Anybody got a list or an idea of who will be named to Team Canada for the U18 Junior World Cup in August? This tourney is for 1989 born players(or younger). Canada should have a strong squad again this year. Led by Jonathan Toews and Zack Hamill, Canada cruised to the Gold Medal last year.

Toews, will not play as he has played in the U20 before.
I imagine Tavares, Esposito, Gillies, Couture, Grant, Hamill, Doughty, Katic, Torquato, and
Gagner to get invites.

Hamill won't play, he's a late '88.

I know Toews will not play, as I stated in my post, this year's tournament is for 1989 born players or younger. Toews is a 1988 born, as is Zach Hamill.

After his playoff performance, Kurtis Mucha deserves a long look for goalie too.

I would guess two of these 6 goalies will make up the U18 goaltending tandem for Team Canada. So yes, Mucha will get a long look. Leclerc will be there as well. I am surprised Tyson Sexsmith was not named to this camp, so I guess he will not be considered for the U18 Junior World Cup.

Sexsmith should be there. I'm not sure I would have invited any of the OHL goalies let alone 3. Cann was good with Peterborough, the top team in the OHL this season, but really struggled at the u-17 with the top players his age. Borden was just ok with Kingston and didn't have a great u-17 with limited playing time. Jake Fischer is the one I really can't understand. He played just 15 games for Windsor this season with a 4.90 gaa and .867 save percentage. With most OHL teams Fishcer would not have even been in the league last season but Windsor had no depth in goal and had to use him. I'm surprised that neither of the two Quebec goalies who led their team to gold at the u-17 were inivited, Riopel and D'Orso.

Overall a pretty good list but there are some players there that I can't see getting invited to the camp. Syvret was a healthy scratch for most of London's playoff games and wasn't one of the top dmen for Ontario at u-17. Brendan Smith is a guy I think will make the final roster for Canada. Up front there is no way Pelech gets an invite. He was sent down to Jr. B during the season by Kitchener because he struggled to play in the OHL and his skating is suspect and definitely not suited to the international game. I really like Brian Cameron and think he'll make the final roster and was really impressed with Stinzani at the u-17. He's a tremendous skater and ideally suited for the international game. Mitchell also struggles in the skating department and is much better suited to the major junior game than international competition.

Looking at the coaching....

and with Clouston and Truitt being there I wouldn't be suprised at all to see John Negrin, Dustin Sylvester and Luke Schenn be named to the team.

Fischer is a very, very good goalie. His stats are bad because it seemed the team didn't play very well for him. However their were games where he stood on his head and held his team in it. If Gaudagnolo isn't back he should be the starter for a young Windsor team. He will most likely be drafted next year. Big, quick and will grow more.

Schenn and Hickey are the two best 89 dmen in the WHL I think, I would guess they will both make the team and play big minutes. What about Alex Plante? From the limited vieiwings I've had of him he looks good, even though he's still learning how to move his huge frame well. Surprised no one has mentioned him yet, at least. I'm not really too surprised about Sexsmith not getting an invite, he really didn't impress me in the few games he played with the Giants this year. Everything looked a little bit forced and too much fighting the puck. Hard to say when he gets so little time though, with long breaks between his games.

No Tyson Sexsmith?

Did Sexsmith even play this year? I do believe he has great potential but how do you invite a guy that hardly played and was hurt most of the year?

Sexsmith played a bit this year (11g), plus at the U17s after Christmas, but in Vancouver I was never impressed by him. He seemed to almost attack the puck rather than letting it hit him, and never quite looked comfortable or relaxed in goal. I'm not surprised he wasn't invited, really.

As stated already, Sexsmith was hurt for most of '05/06. He is still the goalie of the future for the Giants and there is no reason why he shouldn't be there for Canada in future tournaments if he continues to develop. His injury this year and the fact he didn't get much playing time because of Dustin Slade hurt his chances for the U18 camp. If the Giants continue with Slade this upcoming season I don't see Sexsmith getting alot of playing time again. Perhaps a great camp and a good start to the season and he can win the #1 job and the Giants trade Slade?

Based on the selection camp rosters and the buzz surrounding the camp here is my updated projection of Team Canada's U-18 roster. A couple tough cuts for me to make as always. I think this team would fare great. Goaltending could be a question mark.
