U-20 tournament, Austria

Good game from the Danish team against Austria yesterday. There are still a lot of things that needs to be adjusted, but the young Danes clearly dominated the game. Specially strong game from Nikolaj Krag-Christensen and Jonas Røndbjerg who had 3 points each in the 4-0 victory.

The lines for today's game against Latvia have few changes compared to yesterday:

First line: Oliver Gatz, Oliver Larsen – Rasmus T. Andersson, Nikolaj Krag-Christensen, Jonas Røndbjerg
Second line: Mathias Røndbjerg, Christian Mieritz – Magnus Molge, Frederik Høeg, Jeppe Jul Korsgaard
Third line: Anders Koch, Mikkel Svensson – William Boysen, David Madsen, Niklas Andersen
Forth line: Rasmus Heine, Jakob Jessen – Sebastian Ruders, Sebastian Brinkman, Oliver Anker Christensen
Extra forward: Tobias Ladehoff
Goaltender: Emil Gransøe with Kasper Krog as back-up

Ã…[NHL][/NHL]We dont seem less talented overall also when you think about how our most important offensive weapons are playing their 2nd tournament. im excited but keeping my expectations low and just hoping for a good fight and some good showings against the big teams.

What was so delightful about these two previous teams in this tournament was this almost blind and deaf attitude to the whole being humble and being the smaller team thing.
Especially last years team where it was a more collective thing

They just had the same attitude against everybody and i hope we will get the same energy again. If we get the same speed, passion and fight, i can live with a relegation.. World Jrs is the top 10 so every game is a blessing..

The swiss and the czechs are the targets...and maybe we can take a point of either finland or Sweden.

But a small thing like a string of bad luck in the beginning can smatter the confidence needed.

So how would you guys consider the Danish U20 team this year? Eller still coach?
Denmark to beat Switzerland for the third time in a row perhaps? :sarcasm:

That would be ideal, yes. But as others point out, as long as they perform, fighting their hears out and sell themselves expensive I would be satisfied. If that results in a win against Switzerland and perhaps Czech, then by all means, let it be so.

Overall I think the Danish team is better this year than the last year and has way more depth than the year Ehlers and Bjorkstrand was there, but of course lack the top end talent of those two.

There is an article on the IIHF homepage about the Danish U20 national team, and about youth development in Denmark in general. It is mostly based on an interview with U20 coach Olaf Eller.

You can find it here

Last night in the 2nd last pre-tournament game before the WJC, Denmark played Russia and it ended with a 1-2 OT loss. According to commentaries it was a pretty even game what the shots also underlines: (4-11)(8-13)(8-3)(2-2) total 22-29. Only the last few minutes of the first period was the Danish team under pressure and the Russian team went from (4-4) in shots to (4-11).
A very solid performance from the Danish team all around, and actually should a better executed Danish PP in the OT have given them the victory.

The Danish lines were:

GK: Lasse Munk Petersen
Back-up: Kasper Krog

Nicolai Weichel - Oliver Gatz
Rasmus T. Andersson - Alexander True - Frederik Høeg

Oliver Larsen - Christian Mieritz
Jonas Røndbjerg - Nikolaj Krag - Joachim Blichfeld

Mathias Røndbjerg - Anders Koch
Niklas Andersen - David Madsen - William Boysen

Jakob Jessen - Morten Jensen
Jeppe Jul Korsgaard - Christian Wejse-Mathiasen - Tobias Ladehoff

Daniel Nielsen - Kristoffer Søgaard

Is it too early to get super exited abut this team? :yo:

Denmark takes the bronze medal this year

Even if they ended up losing in OT, that's pretty impressive nonetheless that they were seemingly only outplayed for half a period!
So lets really hope they can surprise positively and steal a/some point(s) against the established teams.

They said that the "value" on the danish market didnt warrant the price.....Which might well be the case, but I doubt that the endless streams of badminton or handball that is being shown is that much cheaper.

I think its really sad that they never want to prioritize icehockey, even though its basically 2 international tournaments a year that we are asking for.
Its so frustrating to always be the black sheep that nobody in the media landscape cares about.

I will try to catch streams...but thanks for the information about swedish tv...Will do that if I cant find anything in english...My swedish is basically non existent(born in wrong part of the country:laugh:)

Well, it seems to be last chance to give an evaluation of the Danish team before start of tournament, so let me make a short one.

Goal-tending:
We will have a good goaltender in Lasse Petersen who is playing at a high junior level in the WHL. When he is at his best he is not far from Thomas Lillie in level, but he will need to be excellent in the key-games, if we are going to have a chance.

Defenders:
The defence is really solid this year. Normally it is the Achilles heel of the Danish U20 team, but this time it could be the best we have ever had, not least in terms of depth. Every defender has a lot of experience at a high level and is used to play important games, and 4 of them also participated at the WJC last year.
We may be short of a very offensive defender, but they are all very capable at their own end, and they have all a decent size.

Forwards:
We will be missing our best forward Mathias From at least in the first game against Sweden, and we don't have a star like Nicolaj Ehlers this year, but apart from that, it is a very capable crop of forwards we will see at this WJC. There will be 7 players returning from last year's tournament, and the rest are all solid players. The first two lines are strong in a Danish context, and the two bottom lines will both have good shot-down capabilities.

A lot can happen in a short tournament like this and sometimes a little puck-luck can change the important games, but I firmly believe that we once again will have a chance to avoid relegation if we manage to follow our game-plan, and avoid too many personal mistakes.
Our closest competitors; Latvia and Switzerland have strong teams this year as well, so it can end in both defeat and glory, but I'll cross my fingers hand hope for the best.

Great game last night.

I was very impressed with our blueliners. I think all of them raised to a level we really havent seen before for a Danish junior team. Keeping the personal errors to a bare minimum.

The forwards also did a fantastic job at keeping the Finnish players on the outside throughout the game.

You can argue that it might not be the most entertaining style of play, but we know our limits and our strenghts, extremely hardworking all of them. I hope there are scouts out there that still values work ethics and can see the value of it.

Blichfeld looks so confident with the puck out there, I really havent noticed him before on this level, but Sharks might have an unpolished 7th rounder gem here.
