Belmont (New York):
  • Race 6: What an awesome finish between Joel Rosario and Javier Castellano the latter who was far back, closed on the outside and for a split second took the lead inches prior to the wire. After a lengthy review, the inside horse did get his nose down and recovered to win. The winner paid $22.80 and came in off a 20-month layoff. Just a splendid finish.
BEL_20181004_6_1.jpg
  • Race 7: A horse with slightly more than a one year layoff won.
  • Race 8: Joel Rosario won and again on the rail.
  • Race 9: Eric Cancel picked up the mount for Chris DeCarlo and won for trainer Timothy Hills.
Finger Lakes (New York):
  • Race 4: The $2 Pick 4 paid $56,085.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Jeremy Rose was 3 2-1-0 today. Very nice. :)
  • Race 6: The $1 super paid $16,000
  • Race 7: The $2 Pick 5 paid over $30,000.
  • Race 8: The $2 Pick 4 paid over $38,000. This was the lone race of eight in which the favorite was the winner.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Pick 6: The sequence was so difficult that it paid out to those who won three (or 50%) races.
  • Race 1: Creepy the Crab, I have faith in you. A second place finish today. Now 25 0-2-3.
  • Race 3: Trevor McCarthy was dismounted mid-race and nearly ended on Jevian Toledo's mount. A very odd event.

  • Race 6: The second and third place horses bumped in the stretch and somehow the eventual winner bounced and caught the lead horse for the win. Another strange one today.
  • Race 7: The $2 Pick 3 paid over $3,600.
  • Race 8: A serious bump in the stretch which led to a horse nearly nosing the surface. That kind of day at Laurel. The winner paid $79.80. The $1 super paid over $156,040. The $2 tri was more than $16,000. The $2 exacta was more than $1,300. Place prices were $30.60 and $31.60. Show prices were $17.60, $1640 and $8.20.

Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • Miguel Vasquez and Samy Camacho lead the meet with three wins. Some jockeys may not feel as comfortable with the surroundings here compared to other tracks especially Gulfstream. It may benefit handicappers to go with riders who have won.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Flavien Prat won three times on three straight starts.

Mike Smith rides once at Santa Anita tomorrow (Friday) before heading to Keeneland for Saturday's big day. What is interesting, his solo mount has never run in the US. Sired by Animal Kingdom in Australia, the Neil Drysdale-trained filly has run three times all in her home county. Maybe Smith knows something.

The latest possible runners for the Breeders' Cup Classic (analysis by Jay Privman, DRF).

Breeders' Cup Classic, $6 million, 1 1/4 miles, 3-year-olds and up

HORSE TRAINER LAST 3 BEYERS ODDS LAST RACE NEXT RACE COMMENTS
Accelerate John Sadler 100-115-111 7-2 Awesome Again, SA, 1st BC Classic, Nov. 3 Didn't have the easiest of trips, prevailed anyway, won't get away with that next time
West Coast Bob Baffert 96-NA-117 5-1 Awesome Again, SA, 2nd BC Classic, Nov. 3 Needed last badly, look for him to improve significantly when it matters most
Catholic Boy Jonathan Thomas 104-99-96 8-1 Travers, SAR, 1st BC Classic, Nov. 3 Showed he can beat 3yo G1 dirt runners in Travers. Now must face elders
McKinzie Bob Baffert 107-101-98 8-1 Pa. Derby, PARX, 1st BC Classic, Nov. 3 Came back better than he left, with career-best fig. Always well regarded
Mind Your Biscuits Chad Summers 108-104-109 8-1 Lukas Classic, CD, 1st BC Classic/Dirt Mile, Nov. 3 Versatile and talented, he's earned a shot at taking on the best in Classic IMO
Mendelssohn Aidan O'Brien 100-99-90 10-1 JC Gold Cup, BEL, 3rd BC Classic, Nov. 3 Chased a scalding pace and held on well, but figs still a bit light to beat these
Thunder Snow Saeed bin Suroor 103-NA-NA 10-1 JC Gold Cup, BEL, 2nd BC Classic, Nov. 3 Tough to get a line on him. Believe he needs lead for best, CD experience was a disaster
Diversify Rick Violette 96-110-110 12-1 JC Gold Cup, BEL, 5th BC Classic, Nov. 3 Went way too fast for his own good; willing to give him a mulligan to stay in top 10
Yoshida Bill Mott 102-96-NA 15-1 Woodward, SAR, 1st BC Classic, Nov. 3 Made successful transition to dirt, but question overall quality of Woodward field
Pavel Doug O'Neill 98-101-97 20-1 Pacific Classic, DMR, 2nd BC Classic, Nov. 3 Among the many in this Classic who are bypassing a final prep, training into race

Belmont (New York):
  • Party time: Two handicappers connected with the $2 Pick 6 for over $197,000.
  • The handle: New York handled over $8,000,000.
  • Race 1: David Cohen went gate-to-wire.
  • Race 9: My goodness. For a split second... Mike Luzzi was on board an 89-to-1 shot that didn't want to stop. When 3-year-old filly looked spent after trying to wire the field, she rebounded and almost re-took the lead in the stretch. However, she finished fourth but no more than two lengths separated first and fourth and there was a photo for both second and third. An exhilarating finish especially for us bomb seekers. A tease perhaps but sometimes the thrill of the action exceeds the action itself.
  • Manny Franco won twice including his 1,000th victory. David Cohen and Irad Ortiz, Jr. also won twice.
  • Junior Alvarado's timing is not where it should be, perhaps still rusty from the recent spill and minor injury.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 8: The combo of Katie Davis/Lacey Gaudet prevailed. Gaudet is now 3-5-2 with her last 10 starters at the track. Being 100% in the money for a streak of 10 races is purdy good.
  • Chalk: Six favorites won the 10 races and only one victor paid more than $10.
Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • Samy Camacho and Miguel Vazquez each lead the meet with four wins.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Opener: Over 15,000 attended opening day. One of the country's best tracks.
  • Graphics: Just awful. White numbers with a light tan background? Terrible combo and it blends with the dirt surface when the camera is repositioned. Keeneland is too good of a track to have that production. The listing of the odds is also terrible, too crowded. This is not the opinion of one person. New York is bad, as is Kentucky Downs but Keeneland may be worse. Tracks likely don't want to be copycats but Laurel, Gulfstream, Philly, Santa Anita and many others are much better and easier on the eyes. Think of the handicapper!
  • Jockeys: Some of the star jockeys from other parts of the country were out but it was Edgar Morales and Robby Albarado who won multiple times.
  • Dale Romans was the lone trainer to win more than once (2). Romans, perhaps similar to last year, may have some good 2-year-old runners.
  • Prior stops: Of the 10 winners today, three ran previously at Saratoga, two at Churchill, one at Aqueduct, Kentucky Downs, Prairie Meadows, Remington and Monmouth.
  • Race 10: A bomber set the board afire. The 54-to-1 shot ridden by Edgar Morales paid $110.60. The $1 super was more than $53,000. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $28,000.
  • Race 9: Restless Rider (Brian Hernandez, Jr./Kenny McPeek) won the $400,000 Grade I Alcibides. The filly will be invited to the Breeders' Cup. She was sent off the favorite in the field of 14. The horse definitely figured but my bombers and others used picks didn't factor. The trainer won this race for the fourth time, and first since 2008.

  • Race 8: Promises Fulfilled (Luis Saez/Dale Romans) improved to 10 6-0-2 and advanced to the Breeders' Cup with the victory. The Grade 2 $250,000 Phoenix was reduced to a field of five but was entertaining nonetheless.

  • Race 3: Virginia Key (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) won coming in off a 6-month layoff from a Grade 2 at Aqueduct.
Santa Anita (California):
Mike Smith rides once at Santa Anita tomorrow (Friday) before heading to Keeneland for Saturday's big day. What is interesting, his solo mount has never run in the US. Sired by Animal Kingdom in Australia, the Neil Drysdale-trained filly has run three times all in her home county. Maybe Smith knows something.
  • Race 2: As noted above, Mike Smith riding this winless horse piqued my interest. He was sent off at a startling 6-to-1. He won, by a flared nostril, and the $1 exacta paid $156 with a bomber in place. A fantastic score.

A great day if racing is scheduled. The #11 in the Shadwell has my interest right now. He finished second in the Arlington Million. He could be primed with Castellano on board.

A marvelous yet frustrating day of racing. This is one for the archives. Bombs, high payouts, shockers, you name it.

Belmont (New York):
  • Chalk or no chalk? Seven favorites won the 11 races and yet the payouts were very high.
  • Race 1: The winner wired the field and paid $78. That set the tone for today.
  • Race 3: The $2 Pick 3 paid over $13,000. Junior Alvarado was dead last then finished with an incredible performance with a beautifully timed outcome.
  • Race 5: The $2 Pick 5 paid $134,536. One of the gutsiest wins and rides of the day when Junior Alvarado found a hole and cut inside a pair of horses. Not his usual style.
  • Race 8: Wow Cat (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) was as advertised in winning the $400,000 Grade I Beldame. The Chilean-bred won for the first time in three tries in the USA and now sports an 11 9-1-1 record (was 8-for-8 before trying the US).
  • Race 9: Have At It (David Cohen/Christophe Clement) won the Grade 2 $500,000 Hill Prince. An 11-to-1 and 21-to-1 combined for nearly a $400 $2 exacta.
  • Race 10: Complexity (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) romped in the Grade I $500,000 Champagne Stakes for 2-year-olds. Onto the Breeders' Cup.

  • Jose Ortiz won four times in 10 starts. He combined to win three times with Chad Brown.
  • Junior Alvarado won twice in eight starts, He seemed to be in a groove absent since his return from injury.
  • Leading Riders: Through today, the leaders are Manny Franco (21), Jose Ortiz (20), Irad Ortiz, Jr. (19) and Javier Castellano (18).
  • Handle: Approached $14,000,000.
Finger Lakes (New York):
  • Race 2: Straight Thunder, a 12-year-old gelding, was out for the 149th time.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Off the turf as was much of the mid-Atlantic.
  • Race 8: 7 of 10 entered were scratched.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Julien Pimental/Michael Trombetta combined to go a perfect 3 3-0-0. Each were in four races.
  • Race 7: Lacey Gaudet's streak in the money was halted with her favorite missing the board.
  • Race 8: Lacey Gaudet returned to the winner's circle and is now 4-5-2 with her last 12 starters at the track.
Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • Race 7: My Charming Clyde, an 11-year-old, was out for the 115th time.
  • Race 5: A rare 1 1/2 mile race with an extremely close finish.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Attendance: 24,000.
  • Shattered records: $619,106 All-Stakes Pick 5 (previous record $496,723 in 2016) $742,450 All-Stakes Pick 4 (previous record $479,166 in 2016)
  • Race 11: The $2 Pick 4 paid over $60,000. The $2 Pick 3 returned over $11,000.
  • Race 10: Next Shares (Tyler Gaffalione/Richard Baltas) received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup and improved to 20 5-4-2 with the win in the $1,000,000 Grade I Shadwell Turf Mile. Gaffalione did a nice job on board the winner, a very intuitive ride. The winner paid $48.80. The second place horse returned $58.60. The $2 exacta paid $1,968. The $2 tri paid over $15,000. The $1 super paid over $122,000. The $2 Pick 6 paid to those who hit four legs. The $2 Pick 5 paid a remarkable $526,134.60. The $2 Pick 4 paid over $77,000. The $2 Pick 3 paid over $8,900. The $2 double was $2,954.60.

  • Race 9: Knicks Go (Albin Jimenez/Ben Colebrook) stunned the masses when the 2-year-old Maryland-bred colt won the $500,000 Grade I Breeders' Futurity. The winner received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup. The trainer won a Grade I for the first time. The winner paid $142.00 and $50.40 to win and place, respectively. The exacta was $1,377.80. The tri was over $10,000. The $1 super was more than $27,000. The $2 Pick 3 paid over $3,300. Dream Maker (Julien Leparoux/Mark Casse), sent off the favorite, never ran and finished 12th in a field of 13.

  • Race 8: A Raving Beauty (John Velazquez/Chad Brown), bred in Germany, improved to 22 6-3-3 in winning the $400,000 Grade I First Lady. The winner received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup. Argentinian-bred Dona Bruja, my pick of the day, finished second at 13-to-1, from a morning line of 6-to-1.
  • Race 7: Golden Mischief (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) won the Grade 2 $250,000 Thoroughbred Club of America and improved to 21 10-3-0. The winner received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup.
  • Race 6: Bucchero (Fernando De La Cruz/Tim Glyshaw) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Woodford and improved to 30 11-6-3.
  • Leading riders: With two days in the book, Tyler Gaffalione, Edgar Morales, John Velazquez and Robby Albarado lead with two wins. Corey Lanerie, the leading rider at Churchill who generally excels in Kentucky, is cold at 16 0-1-2.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 11: The $.50 trifecta paid $1,151.15. The $2 double was $2,818.20. The $,50 Pick 3 paid over $1,500. The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $9,700. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $28,000. The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $71,000.
  • Race 10: The $.50 trifecta paid $991.90.
  • Race 9: Sharp Samurai (Gary Stevens/Mark Glatt) improved to 14 8-2-0 after winning the Grade 2 $200,000 City of Hope. The 4-year-old received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup.
  • Race 7: The $2 tri paid over $4,400. The $1 super paid over $15,000.
  • Race 5: Roy H. (Paco Lopez/Peter Miller) won the $300,000 Grade I Santa Anita Sprint Championship. The winner received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup. Lopez made a rare trip to California. The horse has earned over $1.8 million. The $2 Pick 5 paid over $23,000.
  • Race 4: Its Gonna Hurt (Tiago Pereira/Brian Koriner) advanced to the Breeders' Cup with an upset and paid $18.60. The $100,000 Speakeasy was a "Win and You're In" Breeders' Cup race and finished 1-2-3-4-5-6 in a 6-horse field.
  • Peter Miller entered seven races and finished first or second in six. In total, he was 9 2-5-0.
  • Paco Lopez made a rare visit to the track and finished 5 1-3-0.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 6: The $1 Pick 5 paid $234,042.
  • Race 7: The $1 Pick 4 paid over $13,000. The $1 super paid over $32,000.
Mark Casse
  • The trainer failed to hit the board with 10 starters across three tracks.

Belmont (New York):
  • The Servis Brothers stole part of the show. They do a bulk of their training in Philly and New Jersey but today they were among the stars of New York. Both won "Win and You're In" Breeders' Cup races.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode the card and finished 9 3-1-1.
  • Race 1: Mike Luzzi won the opener at 7-to-1.
  • Race 6: Uncle Benny (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Jason Servis) won the $150,000 Grade II Futurity. The winner ran previously at Monmouth. The winner received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup.
  • Race 7: Jaywalk (Joel Rosario/John Servis) won the $400,000 Grade I Frizette. The winner had run previously at Monmouth, Parx and Delaware. The winner received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup.
  • Race 8: Fourstar Crook (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) won the $500,000 Grade I Flower Bowl. An invitation to the Breeders' Cup was issued.
  • Race 9: Junior Alvarado wired the field.
  • Manny Franco (22), Irad Ortiz, Jr. (22) and Jose Ortiz (20) are the winningest riders at the meet.
Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Frankie Pennington was an incredible 6 5-1-0 winning for five different trainers. It was his second 5-win day this week.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 1: An incredible payout of $12,565 for the $2 trifecta.
  • Race 5: Off the turf led 12 of 15 entered to be scratched. The winner paid $2.40, no place or show results.
  • Race 8: Off the turf and 11 of 16 were scratched.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Race 9: Blue Prize (Joe Bravo/Ignacio Correas), an Argentinian-bred, won the Grade I $500,000 Spinster and improved to 16 7-7-1 including 6 4-1-0 in 2018. An invitation to the Breeders' Cup was issued. The trainer won a Grade I in North America for the first time. Calvin Borel's Champagne Problems finished second. Joe Bravo: Have Whip, Will Travel!

  • Race 8: Current (Jose Ortiz/Todd Pletcher) edged Henley's Joy (Tyler Gaffalione/Michael Maker) to win the $250,000 Dixiana Bourbon and received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup in the process. A terrific race, maybe the best of the day, only decided by a very lengthy review which led to Ortiz raising his arm in triumph in a rarely seen moment of jubilation.

  • Race 6: Strike Silver (Julien Leparoux/Mark Casse) won the $200,000 Indian Summer with a furious rally from the outside.. The 2-year-old colt is by Violence. As mentioned previously, keep an eye on his offspring. The winner received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup.

  • Winning tandem: Jose Ortiz-Todd Pletcher combined to go 4 3-0-1.
  • Julien Leparoux entered with one win at the meet, he now has three victories.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 5: Skye Diamonds (Tiago Pereira/Bill Spawr) won the Grade 3 $100,000 L.A. Woman.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 8: Avie's Flatter (Eurico Da Silva/Josie Carroll) won the $225,000 feature.
  • Mark Casse won three straight races in which he was entered and finished 10 3-0-1. He was cold yesterday.
Longchamp (France):
  • Breeders' Cup: Races with Breeders' Cup implications were held. Results were listed in the chart above.
  • Race 3: Did an exacta really pay over $11,000? A $138 winner topped the ticket
  • Race 7: A $96.20 winner.

The photo finish with Current beating Henley's Joy. There are losses and there are losses. This was a punctuation on a dazzling weekend of racing especially for Breeders' Cup races. We saw stars beaten, shocking upsets, favorites who ran well and an array of talent on display.

Belmont (New York):
  • Chad Brown has won 7 of the last 9 races in which he entered. He won all three races today -- each being a maiden special weight -- and finished 4 3-0-0 (he had two entered in one race).
  • Christophe Clement also won three races today. He finished 5 3-1-0.
  • Chad Brown (3), Christophe Clement (3) and Gary Contessa (2) combined to win eight of the ten races.
  • Race 9: Lonely Road (David Cohen/Christophe Clement) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Matron Stakes. It was an exciting finish, The #12 ran a superb race outside of a bad start and almost captured the win in her first start in the USA after six in France.

  • Race 3: Blacktype (Joel Rosario/Christophe Clement) played catch me if you can; they couldn't. Well done by Rosario and at 7-to-2 in the 7-year-old's 36th race and 12th win. He won the $200,000 Grade 2 Knickerbocker and became a millionaire in the process.
  • Bias: The rail was strong on the inner turf today.
Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Frankie Pennington won one of his two rides. He was named Jockey of the Week in North America for two 5-win days. Awesome for him and Parx to get recognized with such a prestigious honor and with so many high profile races and tracks ongoing this past weekend. The last five racing days, Pennington was 28 13-3-0.
  • Jamie Ness was a perfect 3 3-0-0 and he won with three different jockeys.
Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • Edgard Zayas won four times in eight starts and hit the board six times.
  • Carlo Vaccarezza won for the 100th time. Party at Frank and Dino's tonight in Boca Raton and on Columbus Day!

Santa Anita (California):
  • Dodgers and Lakers and Kings, Oh My! An interesting series of winners based on names of horses. A Dodger, Laker and King reference for Los Angeles' sports fans.
  • Race 4: Junior Gillam (Asa Espinoza/Jerry Hollendorfer) won. Named after the ex-baseball player.
  • Race 5: Lakerball (Mario Gutierrez/Doug O'Neill) won the $100,000 Surfer Girl. The winner was very playable and made experts of many after-the-fact. Those connections and a first-time rider change should have sent a signal in addition to the odds. The horse broke her maiden in her second career start, her first race under O'Neill and has now won two of four lifetime. Named after the basketball team. The $2 Pick 5 paid over $26,000.

  • Race 6: Kopitar (Asa Espinoza/Robert Hess) broke his maiden in his 12th attempt. Named after the hockey player.
  • Race 7: The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $1,300.
  • Race 8: King of Speed (Gary Stevens/Jeff Bonde) won the $100,000 Zuma Stakes for 2-year-olds.
  • Race 10: The $.50 Pick 6 paid over $31,000. One bettor came within a half-length of winning $500,000 but his pick finished second.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 7: The $1 Pick 4 was over $13,000.
  • Race 6: The $.20 Pick 5 paid over $10,000 or over $50,000 for a $1 bet.
Hastings (British Columbia):
  • Race 5: While the favorite ran off the board, a 4-to-1 and 41-to-1 topped a ticket that paid $269.30 in the Grade 3 $100,000 Ballerina.
  • Race 7: While the favorite finished dead last, a $1 super paid over $28,000 in the $100,000 Grade 3 Premier's Handicap.

1000 people showed up with spotlights to protest ads shown on Syndey Opera House for Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse. Government overuled Opera House officials forcing them to show ads for upcoming race. Betting was suspended during protest. Now I've seen everything.

^Did you see the competing groups looking to develop standardbreds near the TN border? Churchill-Keeneland are teaming for rights against a proposal led by Kentucky Downs.

The story with Stronach suing his daughter came out of left field.

» Stronach Family Rift Revealed in Bombshell Lawsuit

By Bill Finley & T. D. Thornton

A bitter and divisive power struggle that has been simmering behind the scenes for years within the Stronach family is about to boil over very publicly in a court of law.
Frank Stronach, the 86-year-old Canadian business titan who is renowned within the Thoroughbred industry as a breeder and owner of racehorses and for building North America’s largest conglomerate of racetracks, filed a bombshell lawsuit in a Toronto court Oct. 1 alleging that the daughter he appointed to run his empire, Belinda Stronach, has mismanaged the family’s chief assets and trust funds while forcing her father out of control of the fortune he created.

Belinda Stronach, 52, is the chairman and president of The Stronach Group (TSG), which operates, among numerous other holdings, Santa Anita Park, Golden Gate Fields, Gulfstream Park, Laurel Park, Pimlico Race Course and Portland Meadows. According to the lawsuit, she has also been a trustee of three family trusts and a beneficiary of one of them.

Alon Ossip, the chief executive of TSG, is named as a co-defendant. His role, according to the lawsuit, involves allegedly conspiring with Belinda Stronach in “a series of covert and unlawful actions…that have been contrary to the best interests of, and to the overwhelming detriment of, other members of the Stronach family.”

The 73-page lawsuit, which TDN obtained from the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, lists 39 demands for relief that Frank Stronach is seeking via court trial, including the removal of Belinda Stronach and Ossip from all corporate officer and trustee positions related to the Stronach empire.

According to the suit, Frank Stronach is also seeking three separate forms of financial redress:

• $250 million (CDN) in compensation to the plaintiffs, family trusts, and TSG entities for “all losses, damages or harm suffered as a result of the Defendants’ unlawful or oppressive conduct.”
• $250 million (CDN) in damages “against Belinda and Alon…for breach of fiduciary duty, breach of trust, and unlawful means of conspiracy.”
• $20 million (CDN) in “punitive, aggravated, and/or exemplary damages” against Belinda Stronach and Ossip.

Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $19,000.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • All the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" races have been concluded. The full list with results is in a post above.
  • Race 7: Concrete Rose (Jose Lezcano/George Arnold), with the second shortest price on the board, won a $200,000 race for 2-year old fillies with a Breeders' Cup bid awaiting. Johnny V./Todd Pletcher finished second at 13-to-1. Corey Lanerie came in third at 48-to-1 which could be the highlight of his tough meet to date (27 0-3-3).

CDI/Keeneland has already been supported by the mayor. Their political influence is, well, you already know how much weight they carry. There was supposedly a third interested party. Smells like extended court proceedings no matter the decision. It's still about setting up a racino property for the future if CDI is involved in my opinion and not about harness racing. KD is only trying to protect their interests in the area with their property improvements/expansion at KD.

Edit: oops wrong quote, sorry.

What Churchill is planning at Calder with a jai alai fronton has been painful for many in the racing industry. They have the backing of certain agencies. It has not been met with support from insiders as you could imagine. The casino a Calder is profitable and horse racing is there only as a county requirement with parimutuel wagering. That would be maintained with jai alai. In that capacity, if you are correct regarding harness in Kentucky perhaps akin to T-breds/jai alai at Calder, then the primary purpose is not the sport or growth thereof.

Belmont (New York):
  • Race 9: The $2 Pick 6 paid over $143,000. It was that type of day in New York.
  • Race 5: Junior Alvarado finished second in the prior two races before winning here. The $.50 Pick 4 returned over $5,500. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $166,725.75. An odd race -- excuse the pun -- in that the 1-3-5-7-9-11-13 were all in (as well a the 8) and the 2-4-6-10-12 were all out.
  • Dylan Davis, Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Luis Saez each won twice.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. now leads the meet with 25 victories, Manny Franco has 24.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Angel Saurez had the natural hat trick starting with race 2.
Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • Race 5: Cotton Tooyah (Miguel Vasquez/Jerry Bozzo) won. The trainer will celebrate his 98th birthday later this month. He became the oldest trainer in the 100+ years of T-bred racing in North America to win a race. He has achieved that feat more than once in recent years.

  • Race 6: That must have been the GPW-Thursday-mid-October rendition of Affirmed vs. Alydar. Awesome race.

Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Race 7: Norman Casse finished first, his dad Mark finished second.
  • Race 6: Jukebox Money and Love Shack Baby were in the same race. The former won. B-52 fans rejoice.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $32,000.
  • Race 1: The $.50 tri paid $1,059. The winner paid $84.80 and $50.70, the latter for place.
  • Speed kills: The track was favoring speed much of the day.
