The idea is to find the team most similar to your own franchise from the opposing conference. Try to go East vs. West if poss...

Canucks and Sabres

- entered the league in the same year
- neither have yet to win the cup
- both teams are young and upcoming at the moment
- Swedish rookies

First one to come to my mind as well. Good points.
On top of your points,

-Bogosian and Gudbranson are both huge, fairly physical dmen that were picked 3rd overall, traded, and did not live up to their hype and have had injury issues, and are only one year apart in age.

-Okposo and Eriksson are both overpaid wingers from the same FA crop, where their best days seem to be in the past. Okposo has 22 points in 56 games, Eriksson has 21 points in 58 games.

-Both teams have had potential HHOF players or great players play on both teams: Mogilny, Peca, Miller, Vanek, etc.

-Both teams are currently desperate for a good top 6 LW.

-Both teams traded each other their highly touted prospects that ended up busting - Hodgson for Kassian.

-Sam Reinhart is from Vancouver.

-Benning has been a part of management/scouting and has drafted core players for both teams.

-Never have elite talent
-Always competitive, never a winner
-Generally considered to be boring (not saying either one of them are)
-Marian Gaborik
-Rarely pick high
-When they do, it's usually meh
-Good at getting NHL players out of the draft, albeit not stars
-Try to buy the stars they can't draft
-Solid pedigree of developing American players
-The biggest American market, in different ways
-Giving up a ton of shots is "good defense"

Leafs and Canucks. Neither has won a thing in the expansion era, both have a history of star Swedes leading the way, both have great young talent and both have large, insufferable fanbases.

As someone who has always hated the Canucks... I love them.

the wild have the lowest xGA/60 in the league by a decent margin, they very clearly play good defense lmao

historically. rangers and blackhawks. well off the likes of montreal, toronto, and detroit in terms of success. even when the blackhawks pulled ahead of the rangers in cups in recent years, the rangers were still cup contenders and presidents trophy winners. chicago is the only original 6 team in the west...
