I’ll take your word for we pay more including nhl players. Then what I added is if it truly was an unfair advantage there is no way the other teams would stand by and let Tampa take the advantage ally he way to a cup. It’s just not possible, it’s more likely there is some kind of tax loopholes or something that evens it all out.

There is no special tax loophole for millionaire pro athletes collecting income in Canada...nor should they be. As a Canadian taxpayer why would you be OK with them getting a special loophole? You wouldn't. That's why it doesn't and should not exist. Nothing "evens out". Where you play and are taxed are major considerations and effect your take home pay considerably.

Tampa DOES takes advantage of their tax laws by signing guys to lower cap hits then they would accept here. That's how you get Stamkos for 9.5 and Kuch for 9.

Same, but thats on Noodles. O-dog was saying how bad the ducks were last night and how bad they were over the last 17-18 games. Noodles has to chime and hear himself speak and say something about the Leafs and then accuse O'Neill of just yelling and not saying anything which wasnt true. Noodles is a massive idiot.

Noodles is a tool.

"BUT THEYRE MISSING PLAYERS!!!!"

And then he tries create a hypothetical if the Leafs lost Rielly. I can tell you right now they would not be as bad as the Ducks.

Turns out it does exist. Matthews pays 15% tax on his signing bonus’ (93% of his deal) because he is a US resident apparently. Should o care more? Sure, can I do anything about it no.

Rich people have always found ways to screw the rest of us. Corporations pay little tax. Unfortunately it is what it is

All of Tampa contracts come with an asterisk because of Floridas tax code. Technically they have an unfair advantage over many teams and shouldn't be used for any comparisons.

Why do people keep espousing this myth. I once saw a taxbill from a player from California (higher tax than Toronto), it was pretty negligble compared to their actual tax rate.

Just listened to the first hour. O’Neill has said maybe 5 words since the exchange with Noodles.

As awkward as it was, it was an entertaining exchange and this is one of the many reasons this show is miles and miles ahead of leafs lunch.

Majority of players arent actually employees but registered as either agency or corporation they pay corporate tax rates.

Yep people talking tax advantages are hilariously out in the dark none of these guys pay more than like 25% tax rates. JT owned a house in Canada during his time as a NYI so he wouldve already been considered a Canadian tax resident. Take it from the guy who works in accounting and financial analysis and is actively pursuing a designation in it

Clayton Kershaw's agent structured his deal where he gets his signing bonus in the off-season when he lives in Texas making it ineligible to be taxed in California when he plays for the Dodgers.

Fine, now will someone tell these pundits to shut the F up about the deals these Tbay players are inking for and how they can NEVER be compared to our deals.

the pundits are f***ing with you guys; Florida still has property tax, federal tax, more expensive healthcare and schooling etc.

Texas is another state with no state tax but they have franchise tax which applies to all business income which means all bonuses and advertising revenue players make gets dinged by it.

The NYR have never had trouble getting players and they have a three level tax, federal, state and city. The players just make their residence in conneticut and avoid all of that.

Don't let the Toronto Sports Stasi style propoganda media get you guys

yea but he gets hit with a franchise tax on it then

Edit: your point still stands though he's using something called "Tax planning" but its just a fancy way for rich people to say "tax avoidance" that the rest of us would get hit with GAAR precedents on if we tried

Genuinely interested here... so what would the benefit be for a guy like Marner who's a Canadian resident living in Canada/Ontario? Can you just up and buy a house in Arizona if you're Marner and call yourself a resident to get the cheap tax rate on a signing bonus like Matthews?

I’d imagine there is a number of days you have to reside in the US. So if he bought a house at the very least he’d have to spend every summer there.

There are other loopholes too, the way these guys label themselves can change the tax rate guy above says they can be called corporations and pay less taxes.

Matthews is only paying $10m in tax on a $58m. Us normal folk get screwed basically for not being rich.
