Really difficult to get to the bottom of this, but I've spent many hours thinking about it and what I can conclude is this: Flames management believes Forbort is significantly better than Davidson.
He is not a good defenseman though... I've watched many Kings games over the years and he always stood out to me as the worst player on the ice.

True but he said better than Davidson. The flames think Stone is better than Davidson....think about that for a minute...lol

I honestly think Stone and Kylington are way better players than Forborg... time will tell and hope he surprises me.

I don't know seen like 10 games of the Kings this year and he stood out as bad defensively. My friend is a King's fan and said we will have fun with him... I really hope he plays better than he has.

I don't like to wish injury on anyone, but one can hope Hamonic is done for the season. I can't take anymore of Hanifin-Hamonic and you know the instant Hamonic is healthy they are going back together and Andersson is getting jettisoned off that pairing.

Gio seems to be ready to go in the next game or two, so our top 4 should be:
Gio-Brodie
Hanifin-Andersson

Now if we had Laviolette he'd just ride the f*** out of these 4 and the 3rd pair would get next to no ice time, but we have Ward so our 3rd pairing regardless of what is on it will get wayy too many minutes.

It's little things like this that make coaches like Quennville and Laviolette elite and always able to get the most out of their rosters. We haven't really had this element since Bob Hartley.

I'm disappointed that Treliving didn't make a deal to improve our top six forwards but to be honest I'm not at all surprised that he didn't. He did exactly what I expected... pick up one or two (in this case 2) depth d-men and call it a day.
Fingers crossed that the Flames actually make it into the playoffs. If they do I'll be shocked if they make it out of the 1st round as we just don't seem to have that top 6 sniper who's dangerous every time the puck is on his stick in the o-zone. I was hoping we would find one today. Instead, we got castoff defensemen.
Agreed, maybe Czarnik is our man.

Calgary Flames

Trending: Down

If the Flames had managed to acquire the 2019 version of Erik Gustafsson from Chicago, then this might be a different story. But instead they got the current version, which means Gustafsson brings some offensive pop but also lots of defensive liabilities to a team whose strength was already the blue line. And for a team that had been in the market for a top-six winger, preferably one on the right side, the Flames came up empty and as a result have to find a way to shoulder their way into the playoffs with the guys already in the room. I don’t like their chances given their peculiar inability to even remotely approach their level of play from last season when they were the top team in the Western Conference. The fact that Gustafsson and Derek Forbort, another defensive depth piece acquired from Los Angeles for a conditional fourth-round pick in 2021, do not make the Flames appreciably better than they were suggests the chances are excellent they’ll be on the outside looking in come April.

This reads like it was written by someone with a very loose concept of the NHL and the Flames, to be honest.

- Arguing that two "versions" of Gustafsson exist, separated only by an off-season and with no actual justification for that take is silly. Differences in how he's looked can just as easily be a product of the run-'n-gun system Colliton has instilled.
- Is considering an outdated version of the Flames' team need and apparently isn't aware of how they have changed recently.
- Ignores the ways that an offensive defenceman and PP specialist actually do fit team needs.
- Either pretends that replacing Yelesin and Stone with these two isn't an upgrade, or isn't currently aware that those are the two players being replaced, and I'm honestly not sure which.

I think we'll still make it comfortably (fingers crossed), but I don't have high hopes for much more. We essentially stood pat considering our injuries, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. I think the big moves will happen this summer barring a deep playoff run.

He's not wrong that our blueline is a position of strength, but if we were actually utilizing it to even 75% of its full capability we'd be running away with the Pacific division title.

We've been treading water for 63 games and these acquisitions don't change that unless we use them smartly. I'm warming to the Gus trade mainly because my eyes are aching to see a Dman score a one-time bomb from the point. If this guy unlocks something in our special teams, we could be in for a fun time

I don't care how it is written or read, I know we will lose Brodie and Hamonic for nothing and we pissed away all those picks for Hamonic.

I just hope Brad Trevling is fired, he has been here for 6 years and nothing to show for it.

I think Hamonic leaving, at this point with what he brings and what we have on the roster, won't hurt the Flames in any way. Brodie leaving is more concerning, but if he does leave, we'll have cap room to replace him with a UFA.

Honestly, the difference from one GM to the next isn't that big, especially with their assistants and consultants helping them with decisions. Whether he gets fired or stays likely is a drop in the bucket next to the much bigger factor which is how the players on the team progress from year to year.

Hanifin Anderson and Brodie arent exactly Chara Lidstrom and Pronger so you can ride the fk out of them.

Wishful thinking that top4 can carry them to anywhere else but burnt-out-city, esp with our "top" forwards, who for the most part couldnt give less of a fk to help out to defend.

Nor have Chara, Lidstrom and Pronger played together on an NHL team. This post makes no sense because it's Fanta C!

Brodie is a player you can ride the f*** out of. Hartley did to the second round. Actually Hartley also rode Russell, Wideman, Engelland with all those guys getting major minutes. Kylington, Andersson, even Hanifin are better than Russell and Wideman in my opinion. And Giordano should be healthy this time around and is a major upgrade on Deryk Engelland.

Being able to ride your best defensemen is a coaching skill.

Laviolette road Nashville's top 4 to the Stanley Cup Finals. You don't need 4 HoF'ers.

If you know that Brodie and Hamonic are going to leave and not stay, you trade them for what ever you can get. We traded very good assets for Hamonic and it was all a waste.

This team has no identity, no direction.

You do if you aren't in the playoffs, yes.
