Barrie was thought to be all offence, no defence prior to 2009-10. But, a funny thing happened, Tyler Myers, his defence partner, graduated, and Barrie suddenly, out of necessity developed a two-way game. He'll probably never be a real defensive specialist, but his defence is now good enough that he's not a liability. Unfortunately for him, his pre-09-10 reputation preceded him, and he was somehow not even invited to Canada's World Junior camp last fall. The Rockets coaches and brass were absolutely astounded, as they were counting on not having either McMillan or Barrie for the duration of the WJCs. That's not a mistake Hockey Canada will likely make again, now that Barrie has been recognized. 72 points as a defenceman are nothing to sneeze at!

Any Kelowna fans who can comment on his play? Why did he fall to the third round last year? What are his strengths and weaknesses? Also do you think he'll be back in the WHL next year or will he go pro with the Avs?

What a draft 2009 is turning out to be for the Avs.

Matt Duchene
Ryan O'Reilly
Stefan Elliott
Tyson Barrie

Yeah and Elliott had a much better season IMO.

More goals a better +/- albeit on a better team.

To be honest the award should have gone to Vancouver Giant - Kevin Connauton.

tied for most points, 2nd in goals, 1st in PP goals, 1st in PP goals by a d-man.

He was dominant on the PP, teams had to change their setups against the Giants because of his dominance. NOt to mention he had 107 PIMS, with quite a few fighting majors.

Not to take away from Barrie who is an excellent puck mover, but I dont think he was the best WHL d-man this year.

Kelowna season ticket holder. Im not so sure he should have won. He had a bit of a slow start, lots of turnovers and just bad dumb plays early in the year, but as the season progressed and after he played in that Russia vs CHL type series, he really seemed to improve and get smarter and better. He is a bit small but pretty quick and a very good passer.

I would be shocked if he is not back in Kelowna next year. He still makes too many mistakes and is kinda small. That said I didnt think Toronto should have kept Schenn 2 years ago and was a bit suprised Myers stepped in as well has he did this year but Barrie is not even close to where those 2 were at that age. He will barely be 19 when the season starts I would highly doubt he will make the Avs. (Dont think he can play in AHL).

Kelowna should have a very good team next year if they can get a goalie, only losing the overagers and perhaps Brandon McMillan, it would be well served to keep him in junior at least 1 more year.

Avs are unlikely to keep him next year as they have Gaunce, Shattenkirk, Cohen, and likely Holos all joining the pro ranks. Only Shatty really has a chance at the NHL (IMO) the rest are targeted for Lake Erie. Barrie will almost certainly return to work on his game.

Uh... dude, Connauton played just like Barrie used to play when he was paired with Myers. You need to play both sides of the puck - Connauton thought he was the second coming of Mike Green out there.

I can't count the number of times I cursed him making stupid decisions in his d-zone. His numbers are gaudy, but he's a long way from Dub d-man of the year.

If Barrie were about 2 inches taller he'd be a bluechip prospect. As it is, not much chance of making the jump right away, but he's got to be a lock for the WJC next winter.
