With Soucy out, I don't see Brodin being moved. Dumba probably won't either given as you mentioned how low his value is.

I highly doubt Guerin cares enough about playoffs this year to not move Brodin just because Soucy is out. If he gets an offer he likes for Brodin, he'll do it.

It isn't just about the playoffs; Brodin is something the Wild don't have any of in the system. A good plug and play defenseman that provides quality minutes, but is a defensive specialist. All of their defense are smallish, good offensive defensemen that may need time to mature defensively. Brodin would be a quality candidate to help with that.

In the Ask Russo podcast on the Athletic today, Walz was a big fan of a potential Kaprizov-Nylander-Fiala line of it could get done

We have Suter, Spurgeon, Pateryn and Soucy who excel on the defensive side of the game and can help the young guys.

Players of Brodin and Dumba calibur are luxuries on the 2nd pair considering we have Suter and Spurgeon on the top pair. They are both luxuries.

I mean why not have Pateryn and Hunt as 2nd pairing defensemen if we have Suter and Spurgeron then? Having a solid top 4 is one of the reasons why Minnesota has been so good, and when they moved Scandella - it took them a season or two to find a solid enough replacement. Furthermore, Dumba has more TOI than Spurgeon this season. But they are all well within a few minutes. Just seems like trading Brodin or Dumba without knowing who is going to replace them is kind of foolish. For all we know Belpedio turns out like Mike Reilly.

I though they were moving Pateryn? Also who knows how Soucy is going to respond next season.

This caught my attention. A. It’s so bizarre to me that someone who works for the club would be speculating about a trade target on a podcast/public Q&A. B. Toronto’s reportedly had interest in one of Brodin and Dumba for a bit now, but I don’t know that I’d heard any details about what the Wild would receive in any deal. For Walz to mention Nylander by name, it makes me wonder if that’s something that’s been discussed internally.

It's not like you're trading them for nothing. You get a top 6 center back for them. Our solid top 4 has won us nothing.

I don't think Walz knows anything that gets talked about internally

It has helped keep this team competitive. I don't see a long term top 6 center coming back...especially one of Brodin's caliber.

That’s very possible. I work in media in a different sport, and in this sport anyway, it’s pretty common for the local broadcast team to be aware of what’s happening behind the scenes. Especially with former players who have relationships with front-office staff.

Give me some examples of long term top 6 centers that are of Brodin's caliber

Didn’t we confirm that we could get Trocheck back? He’s the same age as Brodin, so if he’s not a long-term top 6 center, Brodin isn’t a long term top 4 D.

So to recap what we anticipate tomorrow:

Parise for Ladd+prospect
Brodin for Trochek
Dumba for Nylander
Staal for 2020 1st
Pateryn/Hunt for 4th

I think the thought is that forwards and defensemen usually age a little differently.
That’s fair, but do we even know if Brodin wants to resign here? My train of thought here is that I can promise you that this team doesn’t make the playoffs with Ek and Staal as their top 2 Cs next year. Trading Brodin could fix a problem that we have, and he is replaceable to some extent.

I find it interesting that Russo said 2 days ago that he gets the sense that Guerin is trying to make some big-time moves before the deadline, but today he basically said he’d have to be blown away to make a trade. Maybe by big-trade he was just referring to Koivu or Parise potentially leaving, and now that Koivu is staying put, there’s not much there?

Can you imagine Toronto with both Barrie and Dumba? Talk about a Swiss cheese defense!

There’s Toronto level bad defense and then there’s Dumba. All around he’s a solid defender but when he has a mistake, they usually go for size. You can live with that if his game is going.

I mean, they’ve called Dermott a “top 4” defenseman for most of the year. That’s how far removed from knowing what defending actually looks like they are.

I saw one of them call Barrie a 1D too

I was a big proponent of not selling Dumba for most of the year, but my god it’s like he’s getting worse. If we can get a comparable aged top 6 C, I’m all for it.
