No politics, of course, but this happened.

Russia destroyed the ice arena in Druzhkivka

JANUARY 03, 2023
"Altair" was the home arena of HC "Donbas" for 7 years
On the night of January 2, Russia launched two missile strikes on the city of Druzhkivka. One rocket hit the very center of the city, 2 wounded were reported. Another missile hit Yakovlivka. Deputy Head of the Office of the President Kyrylo Tymoshenko reported this in Telegram.

As a result of rocket fire, the Altair ice arena was destroyed. It was this ground that became the home of the hockey club "Donbas" since 2014. On the basis of the Druzhki Arena, the largest children's and youth sports school in hockey and figure skating worked in Ukraine. The arena hosted championships of Ukraine, international competitions, mass cultural events, and was a favorite place of recreation for the citizens and guests of Druzhkivka.
This is the third home that the Donetsk club has lost due to the Russian occupiers - the Palace of Sports "Druzhba" in Donetsk, the Mariupol Ice Center, and now "Altair"...

It's shameful how they target civil infrastructure. The whole war is shameful.

Their original arena was ruined during the Donbass situation back in 2014, they are having some bad luck.

There’s pictures of mattresses, ammo boxes etc, it was a military used building. I do agree with your second statement though.
It was a warehouse for humanitarian aid for locals. There were no ammo supplies or else it would still be detonating and nothing would be left. And those were not mattresses but insulation mats used to insulate roofs and walls.

Thank God it's just an empty building that can still be rebuilt. There were maternity wards and hospitals full of people targeted and bombed by russians. Sorry, no international hockey for you

With involvement in Z-propaganda Russian hockey makes its international return in the foreseeable future even less likely than it already is otherwise.

The original HC Donbas arena was under Russian control since 2014 and absolutely nothing was done to restore hockey there. One would think that a "liberated" civil society would do that organically and yet it was in Ukrainian-controlled Druzhkivka that hockey continued to be played.

Donetsk has been under constant Ukrainian shelling since 2014, so it wasn’t exactly the place people wanted to go play hockey.

All of these hockey facilities were destroyed by Russian shelling, despite that also in Druzhkivka hockey continued close to the frontlines until it no longer could.

In Donetsk there were battles outside the city around the airport many years ago, but in the city there have been no battles. The reason why there has been no recovery whatsoever in hockey or otherwise is the extremely bad governance by the corrupt Russian occupation authorities, so much so that even pro-Russian residents with any initiative have long fled disillusioned to Russia. If someone among them still plays hockey it's in Moscow. Projects like HC Donbas can only continue to exist in free Ukrainian territories, as they have.

Can you point me to something to explain this to me? I wasn't aware Russian hockey had gone down that road.

Is there proof of who did the shelling? Not that it matters because the situation is horrible for all involved but back in 2014 when HC Donbass arena was first damaged it was claimed that Ukraine did it (probably to hurt Russian interests and stop the team functioning etc)

Now, you mention no battles etc have been taking place in Donbass, but why would anybody not involved wish to go play hockey there and potentially become involved? Remember the soccer team in Chechnya? They even had to play in specially secure training centres and have security to and from games and this is in Chechnya only a few years ago, so why would anybody wish to go to Donbass, one of the key cities in the conflict?

Hockey hasn't recovered in Donetsk because a low intensity war has been raging around the city for almost a decade now.
Shelling and sniper fire are a constant occurence only 12km away from the arena.

But you're saying hockey should have recovered because battles aren't occuring in Donetsk city proper? Yeah okay ace.
