to me it's not a coincidence that this Faulk talk picked up steam after Hamonic left the trade market. Hamonic was a good talking point for them and they need a new one.
Who really knows though? Only the GMs and the players involved.

Yup. But the window starts now. McDavid and Drai are on ELCs.
It's time to take the mindset that we need to win now. Every move we make should make us better today. Build the team around McDavid, Drai, Hall, and Talbot. Do whatever is necessary to build a roster that can win now.
Enough hope and promise for the future. The time is now!

Some teams I'm ruling out as trading partners:
Buffalo - They only have 1 D-man they're looking to trade and he sucks (Cody Franson) and they only have 1 terrible forward they're trying to trade (Matt Moulson). My pipe dream is Griffin Reinhart for Mark Pysyk, but Buffalo is going to want a LHD that's more established.
Calgary - Rival team. Only guy we'd look at who's available is Dennis Wideman and he's a terrible player (and a ref destroyer). Pass.
Columbus - I wouldn't rule out a big Seth Jones offer sheet but there's a 99.99% chance that's not happening. They need D so I can't see them moving one and they just re-signed Savard. Hartnell is an albatross for us and we have stacked LWs. Jack Johnson and Fedor Tyutin are not strong options. Lots of guys that would kill our cap on this team.
Arizona - They aren't trading OEL and we don't have Matthews. John Chayka is an analytical guy and Hanzal/Stone/Murphy are analytical darlings....they aren't going anywhere. Chayka probably tries to re-sign Hanzal immediately. Other than that there isn't much here.
Toronto - Bozak kills our cap, no D-men to acquire here either. They are rebuilding too so there isn't much we can scour away that makes sense.
Vancouver - I thought about Edler and Hansen, but Canucks fans insist the price is sky-high and we've seen the "divisional price" from this team before. Can't see Benning and Chiarelli connecting again unless it's a minor Larsen-like deal.
Winnipeg - We don't have the LHD that it would take to shake Trouba loose (think better than Klefbom or Klefbom+) and other than that, it's 2 mediocre goalies and Matheson's favourite player left. I'll pass on Drew Stafford.

plus, we are 'lucky' to be in this draft spot. I know we lost the lotteries but our huge amount of injuries this season inflated our loss record. Like you say, we shouldn't be guarding every little bit of trade value. We can lose a trade or two if it means the trade actually happens and the team starts winning games. The 4th overall won't help us win next season. We'd probably put them back in junior.

Faulk would be a real nice piece, no question, but I think we're over thinkin it a bit. He's not P.K.

Yup, it's got to be a "win now" mentality. McDavid is the franchise and we have our pieces set to build around, we finally have our identity. Let's build a winner.

I keep coming to the same thought at the end of every week for the last 3 months.
The D I'd be willing to trade Hall for are most definitely not available unless there's someone out there we haven't heard about yet.
The guys rumoured to be available I'd only be willing to deal one of Eberle, RNH or 4th overall for in sort of package with other stuff potentially coming back.
Unless someone really loves Tkachuk or Dubois, doubt we get too much value to trade down.
In the end, anything less than 2 top 4 RHD by August is a fail and another waste of a season upcoming.

Hall is a top 4 LW in the nhl. Faulk might be top 30 d depends on opinions. There is no way Faulk gets hall alone let alone hall+. A reasonable value for Faulk would be eberle/Rnh +

I think he's better than just a PP specialist though. Despite not being tall, he's thick and doesn't get pushed off the puck. And he's shown he can play against other teams best players.
Where we do agree is if they ask for Hall + 4th overall they can **** off. I wouldn't trade Hall alone for him but I value Hall as much as anyone likely.

imo they would prefer a center anyway. Eric Staal is out (and not as good), and they have a gaping hole there.

Carolina doesn't even really have a top 6 centre, forget top line. It's really bad and I think they'd love to get one badly.
Staal is a great 3C.
I think they hope to add a 1C and then have Lindholm develop into the legit 2C going forward but he's not there yet IMO.

My only concern is his +/-. It's a useless stat to look at alone, but when you're the worst on the team for multiple years it's an interesting stat to consider.
Then you consider on a bad team he plays against the best and as way more minutes than the rest since the rest are so young.
Every time I watch him I like him a lot too.
Stat could just be one to ignore.

As far as I know it's all speculation because local media guys like Stauffer keep bringing him up as a "possible" trade target and hint that he might not be as untouchable as some fans think.
I dunno, stranger things have happened but it smells a lot like a radio host trying to generate conversation during that lull prior to draft day.

If you buy that Klefbom, Sekera and Davidson were top 4 dman then they could potentially get by with 1 top4 addition and some development from the prospects and decent depth additions.
Stauffer has been name dropping him for a few weeks, and Gregor just wrote a blog stating that he is certain Carolina would be willing to listen to offers for him.
Nothing from the national side, or carolina's side, but Carolina doesn't have much in the way of media guys who would be in the know.
