If a player let say are born in New York or something like that. And when he turn 16-17 can he be drafted and play in QMJHL? or is there some rules that prevent that?

If a player let say are born in New York or something like that. And when he turn 16-17 can he be drafted and play in QMJHL? or is there some rules that prevent that?

A player from New York cannot be drafted into the QMJHL... he can however be drafted into the Ontario Hockey League and there are many players this year who will be drafted out of NY into the OHL... Most notably, Jeremy Stocker.

There are SEVERAL Americans playing in the Canadian Hockey League.

Off the top of my head... Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania are all OHL players.

Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island are all QMJHL.

California, Washington, Minnesota, Colorado, Texas are all WHL.

That seems to be the trend, but what is the official rule? Does anyone know? In that case, Wisconsin is also OHL because John Kessel was chosen by Saginaw last draft.

It has to do with where they and their families live (citizenship) in their draft year. Going to boarding school in Connecticut doesn't matter. It's where the family lives.
But for the most part, where they're born is where they live. The Q has all 6 states in New England. Mass, Ct, RI, NH, VT and Maine. In Canada the Q has Qc, NB, NS, PEI and the players in Nfld have the choise of the Q or OHL.

So Roland Melanson has a son!? Mathieu Melanson as been drafted in the 8th round by Minnesota, maybe a steal? (If his father shown him how to keep the goals)
