Coach thinks highly of Barzal and that’s great. Barzal is certainly a terrific talent. Can skate stride for stride with McDavid and both probably have the best edge work in the NHL. Barzal is one of the most gifted passers as well.

McDavid overall is on another planet though. Barzal isn’t close to the goal scorer or finisher McDavid is.

Either way, pretty high praise from the coach.

Different types of skaters, both supremely talented. Leddy can go stride for stride with McDavid though

Just another thing to add to the list of "Islanders and Oilers are brothers"

In case others don't know why we are brothers

- Both had a shitty arena until recently
- Both had 80s cup glory
- Both have orange and blue colors
- Both had high draft picks
- Both have a Judas (Pronger and Tavares)

And now
- Both have a speedy player that is loved

I'll drink to it as long as it's Barclay's you refer to.

The kid is super competitive which I like in young stars. Loved his compete level in the playoffs. Trotz pushing buttons..

Agree. Not to say JT didn’t compete but I feel like Barzal has more of the “I’m better than everybody” mindset and takes losses personally

When I read the thread title my first thought was that Trotz was comparing Barzal to Roenick, and I wondered if Mat maybe carries a flask in his hockey pants....

JT was discouraged the latter part of his time here. His compete level wasn't bad, but the thing that I disliked about him most, was his poor skating.

Barzal is young, pumped, and I would say confident, not arrogant. Just needs to work on his mistakes/laziness, his D, and his shot, to become an excellent 2-way player, something that I never considered with JT.

Still, I am glad that JT is gone and Barzal is one of our leaders. Much better suited to the new NHL, and much cheaper.

I'm still pissed that JT walked and we got nothing for him, though.

Not quite tonight he didnt...

That's what separates guys like McDavid/Kucherov etc from the Barzal types - they somehow do it every single night. Barzal has the potential to be a Kucherov esque talent offensively (in a different system) but his consistency and ability to overcome difficult adversity is what is holding him back.

Saying what? You think I hold a grudge? lol
We beat you 4-1 the next year, changing of the guard was a beautiful thing.

As much as the Isles losing in 84 to the Oilers crushed us -- when you look at that roster (in 83 as well actually) you really are amazed we got even one game! We were older and banged up and it was clearly the time for Gretz, Mess, Coffey, Kurri, Fuhr.. jeezzzzzz... to own the Cup!

Mcdavid is insane. He is on another level.
