STEEL TRAVEL TO FARGO FOR GAMES 3 & 4 OF CLARK CUP FINAL

... With the 2021 Clark Cup on the line, the best-of-five championship series between the Chicago Steel and Fargo Force shift to North Dakota this weekend for Game 3 on Friday, May 21 at 7:05 pm CT and Game 4 on Saturday, May 22 at 6:05 pm CT. Both contests will be played at Scheels Arena in Fargo. ...

This postseason, (Chicago forward Matt) Coronato is the only skater to reach double-digits in points with seven goals and three helpers in six games. Fargo forward Tristan Broz ranks second with nine points (3G, 6A) in seven games played.

Chicago has not made the trip to Scheels Arena since a two-game set last season on Oct. 25 & 26, 2019. The Steel swept a two-game weekend series with a 3-1 win on Oct. 25 and a 7-4 victory the following night.

Chicago forward Sean Farrell tallied a three-point night (1G, 2A) in the win on Oct. 26 and Coronato picked up a helper in both matchups. Dawson Pasternak registered a helper in the win on Oct. 25. Force forwards Broz and Mason Salquist both reached the back of the net in the 7-4 loss against the Steel on Oct. 26.

Chicago was 17-6-3-1 on the road during the regular season and won its only road playoff game to date, 5-4 over the Muskegon Lumberjacks in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Final on May 8. The Steel put together back-to-back victories on consecutive nights in road games on three separate occasions during the 2020-2021 regular season.

Fargo finished 16-11-0-0 at home during the regular season and defeated Sioux City 2-0 in Game 2 of the Western Conference Final on May 8, its only home playoff game to date. The Force charted two straight wins on home ice in as many days in four occurrences this year. ...

Clark Cup Final Preview (Games 3 & 4)

By Force Staff, 05/20/21, 3:30PM CDT

The Fargo Force are back on home ice this weekend for games 3 and 4 of the Clark Cup best-of-five championship series. The Force and the Steel both head into Friday and Saturday’s games with one win apiece meaning the Clark Cup is within reach for both teams this weekend.

The Force took game one last weekend 3-0 highlighted by a big 20 save shutout from goaltender Andrew Miller, followed by a 4-1 Chicago win the following night thanks to two empty net goals late in the third period.

Fargo’s defense in both games last weekend stifled the explosive Chicago offense, shutting down many Steel opportunities and allowing only 20 SOG in night one. The PK was on fire for the Force going 8/8 against the leading power play team in the league. Goaltending also played a huge factor in last weekend’s success as Miller made some huge saves to keep the Force in it at all times.

Chicago played a solid defensive game as well, getting sticks on pucks and breaking up some big Force opportunities. This weekend’s contest will be all about capitalizing on chances, as neither team has given up much in this Clark Cup Final series. Taking advantage of every opportunity will make the difference in these two upcoming games. ...

First media timeout, no score with about 12 minutes left in the opening period. So here's the USHL Clark Cup Finals trivia item of the night, courtesy of the Fargo play-by-play guy ... the Fargo-Moorhead Ice Sharks (USHL franchise from 1996 to 2000) was moved to Illinois in 2000 & became the Chicago Steel. You learn something new every game. :teach2:

And with just 43 seconds left in the opening period, the Steel steal (no, I didn't stutter) the puck in the Fargo half of the ice & Erik Middendorf gives Chicago the lead again. Assists to Mackie Samoskevich & Coronato.

End of one period, Steel 2 - Force 1. Waiting for penalty announcements from a skirmish @ the horn. Somebody(s) could be playing short to start the second period.

Fargo's Brennan Boynton stops a shot from the point but loses sight of the rebound. CHI goal to Coronato (his 3rd point of the night) with about 14 minutes left in the 2nd, assist to Ryan Ufko. 3-1 lead for the Steel.

Josh Doan fakes a pass & beats Boynton to give the Steel a 4-1 lead with an unassisted tally @ 10:40 of the 2nd. Fargo brings Andrew Miller in to replace Boynton.

ETA: Sean Farrell awarded an assist much later.

End of 2 periods, Steel 4 - Force 1. Fargo had offensive surges in the first 3 & the final 3 minutes of that period, but Chicago dominated the other 14. The referees put away the whistles in the middle stanza, but the boys didn't get too carried away with their freedom. Some shoving again at the horn, but the linesmen separated the scrum & sent the teams to their respective rooms to think about it.

Sam Lipkin of the Steel whistled for a hooking call in the 3rd.

ETA: Chicago had the early offensive chances during the Fargo man advantage. And after one of those opportunities, more penalties were handed out for both sides.

7:17 to go, media timeout. Physical play has continued, as frustrations run high on the home team.

Tristan Broz to the box for a retaliatory infraction @ 16:15. Steel back to the PP.

ETA: And Fargo's Ryan Richardson joins Broz in the bin for a crosscheck.

And Adam Fantilli gives the Steel a 6-1 lead late. And ... 7-1 Steel on a goal by Lipkin. Both 5-on-3 goals. Scheels Arena is emptying with less than 2 minutes left.

ETA: Fantilli's goal assisted by Ian Moore. Colton Huard gets the helper on the Lipkin tally.
