Benning originally said he wasnt interested in getting rid of bad contracts by attatching assets with them. However there have been many rumors floating in Vancouver that his tune has changed for a couple of reasons.

1. He was using the 1st round pick to try and fetch a top pairing Dman (OEL) however, Nate Schmidt was gifted to them for a 3rd rn pick.

2. Rumor is Mike Hoffman is quite interested in joinging Vancouver if they were able to move some salary out and fit him in. Possibly on a short term show me deal so he can pump his stats playing on the 4th ranked Van PP and on a line with either Pettersson or Horvat

3. Benning possibly thinks this upcoming amatuer season will be a write off. Whether its going to be shortened or cancelled, he thinks the draft class will be extremely under-scouted and thus he can get great players without necessarily having a high 1st round pick.

Having said that,

would there be interst in Eriksson + Canucks 1st round unprotected pick without salary going back to Van?

Eriksson has 2 years left with 6mil AAV but his actual owed money is 5 mil total.

We give Eriksson a lot of flack here in Vancouver because he is over-paid but the truth is he is still a very reliable and responsible bottom 6 player. If he made 1 mil per year, nobody would say a word.

In fact I think he can even fetch a 6th rnd pick or so in next years trade deadline on an expiring contract. He would make for a good depth move and we see it happen every year at the deadline.

Anything can happen this season and that Canuck's 1st can be a lottery. They lost Markstrom, Tanev, Stecher, Tofolli. Anything can happen especially in an all Canadian division.

Canucks obviously do this to free up cap space and possibly sign Hoffman. Basically they are trading a 1st for Hoffman and cap space.

Another option would be less significant contracts like one of Sutter, Roussel, Beagle, Baertschi attached with a 2nd round pick.

Again, someone like Sutter, who is on an expiring contract and is a right handed centre can probably fetch a 4th round pick or so at deadline.

Any takers?

Eriksson + 1st?

Sutter + 2nd?

Kings take Eriksson for an unprotected first. He matches up with LA’s timeline perfectly. The Kings have a ton of money coming off the books over the next two years with no significant raises due. It just makes too much sense.

The Kings could possibly leave the 2021 draft with one of Power, Clarke, Lambos, Edvinsson, or Hughes, plus a guy like Jesper Wallstedt.

I think I'd accept and be okay with it.

Eriksson would be off the books this year which would leave the Canucks with around 10 million in cap space.

Then next year they sign Pettersson and Hughes to extentions, lets say 20 mil combined, give and take a couple of millions. However they lose the following contracts

Eriksson- 6 mil
Edler 6 mik
Suttern 4.3mil
Pettersson- 1 mil
Hughes- 1 mil
Pearson- 3.75 mik
Baertschi- 3.3 mil
Benn 2 mil.

That's 26 mil of cap space, plus the 10 mil cap space this year minus Virtanen's new contract and if they dont sign any other free agents.

Canucks might have the option to go big game hunting one year sooner than anticipated if they were able to make this trade with LA

Eriksson, Virtanen and a 2nd.

For a conditional 7th if Virtanen scores 20.

Hell no, especially if it's unprotected.

If Holby/Demko struggle, the Canucks could easily be a lottery team next season, especially in a deep Canadian division, and the volatility/added variance of a shorter season.

It's not like this team is one Mike Hoffman away from being a legit contender, let the LE contract play out another year and then explore options next season when he's easier to dump with only 1 year left and a lower actual salary(compared to his cap hit).

Nope. It has to be a protected first. Canucks might miss playoffs if Holtby sucks. You cant give up a lottery pick even for Eriksson.

Terrible idea. And doing it to sign Hoffman out of everyone makes it even worse, do not want that pos with his creepy wife anywhere near our team.

I think Ottawa would do it especially since Eriksson is getting paid only 5M in real money.

I mean they'd be crazy not to.

Seems logical for a few teams. Is Eriksson worth anywhere near $2.5 mill a year as a player? And what is buyout cost and penalty for next year?

Cap is ugly this year and next year they expect the same or worse situations for teams.....cap space trades will cost you you are going to at least on paper have to overpay.....As far as scouting they've been scouting these guys for years it will be more difficult but They are all in the same boat with more limited looks....they should be playing in the other leagues there is no science to back up shutting down everything ....open it up I'll go see games in person if people want to mask up than mask up......

Marleau had only one year left and cost Leafs a 1st round pick.

Eriksson has two years left and therefore Canucks need to send two 1st round picks. One 1st round isn't going to cut it in today's flat cap environment.

In a world where players could get covid at anytime and have to sit out, or spread it to teammates, trading an unprotected 1st seems like a very risky move.

Under normal circumstances I would say it’s smart. Get rid of Eriksson, use that money to sign Hoffman. With the addition of Hoffman, Schmidt, Holtby.. that nucks team is not missing the playoffs.

But, again, Covid throws a huge money wrench into that. Look at what’s happening to the Patriots. On top of the world after beating the Raiders then BOOM. Covid fu*** it all up

Canucks are not winning the 2021 Stanley Cup. Like 50% chance we dont even make the Cup finals, so no point giving up our first. Just live thru two more years of this and hope the pain forces Benning to never make such a mistake again

Most teams don’t have $6M in free space.

Other teams like Tampa will be competing for the use of this same space.

Only about 5 teams have $5Zm in space.

The other issue....

Toronto gave up a 1st for one year of a cap dump.you think 2 years come at the same price?

One yr of Suter would be easier for teams to handle...but the add on eould also be your 1st

Nucks were a clear bubble team
Holtby vs Markstrom
Tanev vs Schmidt
These are a wash
If you sign Hoffman doesn’t put you over some threshold.

Look at other teams and the moves they make. Sure they could make a 12 team xpanded playoffs with all 3 california teams going through a rebuild..that leaves everyone in.

Depends how much faith you have in Demko. I have quite a bit of faith in him, but the Canucks were a below average team with very good goaltending last year. If you don't get the goaltending that could very easily be a lottery pick.
