Vaive was born in the USA and has dual citizenship I believe.
There seems to be a lot of confirmations now, can anyone put together a true team list? How accurate can you get?:help:

Hmm, Sauve making the team is a shock. If they were going to pick a 1990 defenceman, Pietrangelo would have been the more obvioius choice. And from the very little I've seen of both players and the stats they've put up, IMO they picked the wrong player.

That being said, at first blush this looks like one of the more talented squads Canada has sent to the World Under-18s. They key, as usual, will be to develop some chemistry so they can play up to their potential.

Team Canada looks great but they will have to bring their 'A' game because team USA seems to have superior size and chemistry (since most play on the developmental teams).

Should be an exciting touney, I just wish it was better televised.

I too am really surprised by Sauve making the team over Pietrangelo.

Pietrangelo was named to the team initially but has been replaced because of a nagging knee injury. He actually missed the first game of Mississauga's series against Sudbury and played the remaining four games injured. Sauve's a good player but Pietrangelo is the best 90' defenseman in the world in my opinion. He'll be a top 3pick in next year's draft and has a good shot of making Canada's WJC team.

I am happy that 4 québécois made the team. I wish that Maxime Tanguay would take part of the team but I'm glad nevertheless.

Yann Sauvé may surprise some guys here but he's the real deal, he's always giving his 100% during important games, i'm proud to have him in the team.

Keven Veilleux will be a key player with team canada. He performed great during playoff in Victoriaville. Some guys here call him soft, watch how he hits when the game is important.

Angelo Esposito has to perform, it is a great motivation for him and he cant miss his chance to prouve he can be part of a winning team. Must play harder and try to use team-mates.

Oliver Fortier is really a team guy. I am glad he's there. He plays so well under pressure. He'll be the one to watch because he'll rise his rank with this tourney

Makes a bit more sense.

I'm looking forward to watching more of Doughty, I've only seen him once, and that was in the U-20 training camp and I was shocked he didn't make the team, he was definetly the best defenseman at the camp.

16 Yves Bastien - 5'10 171 08/02/1989 Peterborough Petes/OHL

This is the only forward I didn't guess (I had Allard in there). I guess Bastien has more to his game than I thought. Can anyone tell me about how he plays?

Outstanding skater who played on u-18 team last summer. Won't contribute much offensively but is a reliable defensive player, strong face-off man and very good penalty killer. He's a guy who can accept a role on the third or fourth line, could be used in a shut down role, and can also contribute some offense. A solid all around player who was a key figure in the Steve Downie to Kitchener trade.

Thanks cdnhky1. That was a very informative post. I'll watch Bastien with interest.

Pietrangelo has been invited as has Stamkos. This is going to be a very explosive team with a solid defense and very good goaltending from Cann. A definite gold medal contender.

Looks like I was right........but hey, they still brought in a 1990 born D-man in Sauve. Kind of surprises me a bit, as there are a few very capable 1989 born D-man who were available. Would have liked to see Hickey this time.

Overall though, Canada looks to be pretty strong, not their best, but still a very strong team. Forwards look good, although it would have been nice to see Tavares(even though he is an underage) and a few others like MacMillan, Sonne and Cameron. It will be interesting to see how Stamkos performs?

I don't think the '89 age group is as strong as the '85's overall when they won gold at the IIHF U18 a few years back, but they should be gold medal contenders regardless. The 85's were so strong and deep and like this group, had a bunch of returnees from the summer U18 tourney. Canada has a goalie, 5 D-men and 8 forwards back from the gold medal winning team at the August U18 Junior World Cup. Should be fun and I'm looking forward to the tourney!

. . .
Perhaps I misunderstand you, but Hickey is not available as Seattle is still in the playoffs. I would have enjoyed the chance to see him too.

Good job predicting Bastien!

Yeah, no, I realize Hickey is still in the playoffs with Seattle and is not available......I was hoping they would lose to Tri-Cities, but that didn't happen. Canada's D is in great shape with 5 of 7 players back from the August gold medal team.

Sauve is a monster in defence... If he was playing with a contending team, he would be the rookie of the year, behind Voracek.

I hope so.......he was sure highly touted to begin the year and then it seemed throughout the year he wasn't really doing much. I guess it's tough being a 16yr old rook on a crap team. I imagine he will be the 7th D-man anyways at this tourney.
