He didn't really progress this year. disappointing. Especially when you consider Sandin and Liljegren didn't impress in their appearances either.
He made massive gains this past year. He was forced to play against teams best lines and he grew immensely. Why do people keep up this stupid narrative. In 3-5 years he could win a Norris. He has a few characters that not many guys do. He is fearless. He is team centric. and he wants to win soo so bad. on top of that he is 2nd best skater we have on back end after Rielly and he is pretty damn close to him too.

Hey guys. In a trade thread on the main boards, a subject came up about a possible trade between TOR and WPG.

SOME Jets fans said they didn't need LD and that they wouldnt need Dermott because they have Sami Niku. This lead me to post a poll about who is better: Sami Niku v. Travis Dermott

In case you have an opinion on this matter.

Is there any team with a similar RHD that have similar depth chart issues and will make their player available in a 1-for-1 deal? Because without a young RHD with top 4 potential in return, Dermott shouldnt be dealt.

NYI:
R - Pulock, Mayfield, Dobson
L - Pelech
Mayfield for Dermott?

NYR:
R - Trouba, Fox, DeAngelo
L - Lindgren
DeAngelo for Dermott?

Literally the only 2 options and both are going to require a significant add

DeAngelo has one less goal than Marner and would be our 5th leading point getter and 14 points higher than our #1 scoring Dman. That would be a real big add.

he should get a qualifying offer and dubas should call it a day. if he rejects, he doesn't play next season. if he accepts, he plays next season.

That won't happen. His qualifying offer is $874,125 and any offersheet under $1,395,053* cannot be matched. Someone will easily give him 1.4 million if we don't and we'll have lost him for nothing.

I really don't post here often, but that fanbase clearly has something to prove

Believing Niku is better than Dermott as of right now is a laughable take.

They should've received them though. We could've had both for 2 million combined, assuming they signed the OS. It would be foolish for teams to allow that to happen again.

it doesn't matter that they should've received them. they didn't. that's the point.

it wouldn't be foolish for teams to allow that to happen again, because teams aren't at a legit risk if having their players sign an offer-sheet, because they almost never happen.

Yeah yeah and Laine was supposed to be better than Matthews too. That was the Media drive anyways. They hyped Laine so hard it was a complete misrepresentation of talent like we never seen before.
So who’s better than Matthews,Laine? Yeah ok then :)

Small correction here. An offer sheet under 1.3million can be matched, it just requires no compensation.

I was just reading up on the rules.

Dermott can help himself in a big way financially by having a nice playoff here. Then he can bridge a single year at $2,000,000. The next year he would be arbitration eligible. If he put together a great season next year he could elect arbitration and beat the negotiating in a flat cap stage.
That might not be wisest thing but it could be a option.

I think 5 years @$3,250,000 would be a wise move for his agent and himself. His numbers indicate $2,000,000 per short term like Holl. He is better off going 5 years and so is the team.

Dermott could front load With a nice signing bonus year one and become a UFA right in his prime at his 28 years old year.

5 years seems right or even better 6 @ $3,500,000. Thats a cool $21,000,000 and takes him right through which could possibly be a difficult time for players to negotiate anything good from contracts.

Sign Dermott @ $3,500,000 and trade Kerfoot who makes the same seems right. We could get some draft picks for Kerfoot or a draft pick and prospect. Whatever removes his money fully so Dermott gets signed without moving the cap bar.

I think Spezza can play third line center better right now and that allows us to keep both of Kappy and Johnsson a little longer. Goat can play fourth line center. Kerfoot is terrible on faceoffs too. Getting rid of Kerfoot is the best move to sign Dermott.

Dermott is in a bad spot. Had a rough year for the most part after coming off shoulder surgury. Got better in the 2nd half but with 4LD already likely on the NHL roster next year with the Lehtonen signing and Muzzin extension,we can literally wait him out as long as it takes to get him at a decent deal since he's pre-arb. He also doesn't put up points which usually helps in negotiations.

I'd offer one year at 900k or 2 years at $1.5M. If he dominates/plays the right side over the next two years and earns a better deal then good for him, if not we aren't committed long term and can move on.

I'll wait to see how he performs in the playoffs.

Muzz/Holl (hard matchups)
Rielly/Ceci (2nd/3rd line matchups)
Dermott/Barrie (ozone starts, 3rd/4th line matchups...if Dermott can support Barrie to a degree where Barrie can contribute offensively...yes guy!)
