Possible Targets (UFA): Browse - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

Possible Targets (RFA): Browse - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

Cap Space: ~7 million

As it stands right now, we seem to have no glaring needs, except maybe an upgrade on Weber/Irwin/Bitetto and a depth forward or two to replace Gaudreau/Salomaki.

Our current picks include; 1st, 2nd, 3rd (FLA), 4th, 4th (COL), 5th, 6th and 7th.

Due to our somewhat depleted prospect pool and our contender status, any deals we do make will likely include picks rather than roster players or current prospects going the other way, unless of course Poile goes after someone like Duchene or Stone.

I don't have the time to look for the specific players right now but an addition to center would be pretty nice. Fiala and Hartman have showed chemistry, and when everyone's healthy I could see us looking like this:

Forsberg - Johansen - Arvidsson
Jarnkrok - Turris - Smith
Fiala - X - Hartman
Watson - Bonino - Sissons

Imo, that's a stacked lineup. Of course, you could throw Jarny to 3C and acquire a depth winger and paying 4 million bucks for a 4C is not ideal but that could be worked out in the summer. That 4th line has been fairly good, even offensively, and was solid shutdown line in last year's playoffs. Rinaldo, Salomaki are nice depth players but I don't see them having a spot unless someone's injured. So, the other option:

Forsberg - Johansen - Arvidsson
Fiala - Turris - Smith
X - Jarnkrok - Hartman
Watson - Bonino - Sissons

Would be nice to have someone known for being a playoff performer (winger or center a la Smith-Pelly). It's still concerning to me how a lot of our players were complete ghosts in the playoffs. I fear we'll have another great regular season then underperform against the Jets/Flames/Sharks or whoever.

Agreed, wouldn't mind having a big, power forward type of player.

I just hope that Duchesne and Stone stay on the market. I'd go hard after either one of them, even just as rentals. We have the rental cap room to take on anybody, at any time. I'd try to concentrate as much of our asset firepower into one big pickup like that rather than anything down at the lower end of the roster.

And then bonus if we could sign one of them longer term in the off-season too, of course. But that doesn't have to be the focus. It doesn't have to be trade-and-sign and the deal doesn't have to be contingent on being able to re-sign them. We're in a position where it's ok to go all-in paying for a big name rental-only trade. Poile did well turning his last couple of pickups into longer term pieces with Turris and Hartman. But we don't NEED to do that again.

Nothing wrong with a good rental to help us win the cup. If that player finds good chemistry with our players maybe after the season he's willing to sign long term. Stone would be my first choice. I believe he would make that 2nd line a 1b line instead. I'd be willing to give up a good package for him

I'm all aboard the Stone train.

I'd prefer to get an extension signed before we traded for him but if he's not willing to do that, I'd do a rental deal.
could we afford what stone would get on the market? he's in line to get paid!

Don't think we have the assets to get Stone or at least the ones we're willing to give up. Also, I think there's a huge chance he ends up signing in Ottawa. That's not a half bad team even with Karlsson gone. Couple of solid defensemen and a legit starting goalie and that's a playoff team. Their forward group is deeeep.

After the obvious inquiries of Duchene and Stone, I'd call Detroit for Gustav Nyquist.

We have very capable 3-4C's in Bonino, Sissons, Jarnkrok and Gaudreau, so that's not a position of need. With Nyquist we'd be adding another Smith-like forward capable of secondary scoring and stunting in 1st line. We'd add competition and more variations for Lavi to play with in case we hit a brick wall.

Forsberg - Johansen - Arvidsson
Nyquist - Turris - Smith
Fiala - Sissons - Hartman
Jarnkrok - Bonino - Watson
(+Grimaldi, Gaudreau, Salomaki, Rinaldo, maybe Tolvanen)

Minus possible roster player going the other way. Now mix and match.

Duchene obviously brings competition as well and would be a more preferable replacement for possible top6 center injuries than any of the one's I listed, but he's also more expensive to acquire.

I would rather do picks and prospect purely for stone. Moving fiala just opens up another hole. Stone may get 20 more points than fiala, is that worth throwing in fabbro and a first??

I am all for trading fabbro, especially after the vesey saga.

Fabbro and tolvanen for stone extended. Get it done.

I don't think picks and a prospect gets Stone if we get an extension negotiated before the trade is made. It's possible that would be enough for a rental but Fiala/Tolvanen would have to go the other way for an extended Stone.

Speaking of Pittsburgh, if they continue their downward spiral do they try to dump some of their older core players not named Crosby or Malkin for younger less expensive players. Maybe Kessel or hornqvist comes available.

If stone was playing on the second line and getting top pp mins, a 70 point season isn’t out of the question. He scores a lot of greasy goals which is something we really lacked against Winnipeg last year. I think fiala’s trajectory right now is a 55-60 point winger at most (right now he’s on pace for less than 40 pts). I don’t really want to include tolvanen in any deal that we are also giving up our first in this years draft. Young skilled players on ELCs are very valuable, and I think tolvanen is gonna be a very good player and the replacement to smith on the second line.

He would be a good fit for the net-front presence we need... in the short term anyway... I always worry about his durability and now he has that 5-year deal at $5.3M... so I might take a pass on him now. Although his production has been remarkably consistent over a decade. I'd be chasing other guys first at least.
