If Byfield and Turcotte open in Ontario, how does that affect their contract? Does that count as a year if they're playing pro? Or do they get an AHL contract?
They have NHL SPC. Byfield, Turcotte and Kaliyev are slide eligible provided they play 5 or fewer NHL games.

Playing 5 games in the AHL will count as a year of professional experience for calculating waivers and RFA stuff.

Assuming the rules are the same as normal, no, it does not count against their ELC if they play in the AHL. See Bjornfot last season playing there at 18 years old. It's only NHL games that count. Their NHL contract is two-way, so if they play in the AHL they would get paid their AHL wage according to their contract. Kaliyev is $70K, Byfield is 80K this year.
