Whats the name of the hockey shop over there?

Robinson is literally on your way to Pittsburgh from the airport. I'd make a short stop there before even checking in top the hotel.

Other than that I'd stay near the City - downtown, southside, market square(in downtown), Shadyside. All very fun and all very close to you.

Be sure to also visit Souper Bowl bar right across CEC. It's Penguins Country, and if it turns out you're across the pond to see the Pens play, you won't run out of Jägermeister.

Last visit playoffs 2012, next one hopefully this May.

Take the T (light rail system) over to Station Square and then take the Incline to Mt. Washington. The Coal Hill Steakhouse is pretty good and relatively reasonably priced, although expect to be price gouged anywhere on Mt. Washington.

That or Milano's. Though Milano's service is crappy their food is amazing. Or walk down to Sammy's for some corn beef. I really want to go to a game now.

Milanos right before a game is crazy busy. Good food. Souper Bowl is Fun, Carnegie science center is worth a visit.

I would recommend the Natural History Museum/Art Museum if you have the time and a really great place to eat on Mt. Washington would be Monterrey Bay Fish Grotto though it's pricey (30$+) and you'd probably need reservations.

When I went there in October I stayed a week and didn't rent a car. My hotel was right across from CEC and they had a shuttle which was awesome. I'd tip the driver a few bucks everytime he drove us around but it was cheap in comparison to cars or cabs. Check with your hotel if they have one.

Things we did other than the two Pens games.

Two Pirates games, tour of PNC, tour or CEC, tour of Heinz, Duquesne Incline, shopping, etc.

Most of that isn't an option for you but I'm sure you'll find some stuff to do.

We went to the south side for drinks a few nights. I'm bad with names but there's a ton of bars including a Primantis.

It's pretty new, but I'm pretty sure Uber just started with service in Pittsburgh (I live in Seattle). It's a great, much more reliable alternative to taxis, and should cost about the same if you have UberX.

Just wanna chip in that, uh, it's a cool town and I dunno if you wanna waste your time trying to go to practically suburban malls. Unless you really, really like malls, you should be able to find the things you are looking for. And if you're looking for a Dick's Sporting Goods, there's one in the Waterfront at Homestead, which is more "part of the city" (even if it isn't) and is accessible by bus.

The tours of the stadiums were awesome. CEC was on gameday so it was pretty lame because we couldn't go down on the gameday level.

PNC and Heinz were amazing. PNC for the two Pirates games was the best experience of my life. One was the Wildcard game and the other was game 3 against the Cards...both wins. :)

Primantis was good, went there for MNF. Wife at the whole Pittsburgher so she was pretty pumped about that considering she weighs like 115 lol.

The bar across from Primantis was good, they had a lot of different kind of beer.

The bars around PNC were awesome before and after games. Drinking on the street with a bunch of Pirates fans was awesome as well.

We went shopping somewhere and it was a bunch of boutiques and shops with a bunch of knockoff stuff, it was pretty decent.

Duquesne incline was awesome and definitely recommended.

Overall, I really enjoy Pittsburgh. I'm a Pirates and Steelers fan on top of being a Pens fan so seeing everyone around the city wearing the city's gear made me feel really good.(As weird as that sounds) Even my wife really loved it and she wants to make it an annual thing. Told her not to bank on the Pirates making the playoffs again anytime soon but hopefully next time we catch a Steelers game. They were in London when we went last year.

EDIT: Being in the Pirates dugout just hours before the Wildcard game is pretty cool. And we went in the Steelers dressing room. We also went on both fields. Didn't do any of that stuff a CEC.

Wow, you hit the jackpot that week. How'd you score all those Bucco tickets? Had to cost a pretty penny if scalping the first playoff games in 21 years.

The city was INSANE those games and it is always the absolute best drinking in front of the stadiums wit a bunch of like minded fans. I'm sure that did trump a first month regular season hockey game.

BTW, the "Pittsburgher" at Primantis is the worst possible sandwich they have haha, I still like it though.

I don't really post on here but I thought I could tell you about some good places to visit when you come to the burgh. Like others have said, the Duquesne Incline is a must when visiting Pittsburgh. The views on Mt. Washington are amazing, and inside the station at the top they have a bunch of pictures that show the history of the incline and Pittsburgh.

You should definitely visit the Strip District on the banks of the Allegheny. Its about a 15-20 min walk from CEC and you'll find a bunch of different shops and restaurants that sell all kinds of Pittsburgh merchandise (highly recommend going on a Saturday morning around 10am). If you're looking for a place to eat, definitely go to Primanti's.

As others have said, the Carnegie Museums and the Cathedral of Learning in Oakland are amazing. Currently the Carnegie is hosting the Carnegie International which showcases all sorts of art from around the world. Also, one awesome feature of the Cathedral of Learning is that it houses a collection of 29 nationality rooms that showcase the ethnic groups that helped build the city of Pittsburgh. (The Swedish Nationality room is room 135) There are often tours at a small price that give background info on all the rooms, but I highly recommend just going on your own so you can go at your own pace. Also in Oakland is Schenley Park where Phipps Conservatory is.

right outside Heinz Field is the Carnegie Science Center and SportsWorks. If you visit the Science Center you can take a tour of a decommissioned submarine.

I also highly recommend visiting the Heinz History Center in the Strip District and Point State Park and the Fort Pitt Museum. The history center is an amazing museum that illustrates the history of Western Pennsylvania and houses the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum. The sports museum has everything you could ever dream about in regard to Pittsburgh sports. It has an overture theater where you can watch the Immaculate Reception and Mario hoisting the cup, Honus Wagner's baseball glove and a history of the old Duquesne Gardens. The History Center is amazing.

I hope these recommendations along with all the others from this thread help you in your visit to Pittsburgh. Its a great city and I hope you enjoy your visit.

Trip to Pittsburgh

I know you folks are probably in full Pens mode (understandably so), but a few buddies and me are going this weekend to catch a couple Pirates-Jays games (we're from Toronto). It was a last minute decision since we weren't sure about the weather forecast, and unlike T.O., Pittsburgh actually has a beautiful OUTDOOR stadium.

Just wondering if anyone has a second to give a guy some tips on the city. A lot of the hotels are booked around the park, so we will have to stay somewhere a few miles out and drive in for each game.

Will this be problematic on a Saturday and Sunday or will traffic be pretty tame?
How much is parking/can we park a few hours before the game and wander around?
Is there a hotel on the outskirts that's got a good reputation that wouldn't be booked?
Most importantly, any other helpful tips?

If anyone would have the kindness in their heart to form a response, I'd really appreciate it.

Also, if it helps, I'm cheering for Pittsburgh over Philly/NYR in the next round, and my favourite team is the Leafs, so you should all feel sorry for me. I checked for a similar thread but my search came up empty. If I missed one, this can be merged.

Cheers!

Pittsburgh is not that big of a city, and traffic is very tame here. You wouldn't have a problem getting around whatsoever. Parking prices at the stadium all depends on the location of where you park. Some of the lots can be parked at for $10, but lots closer to the stadium are $20+. If you guys are not tailgating and don't mind a little walk, there is a large casino down the street (about a 10+ minute walk) that has a huge parking garage in which you could park for free (http://www.riverscasino.com/pittsburgh).

As for hotel recommendations, the below place is cheap, clean, and it's in a great location. It's 5 minutes from Consol Energy Center, and about 7 or so minutes from PNC Park. This hotel is located in the Southside, which is one main road of bars and restaurants, with a bunch of side streets. Parking is free on the side streets, but this area get crowded at night and sometimes it's hard to find spots.

Hope this helps you, and have fun this weekend.

I usually stay at the Hampton over by the Sports Museum. Its an OK hotel but the big thing is free parking. Its a little bit of a walk to the game but very do-able.

Check out Hofbrauhaus, Penn Brewery, Gandy Dancer, Cure... Pittsburgh has a lot of little out of the way places that are very cool. Might want to try a google search.

The marathon is on Sunday so watch out for that. Not sure when everything is cleared away but parking could be at a premium, with lots of road closures in the area.

Agreed on the hamptons. It's where I stayed as well. Hotel was clean and decent priced. I walked to the rink in jan so it was a bit cold but it wasn't terrible.

I stayed at the Hilton Doubletree and it was great. It's right next to Consol and they have a shuttle that can bring you wherever. For Pirates games we took the free subway to the game and stumbled back to the hotel drunk after hanging out at the bars outside the stadium. Didn't seem like that far of a walk and we even picked up a pizza on the way.

Hampton Inn and Suites on Smallman street in the strip district, its a little walk, but free breakfast and parking.

Also, if you go out late at night, its impossible to find a taxi, so dont stray to far from your hotel, at least its that way for Steeler games anyway...

Best tip I can give anyone regarding hotels is something we used on our family road trip to Idaho and back last year. In each state there are rest areas on the highways and in these there are coupon booklets dedicated to hotels and broken down area by area. The deals in that booklet are more inexpensive than walk in rates and those walk in rates are often more inexpensive than the online ordering rates.

We stayed in a brand new comfort inn in Pittsburgh for 60 or 70 a night, I don't recall but it was a very nice motel and we wouldve spent 100+ easily without using that system.

This of course matters if cost is an issue and you don't mind driving to the ballpark and downtown.

Holy crap yes. I bought 4 tickets to the Pirates and 4 tickets to the Pens and that was like 50% of the cost of my whole trip including plane, hotel, food and booze. Mind you I'm not one for ****** seats, was sitting in Captain Morgans club seats for Pens and behind dugouts for Pirates but still. If I had to do it again I don't think I'd change anything though...I love being close to the action....if I'm going to have ****** seats I might as well save the 4K and stay home.
