the Omaha Lancers were skating without name badges on their jerseys. Last-minute recruits, or not enough budget for the equipment manager to buy a needle & a spool of thread? :dunno:

Man Adam Fantilli is a player. First time seeing him since his days at Kimball Union
He was impressive in last season's playoff championship run for the Steel. The JMC's will stick around UPMC Lemieux tomorrow evening for the CHI v Sioux Falls Fall Classic wrap-up game. Oughta be a good way to close the event.

Game #15, Fargo vs. USNTDP, had enough action that The JMCs stopped while we were ahead for the 2021 Fall Classic event. The U18 boys - who had the overwhelming majority of supporters in the UPMC Lemieux Rink 1 stands - came out like they were shot from a cannon, scoring on their first shift @ 0:18 (goal by Wisconsin native forward Isaac Howard, who added an assist on a later Team USA tally). Fargo was obviously caught off-guard by the speed & physicality of their opponents, as well as their crisp & accurate passing (cross & up ice) and their aggressive forechecking & backchecking. The Force were lucky to get to the first intermission at just a 3-0 deficit, with Howard & Michigan commit Frank Nazar III & Minnesota native Jimmy Snuggerud each recording 2 points.

FGO must've gotten a serious pep talk during the initial break, as they finally started hitting the U.S. team in all three zones and became aggressive on the forecheck to counter the U18's speed. That strategy paid off, with the Force scoring 3 goals vs. 1 to exit the middle period @ 4-3. Six different Fargo players recorded points in that period, with Clarkson U bound 6'1" 193 lb. forward Erik Bargholtz starting the run on an unassisted shorthanded goal about 8 minutes in. The second period flow was interrupted by a total of 11 minor penalties (6 for USNTDP & 5 for Fargo), which contributed to slowing the game to the Force's advantage while yielding 2 extra-man goals for them.

Fargo started the 3rd period with more energy, and Latvian forward Felikss Gavars tied the game @ 2:14 to lift the small contingent of Fargo fans out of their seats. From that point foward, it seemed like several of the USNTDP players were outta gas; but their fresher teammates did manage to attack the Fargo zone & get chances regularly throughout the remainder of regulation.

Fargo starting goalie & BU commit Anton Castro suffered either one of those mysterious "lower body injuries" or a charley horse late in the 3rd; but with a brief pause for trainer intervention, he finished regulation holding on to the 4-4 tie & returned for the OT session. Each team had 2 SOGs in the 3-on-3 extra period, but Fargo completed their rally on a GWG by Calgary native Tyson Gross with the assist from Gavars. Final Score = Fargo Force 5-Team USA (U18) 4.

It was a good way to end our USHL Fall Classic experience (especially since I was sporting my Fargo jersey - sorry, @NTDP), and I'd recommend future attendance for any hockey fan who can appreciate junior hockey & the opportunities the game brings to these young athletes. :cheer:

A quick look at team stats from tbe USHL's Week No. 1 for the 2021-22 sesson ...
  • Defending champs Chicago Steel went 2-0 at the Fall Classic, with 9 GA and 3 GA.
  • The Des Moines Buccaneers & Tri-City Storm also went 2-0 at the season-opening event. The Bucs notched a League-high 12 GF.
  • In their return to play after a year off, the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders were 1-1 with just 1 GF in each game. But they "dominated" another stat, with their 62 PIMs outpacing Des Moines & the Muskegon Lumberjacks by 25 mins in the bin.
  • There were 3 winless clubs coming out of the Classic, all Eastern Conference teams: the returning Madison Capitols, the Lumberjacks & the Yougstown Phantoms. MAD had an OT loss & Muskegon lost a shootout game, giving each of them 1 standings point. Both Phantoms losses were in regulation.
And now they are all on to Week No. 2.

USHL Returns to Home Markets to Open 2021-22 Season

10/01/2021, 10:30AM CDT BY USHL

NINE MEMBER CLUBS WILL PLAY IN FRONT OF HOME FANS THIS WEEKEND

Chicago, IL - After opening the United States Hockey League (USHL) in Cranberry Township, Penn. last weekend at the annual DICK’S Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic, USHL Member Clubs return home this weekend to play in front of their home fans.

This season marks the 20th as a Tier I junior hockey league, which is the premier and lone Tier I junior hockey league in the United States. ...
