there's no trash (pardon the expression) like Spezza, Michalek, Cammalleri and Boyes playing prominent roles. If there is, they're rare. They're mostly amazing complete two-way players. You could even lump in Ryan with those 4.

You can't win with Spezza, Michalek, Cammalleri, Ryan and Boyes. They're all slow, one dimensional, easy players to play against. Teams will destroy you.

a 2nd? what? come on man. he's our best defenceman imo. he's the guy i want out there in any situation with a game on the line.

You think Methot is our best defenceman? Im a big Methot fan, but the guy has struggled at times this year and has been a healthy scratch more than once.

Any chance you are forgetting someone?

Not the best, but one of our better D. The healthy scratches were more because of off ice (allegedly) than on ice activities.

This is the reason I'd trade Spezza even if he got back to 100%. Spezza's not a winner and he's OK with it.

Team trades Foligno for Methot... Begins looking for top six forward

Here we go again with this ****. How many times does this trade have to be discussed? We had a surplus of forwards at the time and deficiency in defensemen. The team didn't create a hole in its lineup by trading Foligno.

Michalek is neither slow nor one-dimensional. Spezza on the other hand...

Looking around the league, Spezza doesn't really seem to fit the mould of an NHL calibre captain. Almost all NHL captains are either exceptionally skilled offensive talents (Crosby, Ovechkin, Thornton, etc.), heart and soul type players (Ott, Callahan, Doan, etc.), or complete two-way players (Getzlaf, St. Louis, Toews, etc.). He doesn't have the defensive ability to be considered a 200-foot player, and so far this season it's quite apparent that his offensive ability is not what it used to be.

Then why is this team looking for a top six forward right now? Mainly a LW?

Foligno was only 24 when dealt... 26 now

Was there any long term thinking done? Seems like team is just spinning its wheels... I just hope if the team trades for a top six forward we don't move a D... Then a few months from now be looking for a similar D the team just traded

Spezza was arguably our best player when we went to the finals. He has a history of elevating his game in the playoffs even going as far back as his first ever playoff game. I highly doubt that he's a loser and okay with it, there's just not room for everybody to win a championship. Many great players never win anything.

I wonder how much value Wiercioch has. 2 million is a lot for a tweener.

Two sides to that coin. We'd be looking for D had we not made that trade and our system appeared significantly deeper at forward than defense when we made that trade.

Plus, there's a theory that forwards are easier and cheaper to find on teh trade market (if Doug Murray got 2 2's then that seems to make sense).

Edit: in other words, we didn't create a hole in the lineup, we shifted it from defense to forward - where we seemed better prepared to fill it in the short term.

If we didn't make that trade, we wouldn't have made the playoffs last year. Methot was our best dman, and is our 2nd best now that Karlsson is back. Foligno was like our 5th or 6th best forward, and despite the point totals was just another support player that's easier to replace than a top pairing dman.

Michalek isn't very good defensively and for such a big strong player, he doesn't engage or win enough puck battles. He's also not fast at this point in his career.

Agreed on Spezza. But my argument isn't limited to the captain. Adding guys like Cammalleri and Boyes sure as heck isn't a recipe for success. The team needs less players like that, not more

Unlike those teams we cant add expensive pieces we have to be creative.Till we can spend you wont get much better then what we have

Adding 2 pieces and staying within 2.5 -3 million dollar rental budget is a win win

We arent going to find a Eriksson Iggy or Carter Richards or Hossa Versteeg or Burns Havlat Wiggins in are budget to add never happen

A 47 point season before he was dealt.

Maybe that's not enough production to be top six?

And the next season he had a 19 point season.

I like to hold off labelling top 6 forwards until they produce like a top 6 forward for more than one season. I doubt Foligno ever surpasses his 47 point season.
