I don’t care about him becoming an impact player anymore. I just want a two-way, third line winger who can chip in 30 points a season. Fine, call that a bust, but I still call it a valuable NHLer. He’s not even at that level right now. Let’s hope for rapid improvement.

He's on pace for 28 points in 78 games right now. 31 over the course of 82 games.

I actually think Jost is being a bit underrated here... his speed and size are certainly issues, but he is solid defensively, has a solid shot and good hands. A big issue is the roles he is being asked to play this season. He isn't a center, and he isn't a driver. He just isn't naturally talented enough to fill those roles, especially now. Right now I think he needs to be a 3rd wheel on a 3rd line where he is only really asked to play solid defense and find the soft spots in the offensive zone. IMO I'd pair him with Soda and Calvert to try to clean up that line. See if he can get find a role playing clean up from them. If he can pull that off, they you'd try to build him into a supporting 2nd line wing. Where you have a good #2C that can drive the play offensively and a speedy wing on the other side to help the forecheck. I think that is a role he can be successful in.

One thing I absolutely think he needs.... he needs to slim down to get every little bit of speed that he can. In today's NHL you can be a 5'11" 175lbs player if you are speedy and strong on your skates,I'm not sure you can be a 5'11" 185-190lbs player with average or below average skating. At least an impactful one.

If they're trying to make the playoffs then that's all the more reason to send him down because he's not doing them a damn bit of good where he currently is. I get that injuries make everything that much more complicated but it's not helping him or the team by having him continue to do absolutely nothing at the NHL level.

The talent level and impact ability are all there for Jost. He's one of the most talented players on the team. If you compare him to another tweener type in Andrighetto, Jost is more talented, has better puck skills when stick handling, has a better shot, better passing ability, and better vision. He just doesn't have Ghetto's wheels.

The only thing keeping Jost from displaying his talent regularly is his acceleration. Though he's been better in this area I think the last week or two. If he manages to keep improving that acceleration, you're going to start seeing him execute a lot more plays, and showing off that talent a lot more than he's not right now.

All the times he looks to make plays but gets closed off on in the O zone, all the times the defender knocks him off the puck, all the times he's turned the puck over in the neutral zone, all the times the passes haven't quite connected, all the times he hasn't quite found himself in the best scoring areas on the ice, all the times the rebound just missed him in the scoring area, are direct results of that core skating issue.

He's not creating enough space for himself to make plays when he has the puck, and he's not in the spots on the ice where the puck is going to be when he's waiting to receive passes.

If he can't continue to improve his acceleration he'll probably spend his career as a tweener type that leaves you a little disappointed. If he can though, I think he'll be a really good 2nd liner, and I'm not writing off his center ability either. As long as he can skate well, and has some talented help on his line, he has the tools to play that role as well.

I'm suspicious of that since he can't win puck battles and gets ragdolled already. That'd be a good idea to slim down if he'd become a fast, agile skater who could skate away from trouble...but that won't be the case. Losing 10lb would make him very marginally faster and give him even more trouble along the board.

Nah..in fact I'd go the opposite way. Since he's small and will always be slow he needs to get stronger so he can use his low center of gravity to his advantage to win battles and get in front of the net. That could work. Maybe.

You can be strong on your skates, win puck battles, and slim... I keep using this example, but Brayden Point. He is a tiny center, but is smart, tenacious, and is a fantastic skater... that allows him to play at a very, very high level despite his smaller stature. Jost adding 10 pounds or more is going to take him from average (at best) skater to a terrible skater. He simply doesn't have the skating to support more weight. Slim down and focus on pick up any quickness possible. It might hurt him against some of the bigger defenders, but could get him involved with the play more often. That would at least be the idea.

But Jost isn't 10 pounds away from skating like Point, that's what I'm trying to say. Avs management asked him to bulk up last summer IIRC, we'll see what's happening next.

Oh I know he isn't, but that extra step he might gain would put him in the play more often. At least in the soft spots were he is simply a touch off consistently. A step worse from bulking up I think is the exact wrong direction. And I know the Avs would ask that, I think they are wrong. They asked the same of Girard too. In Girard's case, there was plenty of good skating there to add the weight. With Jost, I see a kid that has trouble keeping up now and I'd hate to see him be any slower. If they push that path in his development, I think he is going to flounder into a change of scenery trade.

He doesn't need to slim down. He just needs to change his focus in the off-season from putting on bulk, to working more on explosive leg strength.

Jost doesn't need to lose the bulk, he just needs to grow into his man strength and continue improving his acceleration. This takes time. He will lean out in the areas needed, and maintain the strength in the other areas needed during the training.

Look at how Mikko improved last off season. He got much quicker but did he lose bulk? No he actually is stronger on his skates, and handles physical play much better as well. It was just a slight change in the off season approach. Doing similar off ice drills on the track and other places, but just focusing on doing them more, and really targeting the muscles needed for acceleration.

Jost had to improve both strength and acceleration before making the NHL, and you can't focus on both in one off season. That's why everyone refers to this as a process.

Are we sure the Avs told him to bulk up this offseason? Bednar flat-out said either at camp or the beginning of the season that the organization told him he was too slow last year. I thought the emphasis was on his core strength (if he worked with Andy O'Brien then it definitely was) and his acceleration. And even then dude looks like Kyle effin' Chipchura right now.

Other than that bad shift where he had 2 turnovers I thought he did alright and deserves to stay in the NHL. If you're expecting him to be a scorer this season it's not going to happen, his offensive game just isn't there yet. I see the potential there, I think he can be an O'Reilly-lite but it's probably going to take another 2 seasons before he really establishes himself. If people don't want to wait for that, I get that, but I think there are going to be some people eating crow on this one in a few seasons.
I absolutely agree but I still think it would be good for his development to play a few games in the AHL. Just to calm down and kinda reset the computer.

Jost had a couple of shifts last night that were some of the best I’ve ever seen with him. What’s crazy though is that in those shifts he still didn’t look like much of an impact NHL player.

Jost seems like a good kid and all but I think he’s basically going to have to become an entirely different player to become what we hoped. It’s not like he needs to work on one thing.

I keep looking at guys like Butcher and Debrincat and wonder why Jost can't get at least up to their level. They too are small-and-not-fast guys. Are Jost's skating issues that much more pronounced than those other two?

Butcher is basically a PP specialist and has is issues ES, but yeah Jost's burst is bad. I've said it over and over for a while that his skating simply isn't good enough to be a NHL center. I do think it can work on wing still, but he needs to be a 3rd wheel, clean up guy. Not a driver or the primary forechecker.

I wasn't that high on Jost but I believed he could be ~50pt 2nd line winger.

It's not looking good but he is just 20. He has many development years left. He could easily still become good mid six player which is a little disappointing if we look at his draft position but still a useful player.

He needs confidence, training, experience and time. AHL could be good for him, I don't know.

I think sending him to the Eagles won’t do much. I can’t imagine his confidence is very high right now, sending him down will crush it even more. I mean he could build it back up down there, but I think the damage has been done.

We should try it at least. Maybe it works although it's so late. I don't think it can do much harm because (at least it looks like) his confidence has completely vanished anyway.

We need to be patient with him. Everyone compares him to Compher and Kerfoot but forget those guys are actually older than MacKinnon. Jost is the only true "young guy" on the team, Compher and Kerfoot were still playing college when they were Jost's age.

While I agree in theory... if you don't possess NHL level skating at his age, it is pretty unlikely to appear a year or two down the line. Not impossible, but pretty unlikely.

FTR I don't think the Avs will pull the plug unless he is floundering at a similar level next January.

Yeah but both those guys possess a skill that stands out. Nothing sticks out about Jost which is a serious issue.

As much as I love Jost the person, I think it's pretty clear he should've done another year at college, and then maybe half a season in the A.
They made Mikko play an entire season more or less in the AHL. He dominated in San Antonio and brought that show to the NHL. I really really want to know who thought it was a good idea to bring Tyson from College straight into the NHL. It was obvious last season that he needed more time and way more obvious now. They did it right with Mikko and now with Kaut but I think they f***ed things up needlessly with Jost. At this point though if we send him to the AHL it might totally destroy his confidence so I don't even know if that's the right move. The Oilers are doing something similar with PoolParty.

The Avs might have rushed Jost because we were having the worst season imaginable and the arrival of top 10 pick Jost was something that the fans could get behind. Or maybe the Avs are in love with Tyson as a person and treat him differently than other prospects.

Jost sent to eagles. 6 weeks too late. Hopefully he figures his game out and doesn't get discouraged.
