Delay to college hockey season will be announced soon, but officials optimistic one will be played

Written By: Brad Elliott Schlossman | Sep 9th 2020 - 1pm.

... The National Collegiate Hockey Conference is one of multiple leagues preparing to officially announce a delay to the start of the college hockey season because of the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic. An announcement, which has long been expected, will likely be delivered within a week, according to two sources.

It's unclear whether the announcement will include a new targeted start date. But behind the scenes, college hockey leaders are increasingly optimistic about holding a 2020-21 season and are continuing to work toward a mid-to-late November start, aligning the hockey season with college basketball's season. ...

Some interesting hearsay about B1G men's hockey scheduling scenarios in a Wisconsin State Journal article from about 10 days ago. This was before the HCA's announcement above, and before the Wisconsin men's team training activities were paused for 2 weeks due to positive COVID tests. But the scheduling approaches described below would seem to retain credibility.
... (S)ome around the Big Ten men’s hockey league are expecting to have more clarity on their seasons by the middle of September, according to sources.

While the idea of playing conference games inside a bubble has been floated recently in the larger college men’s hockey leagues, the Big Ten has been talking about the concept for months.

One idea discussed, according to sources, was for each of the seven Big Ten teams to play eight to 10 games over two to three weeks at one location. Notre Dame’s Compton Family Ice Arena checks a lot of boxes because it has two rinks, is in a central location for the league and has hotels nearby.

Teams could play games in the bubble that would eliminate their longer road trips later in the season. Concern about athletes being off campus for a long stretch has been muted by the move to online classes at schools.

Some Big Ten coaches, however, are reluctant to commit to a bubble before knowing that playing on their own campuses, potentially with a limited number of fans in buildings, isn’t feasible. ...

Among other possible schedule alterations, according to Big Ten sources, is going heavy on games that require as little travel as possible. That could lead to more contests between UW and Minnesota and between Michigan and Michigan State, for example. ...

Must be nice to have that kind of money to put up a bunch of teams in hotels for 2-3 weeks.
According to this 2018/2019 Cleveland.com report, the financials of Big 10 sports programs (7 of which include the B1G men's hockey teams) could be considered staggering. Even the leftovers for hockey after football & basketball expenditures have gotta be substantial. I wouldn't expect a lotta "bubble beds" will be booked at the Econolodge.

ECAC Planning 2 Division Format For Shortened Season

CHN Staff Report

The ECAC is planning to split the league into two division, with no crossover games until the ECAC Championship, it was revealed in a memo obtained by CHN.

The teams will be split into the New York (Clarkson, Colgate, Cornell, RPI, St. Lawrence, Union) and New England (Brown, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, Quinnipiac, Yale) Divisions. The season will consist of a 20-game schedule, with each team playing other division opponents four times each, with games starting Jan. 2. ...

The split divisions make travel easier, especially because many schools may still have travel restrictions for their athletic teams. For example, they may not allow overnight trips. ECAC games may be played home-and-home with one team in the pair coming and going home the same day each night.

It's still possible other teams in the ECAC will have non-league games prior to the league schedules starting, but nothing has been officially scheduled at this time. ...

SUNYAC cancels winter sports, including hockey, for 2020-21 season

By USCHO Staff
October 19, 2020

The SUNYAC announced Monday that men’s hockey will not be played this season.

A statement reads as follows:

In an abundance of caution to protect the health and safety of students and staff, after consultation with conference leadership, the presidents of the State University of New York Athletic Conference have made the difficult decision to cancel winter sports.

“This was not an easy decision and I empathize with all of our student-athletes across the SUNYAC,” Erik Bitterbaum, the chair of the SUNYAC Presidents said. “However, despite our best efforts to plan for a winter season, our priority must be the health and safety of everyone involved with intercollegiate athletics, and our campuses as a whole.” ...
