UEFA set to launch third European club competition

Chairman of the European Club Association Andrea Agnelli has revealed proposals for a third continental competition could be approved.

A third continental club competition that would commence in the 2021-22 season is pending approval from UEFA, according to the European Club Association (ECA).
ECA chairman Andrea Agnelli stated the proposed new tournament would increase the number of clubs playing on the European stage each season to 96 - an increase of 16.
No details have been announced, but it is expected to run alongside the Champions League and the Europa League, although reports suggest the latter competition could be restructured.
"Pending approval of the UEFA Executive Committee, the 'green light' has been given to introduce a third competition, bringing the overall number of clubs to 96, as of the 2021-22 season," Agnelli told the ECA General Assembly.
Agnelli, also the president of Serie A champions Juventus, called for "more international [European] games and less domestic" matches earlier this year.
The launch of a European Super League has long been mooted, but it is claimed the new competition will instead be aimed at teams from the continent's weaker nations.
Agnelli also hinted at the ECA General Assembly that further changes to the international calendar are being considered, despite the launch of the Nations League.
"A detailed assessment of the existing international match calendar is required prior to presenting a new model post-2024," Agnelli added. "The current model needs modernising."

Cup Winners?

That used to be a good one, as teams from non-traditional power countries would break through sometimes.

So let's sum up.
UEFA had 3 perfectly good competitions, with a rich history.
To make sure big teams didn't get eliminated early and got max money, they changed everything and put all the interest in one single competition by creating the CL. So they have only 2 competitions.
Now, UEFA is targeting coming BACK to 3 cups, but still not being true to the word CHAMPIONS league. They have apparently no intention either to have eliminated CL teams eliminated period. They'll still qualify for the EL.

It just doesn't make sense to have a 3rd european competitions with even less appeal than the EL.

Remember the UI Cup? I expect something of that caliber and degree of attractiveness. It sounds like nonsense. How would this be marketable? Surely for participation to make sense for clubs you need TV rights revenue and how much can that possibly be? No-one outside the fanbases of the involved teams will be interested..and even in those fanbases it's likely to be of little interest to the more casual fans. And we'd probably be talking about clubs like Mainz, Southampton, Torino or Getafe here..so those fanbases aren't all that big to begin with.

The return of the Intertoto Cup purely for the Andorras and San Marinos of the world

Prize pot of £3.50 and a trip to the football museum at Hampden

Come join us in snowy Siberia, war-torn Ukraine, gypsy Balkans, WTF Azerbaijan, and freezing Sweden. You know you want to...

:D

I liked the CWC back in the day. Problem now is most Cup Winners from the big(ger) countries already qualified for the CL.

Don't see any buzz in this tournament

I figure it will be something like the Intertoto Cup, but from my memory the Intertoto Cup was quick summer pre-season competition with multiple winners, no trophy involved the winners enter the old UEFA Cup. Also the tournament was invitational, many sides from the top leagues turned it down

The rumor in the past was making some regional competitions post-winter, for example most EE sides are eliminated in the qualifying rounds/group stages barring the Ukrainian/Russian sides so they would stay in Europe and play each other in a separate spring competition where the winner would get a CL spot, that could be something interesting if you're a fan of teams from this region
