Robin Lehner is a UFA. Wouldn't it make more sense to try to sign him instead of trading assets for Jones?

Why on god's green earth would Lehner come HERE after the season he's had? And with the season WE'VE had? And with the iffy history that already exists between him and the team that already gave up once on him?

It makes tons of sense for us. It makes zero sense for Lehner.

I think & hope they will suck next yr but after that I hope they start making their move to improve every yr after that. IMO after the 2020 draft they should have enough good prospects to fill out most of their roster along with the good prospects they have now & should only need to tinker from yr to yr if they look like they are improving otherwise something else will need to be done.

Brown, Batherson, Tkachuk, White, Formenton, Norris, Paul, Chabot, Wolanin, Jaros, Harpur, Brannstrom, JBD, Hogberg, Gustavsson, Daccord & maybe Chlapik & Balcers makes about 18 players plus the 2019 & 2020 draft picks who have a shot at making the roster should be more than enough good young players to fill out the roster for 2020 - 21 roster. Have a nice weekend.

We have some very good prospects in Batherson, Wolanin and Brown. We already have graduates Chabot, Tkachuk and White. The rest may not work out. We need some top tier prospects that can probably only be obtained from top 5 draft picks. That is why I want to tank for the next few years so we get elite prospects. The ones we have now are not elite level.

Agreed - comparing Calgray’s Top 6 vs ours plus prospects is depressing.

If the Islanders want him at all, they will have a massive advantage, and he'll surely want to stay.

They helped rebuild a guy who always had #1 G potential, he has a great year, they hopefully go deep in the playoffs.. he's got his life back on track..

If anything he will be grateful, along with knowing his value, and will sign a fair longer term deal if he can get it seeing as he almost lost it all.

This is a guy who now has a family, and was going on a 1 year deal.

Don't you think it would still be better to try to convince Lehner to sign here instead of trading for Jones?

I get what you are saying but my comment was in response to the idea of trading for Jones.

I might have a better chance of getting a porsche dealership to give me a 911 in a straight-up trade-in for my 2007 Honda Civic than the Ottawa Senators have of convincing Lehner to sign here.

That doesn't mean we should trade for Jones though. So technically yes, I guess you are correct.

Maybe the question would better be asked as "wouldn't it be better to have Robin Lehner's agent hang up on Pierre Dorion after 45 seconds of negotiations than to trade for Jones"... in which case the answer is still "yes", but it's at least a more realistic hypothetical scenario.

The Sens should look to trade some bad contracts this offseason. Even if it means taking some bad contracts back it could be a good thing.

Contracts Sens Should Move
Bobby Ryan signed for three more seasons (2021-22). Cap hit: $7,250,000 . For next three seasons he gets a $2m signing bonus each year and $5.5m in base salary.

Mikkel Boedker signed for one more season. Cap hit: $4m. Actual salary is $3m.

Mike Condon signed for one more season. Cap hit: $2.4m. Actual salary is $3m.

Contracts Sens Could Trade For

Corey Perry signed for two more seasons. Cap hit: $8,625,000. 2019-20: $8m Base Salary. 2020-21: $3m signing bonus, $4m base salary

Milan Lucic signed for four more seasons. Cap hit: $6m. 2019-20: $3m signing bonus, $3m in base salary. 2020-21: $3m signing bonus, $1m base salary. 2021-22: $2.5m signing bonus, $2.5m base salary. 2022-23: $3m signing bonus, $1m base salary.

David Backes signed for two more seasons. Cap hit: $6m. 2019-20: $3m signing bonus, $1m base salary. 2020-21: $1m signing bonus, $3m base salary.

James Neal signed for four more seasons. Cap hit: $5,750,000. Salary: $5,750,000

Ilya Kovalchuk signed for two more seasons. Cap hit: %6,250,000. 2019-20: $5,300,000 signing bonus, $700,000 base salary. 2020-21: $4,250,000 base salary.

Note: Some of these players might be bought out this offseason and others might be traded after they receive their signing bonus.

The Sens should have tried to sign Robin Lehner and Peter Mrazek last off season. It cost $2.5 m for both ($1m Lehner/$1.5m Mrazek). Even if we only managed to sign one we would have had good goaltending this season.
Again, the Lehner ship has sailed, 0 chance he thinks of signing in Ottawa

We should really fire the GM before any decisions are made lol

Hopefully the new pres will fire Dorion asap and we can start building an actual NHL roster

Most of those long term contracts can't be moved. A team like edm would have to give up a LOT to move that contract. Also the Sens can keep their bad contracts and let them expire

I think Lehner signing with OTTAWA would require a long term contract at a high annual salary plus bonus to beat all other offers. THAT ain’t Gonna happen!

The only way to get rid of players with bad contracts ( overpaid) is to buy them out or trade them to other teams for either players with equally bad contracts or paying some of the remaining contract owed. I doubt that Dorion can make a beneficial trade.

The front office already decided they were taking the lazy way out. Trade everyone with value, let the extremely long list of bad decisions expire, and either hide out from the media or only give controlled interviews. Highly unlikely they do much to move remaining bad salary, they'll just use it to hit the floor at this point.

Literally, a monkey could do what Dohrion and Scrooge have done this last year. Hell, it might have even done better than those idiots.

How about Ceci for Byfuglien? The Jets will probably make some changes if they lose this series

I don't think that would be one of them...

Do you think they consider trading Byfuglien so they can sign Myers?

If they do decide to trade Byfuglien to free up cap space he could be an interesting target for the Sens. He would be a solid veteran.

All the contracts you've listed that need to move are in the "not sh!t" category but I don't think it'll be possible.

Also, under no circumstance do I want Lucic, Backes, Neal, Perry or Kovalchuk.... old expensive over the hill vets are a big no no for me, unless they come with a great draft pick/prospect combo but even then I'd rather have a young player gain experience.

Even if they decide to move on from Byfuglien I don't think they consider an offer revolving around Ceci.

Buff would get a lot better than Ceci but damn I would be lying if I said I didn’t love the thought of Big Buff joining the party.
Yeah no doubt. If we could somehow swing that deal we take it and run.
