I tried posting this before but since I started a new job working 60+ hours a week I wasn't sure how many updates I could post. I think I can still keep up ok with this so I'll try again. Again not sure anyone will care but it's fun for me.

Surprise Expansion Announcement!

The NHL announced today that effective immediately the Seattle Totems were opening operations. Seemingly out of nowhere the team popped up and in exchange for a smaller expansion fee they will not have an expansion draft. The team starts with absolutely nothing.
Totems announce GM!
Totems have announced that Rodney McKay is taking over control of the hockey operations as GM. He has no experience at all in the hockey world coming from a academia background. Training Camp Report
Totems Open Camp with no expectations and roster battles galore

With just a couple months to prepare a roster, it is a truly open battle for spots everywhere. Below are the roster breakdown.

Goalie: Kari Lehtonen and Steve Mason are basically locks for the roster. 23 year old Andrei Kareyev is the wildcard but is facing an uphill battle. Matt Galajda and Stephen Dhillon are expected to battle for backup role in AHL.

Defense: Tobias Enstrom, Jakub Jerabek, Brandon Davidson, Paul Martin and Cody Franson are expected to be locks. The last 2 spots are expected to be contended by NHL vets Frank Corrado, Paul Postma, Marc-Andre Gragnani, and Ryan Sproul. European veteran Michal Cajkovsky and college signee Ian Scheid are expected to be dark horses. Mattias Goransson, Alec McCrea, Thomas Gregoire, and Colton Poolman are minor league bound.

Forwards: LW Jiri Hudler, LW Mike Cammalleri, C Mike Letestu, C Antoine Vermette, RW Rick Nash, RW Lee Stempniak, RW Drew Stafford, RW Jussi Jokinen, RW Jannik Hansen are considered locks for the roster. LW Scottie Upshall, LW Daniel Winnik, C Nick Shore, RW Jussi Jokinen, RW Tommy Wingels are considered likely to make the roster. LW Dwight King, LW Shane Prince, LW Tomas Jurco, RW Emerson Etem, RW Logan Shaw, RW Brandon Kozun, RW Alex Chiasson are considered the bubble players. Young players LW Ryan Kuffner, C Nico Sturm, C Mason Bergh, Tyler Wong, RW Max Veronneau, RW Tyler Sheehy, and RW Nick Halloran are considered longshots. It will be a full on battle.

October Update
October 4, 2018

Totems lose franchise opener on road

Totems lose 5-2 to the San Jose Sharks in their franchise opener. Jonas Donskoi opened the scoring but C/LW Mike Cammalleri scores the first goal in Totems history later in the first to tie the game. San Jose added 2 goals in 2nd and despite Rick Nash making it 3-2 early in the 3rd but San Jose adds two more to finish it off.

October 8, 2018
Totems make minor move

After starting 0-3 the Totems have moved AHL forwards RW Alex Chiasson and LW Dwight King to Dallas for a 2019 6th round pick. Stars needed to add a depth winger and former Star rookie standout Chiasson will add depth for them along with King. The Totems had too many veterans in AHL for roster spots with the 5 veteran limit so it clears up room for them.

October 23, 2018
Totems make trade after disaster start

Totems have started out to a pathetic 0-8-1 start and have consequently made a move that should help the defense out. Totems have acquired LD Brendan Smith and his anchor contract (3 years remaining at 4.35 AAV) in exchange for depth forward Emerson Etem. They agreed to take on the negative value contract in the most important point, but clearly the Totems feel he can be a player on their weak blueline.

October 26, 2018
Totems shake up roster with big trade after 0-9-1 start

Totems have traded their biggest offseason pickup RW Rick Nash along with RW Drew Stafford to the St. Louis Blues for RW Nikita Soshnikov. Nash has produced 2 goals and 3 points in 7 games to date, while Stafford has 0 points in 6 games. Soshnikov has 0 points in 3 games to date. GM McKay answered questions very frankly to the shakeup.

Reporter: Nash was the Totems highest paid player at 3.5 million and the biggest signing of the off-season, why was he dealt so early?
McKay: Rick Nash is a solid player. We loved Nash. But he is 34 years old. After our disaster start clearly we are not making playoffs. Blues made a young winger available that we liked it was the price we had to pay.
Reporter: Why did you not save Nash for a deadline deal for more future assets?
McKay: Soshnikov is a guy we really liked. He is only 25 years old. We think he has great potential. He is a guy that can help us a bit now, but likely at least as much as a pick would help us in the future. We gave up some veterans now, but we have a guy that can be here for a decade.

November Update
November 17, 2018

Totems make 6 player trade

Totems have made yet another big roster shakeup early into their disastrous inaugural season. At 1-18-1 the team has moved out veteran LD Paul Martin (19gp, 3pts, -6) along with LW Shane Prince (13gp, 1g, 2pts, -6) and RD Alex McCrea (ECHL 18gp, 4g, 13pts, -3) in exchange for RD Mark Pysyk (10gp, 0pts, -5), C Derek MacKenzie (18gp, 1g, 3pts, -9), and LW Dryden Hunt (No GP). The Panthers get some depth on the blueline along with a borderline player. The Totems get a younger guy on a overpriced contract in Pysyk along with a veteran that might have been the captain but is clearly no longer NHL quality.

January Update
January 12, 2019

Totems move out veteran Hudler, announce 4 re-signings including leading scorer Kozun

Totems have traded LW Jiri Hudler along with DAL 2019 6th round pick to Tampa Bay for TBL 2nd Round Pick in 2020, TBL 3rd Round Pick in 2019, TBL 3rd round Pick in 2020. Hudler adds some depth scoring for the Lightning at a much cheaper price than a guy like Tatar got last year. Totems get some picks as they try to rebuild. RW Brandon Kozun signs a 2 year extension worth 2.5 million per year. Depth forward Tom Kuhnhackl also signed a 2 year extension worth 1.65 million a year. Captain Antoine Vermette signs on for another year at 1.6 million per year to continue to try to lead this team out of the building phase. G Steve Mason signed a 4 year contract worth 1.95 million per year as they seem to commit to him as the starter for the foreseeable future.

January 15, 2019
Totems claim LD Jake Chelios off waivers

27 year old Chelios has appeared in 47 games at AHL level this year but Detroit decided to give him a chance by placing him on waivers. Totems decide to bank on it with the claim.

January 16, 2019
Totems continue firesale with veteran Enstrom and sign LD Jerabek to an extension

Totems have dealt LD Tobias Enstrom back to the Winnipeg Jets for a 2nd in 2019 and 3rd in 2020. Enstrom adds depth to a Jets team who has struggled along the blueline after not signing LD Josh Morrissey as an RFA this year. LD Jan Jerabek signs a front loaded 2.35million AAV contract for 4 years to continue with the Totems.

January 18, 2019
Totems trade retiring Jussi Jokinen

Just days after Jussi Jokinen tells the team and the world that he will retire at the end of the year the Bruins pick him up for their playoff run in exchange for a 3rd Round Pick in 2021 and RW Karson Kuhlman who has 18g, 35pts in 43 games at ECHL level as a 23 year old. Jokinen will add depth the Bruins roster lacking it for a very low price for the rest of the year.

January 24, 2019
Totems trade G Kari Lehtonen

Totems trade Lehtonen to the Maple Leafs for TOR 4th Round in 2019 and BOS 4th Round in 2019. Maple Leafs were using a 20 year old rookie as a backup and needed some insurance in net going forward. Totems have committed to Mason as the starter going forward.

January 28, 2019
Totems announce 2 extensions

Suspended forward Nikita Soshnikov re-signs on a one year extension worth 930K. He has played a big role since coming over, but has struggled with consistency getting just 9g, 16pts in 39 games. LD Brandon Davidson also re-signed for 3 years worth 2.2mil per year.

Two Playoff teams shore up blueline

Winnipeg Jets have acquired RD T.J. Brodie from Calgary in exchange for rights of 2 prospects C David Gustafsson and LD Giovanni Vallati.
Pittsburgh has acquired RD Mike Green from Detroit for their 1st Rounder in 2019 along with rights to RD Calen Addison and LW Jan Drozg.

February 23, 2019
Deadline Deals start to flood in. Jets make biggest move landing Stepan but at a huge price. Pittsburgh, Washington, and Nashville load up for another run. New York Rangers, New Jersey, Arizona, and Ottawa sell off assets for a rebuild.
To NJD: LD Luca Sbisa. To OTT: C Michael McLeod, Rights to G Akira Schmid
To NYR: LD Victor Mete. To MTL: G Olof Lindbom, Rights to LD Jacob Ragnarsson, NYR 3rd in 2019, NYR 3rd in 2020
To NSH: LD Michael Del Zotto. To VAN: LD Yannick Weber, Rights to RD Spencer Stastney
To WSH: C Gilbert Brule, Rights to C Samuel Houde. To MTL: G Vitek Vanecek, Rights to RD Alex Kannok-Leipert, WSH 4th in 2019, WSH 4th in 2020
To WSH: RW Richard Panik. To ARI: LD Jonas Siegenthaler, WSH 2nd in 2019, WSH 3rd in 2019
To LAK: LD Jake McCabe, Rights to RD Miska Kukkonen. To BUF: G Cal Petersen
To NJD: RD Vyacheslav Voynov, Rights to LD Toni Utunen. To VAN: LD Mirco Muller, Rights to LD Jeremy Davies, NJD 2nd in 2019
To FLA: LW Thomas Vanek. To DET: Rights to LD Max Gildon, PIT 3rd in 2019
To PIT: LW Mats Zuccarello, Rights to RD Joey Keane. To NYR: RW Daniel Sprong, Rights to LD Clayton Phillips
To VGK: LD Jan Rutta. To CHI: Rights to LW Jonas Rondbjerg
To WPG: C Derek Stepan. To ARI: C Michael Spacek, Rights to LD Declan Chisholm, WPG 1st Rd in 2019, WPG 1st Rd in 2020

Totems make a record number of deals on the deadline day as they reshape moving forward.

To SEA: LW Marcus Sorensen, RW Melker Karlsson, RW Joachim Blichfeld. To SJS: LW Scottie Upshall, LW Daniel Winnik, LD Marc-Andre Gragnani, TOR 4th Rd in 2019
On the surface this deal makes little sense for San Jose, but San Jose has been desperately shopping often scratched Karlsson (who has just 5pts in just 30gp) all year. He is owed another 2 million next year. Sorensen had previously been waived and been at AHL level. Upshall and Winnik are valuable veterans for them moving towards the playoffs. The Totems get some decent depth wingers going forward.
To SEA: C Mitch Hults, ANA 3rd in 2022, ANA 4th in 2019. To ANA: RD Cody Franson
Anaheim gets a valuable 4/5 defenseman for a useless ECHL prospect and a couple of mid round picks as Totems start sell off.
To SEA: C Tyler Bozak. To STL: LW Mike Cammalleri
With just 3 goals and 10 points in 41 games and even a heathly scratch at times it was clear Bozak was not working out in St. Louis. With 2 more years at 5 million dollars per year he carried pretty much negative value. He will get a chance to turn things around in a bigger role with Totems. Cammy had 10g, 24pts in 50 games for Totems and can be a depth scoring option for Blues as they attempt to make playoffs.
To SEA: LD Kevin Gravel, LW Nolan Vesey, EDM 3rd Rd in 2019. To EDM: RD Paul Postma, RW Jannik Hansen
Hansen is still a valuable depth piece for playoff bound Oilers. Postma adds depth to the blueline. Gravel has not shown much in NHL, Vesey is a bad prospect.
To SEA: MTL 3rd Rd in 2020. To MTL: RW Lee Stempniak
Depth piece for a mid round pick
To SEA: G Peter Budaj, LAK 2nd in 2021. To LAK: C Mark Letestu, STL 4th in 2019
Letestu was likely the Totems best asset with 11g, 22pts and a +/- of 0 in 57 games proving he can still play. Kings shore up their center ice position. Totems need the high picks, but Budaj allows Kareyev to head back to AHL to finish up year.
To SEA: LW Chris Kunitz, C Marcus Kruger, CHI 2nd in 2019. To CHI: LW Marcus Sorensen, LD Kevin Gravel
A hastily put together deal as Totems move acquired players Sorensen and Gravel to Blackhawks were they should fit in nicely as depth pieces for the playoff hunting Blackhawks. Kruger and Kunitz have been horrendous for Hawks (2assists 17gp and 1g, 2pts 33gp respectively).
To SEA: C Matt Hendricks, MIN 6th in 2019. To MIN: C Marcus Kruger
Kruger was not a piece needed going forward so Totems flip him for useless veteran and a late pick.
To SEA: LW Jori Lehtera, PHI 4th in 2021. To PHI: RW Tommy Wingels
Philedelphia gets rid of Lehtera is the headline, while only giving up a 4th and get a piece that might help down stretch.

February 24, 2019
Totems claim Tanev, re-sign 5

Totems have claimed LW Brandon Tanev off waivers from the Winnipeg Jets. He found himself off roster after Stepan acquistion and he will be a depth piece for the Totems. They've also announced new deals for 5 minor pieces in RD Ryan Sproul, RW Logan Shaw, LW Tomas Jurco, RD Frank Corrado, LW Laurent Dauphin. All are one year deals.

February 26, 2019
Totems claim LW William Carrier

Carrier was claimed off waivers from Golden Knights after struggling this season much like last. The Totems are latest to try to capitalize on his skill that just doesn't seem to translate to success.

Playoff Preview
West
1. Nashville Predators v 8. St. Louis Blues

Anchored by a strong blueline and outstanding goaltending the Predators are heavy favourites. They depend on young scoring up front with Forsberg, Fiala, Tolvanen to bolster veterans Turris, Johansen, Arvidsson. Blues lack the depth of the Predators but have strong top end talent in Tarasenko, Schwartz, O'Reilly, Pietrangelo.
2. Anaheim Ducks v 7. Edmonton Oilers
Ducks are a surprise to finish so high with young players carrying the load with Fowler, Rakell, Kase, Montour, Steel having big roles while veterans Getzlaf, Perry have taken steps back. Oilers depend almost entirely on their top 3 forwards in McDavid, RNH, and Draisaitl and will need them to carry them.
3. Winnipeg Jets v 6. Dallas Stars
Jets are deep and balanced. They addressed their two biggest weaknesses (depth D and 2nd line C) with big in season moves acquiring Brodie and Stepan to make them even more dangerous. Laine, Connor, Wheeler, Scheifele, Ehlers, Byfuglien, Niku, Trouba, Roslovic, Stepan, Brodie is a very hard core. Hellebuyck was just so-so at .917 and might be the question mark. Stars have a young D core and struggled in net this year. Their stars up front in Seguin, Benn, Radulov carry them offensively and they will need lots of goals from them to win.
4. Los Angeles Kings v 5. Vegas Golden Knights
Both teams look very mediocre on paper. Kings are decent all around but depend on Kopitar, Doughty, Quick to lead them. Carter is out for the 1st round. Golden Knights have a solid roster up front led by Karlsson, Smith, Marchessault, Tuch, Stastny, Tatar but outside of Theodore don't have much on D.
East
1. Tampa Bay Lightning v 8. Boston Bruins

Lightning are a strong contender. They have stars in Hedman, Stamkos, Kucherov, Point, Sergachyov, and Vasilevsky but have depth for days. Bruins have not had great goaltending from Rask, and depend too much on two-way guys Bergeron, Marchand, Krejci. They have a few nice young pieces like Pastrnak, McAvoy, Heinen but not enough to hang with the big boys.
2. Washington Capitals v 7. Pittsburgh Penguins
And Crosby v Ovechkin battle comes again. Much like last year it appears the Capitals have too much though. Ovie, Kuznetsov, Oshie, Vrana, Carlson, Backstrom, Orlov along one of the best tandems in the league in Holtby and Samsonov. Pittsburgh has little depth past Crosby, Malkin, Kessel, Letang, Murray.
3. Phildelphia Flyers v 4. New Jersey Devils
Strong veterans in Couturier, Voracek, Giroux, van Riemsdyk, Gostisbehere supported by strong youngsters Patrick, Konecny, Provorov, Lindblom, Sanheim but let down in net with Elliot. The Devils have seen Hischier, Vatanen, Butcher, Zacha break out with great goaltending along with veterans Hall, Palmieri, Johansson means the Devils have a chance here, but unlikely to make a run.
5. Toronto Maple Leafs v 6. Florida Panthers
It's a minor miracle the Leafs made the playoffs with what happened this year. Andersen was mediocre, Marner (40pts), Marleau (33pts), Kadri (27pts), Brown (22pts) were all bad (none missed time with injury). Tavares, Matthews and Nylander carried a poor roster to the playoffs. The surprising Panthers stand a good shot here with an underrated roster led by Barkov but the island of misfit toys in Luongo, Dadonov, Hoffman, Yandle were key pieces to the core of Huberdeau, Bjugstad, Ekblad, Matheson.

That would be a mildly disappointing season for Colorado but I see they are in pole position along with your Totems to potentially snag Jack Hughes thanks to Ottawa being every bit as bad as I want them to be!

Florida really did poorly trading Trochek at that price especially compared to what the worse and older Stepan brought back.

On the other hand, many of the deadline deals seem pretty plausible. Of course Habs gonna Hab so they sell the young crown jewel of their blueline rebuild in Mete for a bag of beans. Lol.

I lost the draft lottery (picking 4th). Don't really have assets to move up so I am hoping that Turcotte (ranked 5th) is still there or I will be taking Byram probably which sucks. I stopped last night just before draft, will be doing a draft review post soonish. The post-offseason/pre training camp update will be later cause I want to make sure teams do things right in off-season (ie get Morrissey back from KHL lol). But yeah I agree deadline deals except really Mete and Trocheck deal weren't too bad.

Keeping a consistent schedule when I'm randomly working 16 hours some days is hard. Catching up with some stuff that I've already played past. The off-season will take a while as I try to make CPU teams not being idiots.

Pre-Draft Analysis

June 7, 2019
Kraken add 4 European UFA's

Kraken have added some help from in Europe. 23yo C Pius Suter, 24yo LW Martin Reway, 24 LD Matus Holenda, and 23yo LW Dominik Kubalik have come over. Kubalik and Suter are two way threats that can contribute right away, Reway is a skilled forward with a troubled past who is a low risk high reward player while Holenda is an undersized defenseman who is solid all around but not sure how he will adapt to smaller ice.

June 19, 2019
Kraken add top NCAA UFA Jimmy Schuldt

24yo Schuldt out of St. Cloud was one of the top 5 NCAA UFA's and the only one the Totems manage to land despite being in on many. Schuldt is a solid leader with a big shot but has many holes in his game.

Draft Day!
Totems are set to begin their first draft day. The team has announced a pair of trades on the eve of the draft. GM McKay said while the team explored the options to move up in the draft after losing the lottery the prices were too high so just minor moves were made.
Totems trade RW Nick Halloran and LD Ian Scheid to Dallas for LD Gavin Bayreuther and MIN 4th in 2019
Halloran and Scheid are two mediocre prospects that have shown flashes but did not put it together last year in AHL. Bayreuther is a borderline 25 year old who might crack the roster next year but more likely an AHL vet.
Totems trade RW Logan Shaw to Ottawa for RW Marian Gaborik, OTT 5th in 2019 and OTT 5th in 2021
Shaw was re-signed to an ill thought out extension after playing well for a month pre-deadline. To get out from that contract Totems take on the much bigger Gaborik contract for buyout purposes (despite McKay's irrational love of Gaborik but he is done) and get two picks in the deal.

Totems take LD Byram Bowen 4th overall
McKay admitted the totems top 3 all went off the board in the top 3, but Bowen is a nice consolation prize. He is a determined player that skates, passes, and stickhandles at an NHL level already, albeit still struggles in the defensive game. He scored 34goals, 82points in just 64 games this year in WHL.
Totems take C Albin Grewe 33rd Overall
The determined Swede has a strong all around game but doesn't stand out in any one way. His strongest comparable is Sharks C Logan Couture and that's what the Totems are hoping for.
Totems take G Dustin Wolf 45th Overall
The LA native is very undersized for an NHL goalie but has some of the best reflexes anyone has ever seen from an 18 year old. He is determined which is good since he needs to be worked on quite a bit.
Totems acquire pick #46 from San Jose for pick #60 and pick #65
Totems take C Henri Nikkanen 46th Overall

The big Finn from Norway is another solid all around C with great potential but the question mark is his determination. Has great defensive skill, solid skating, with a decent shot.
Totems take RD Noah Laaouan 83rd Overall
The small determined defender moves the puck well with a good shot and good skating, but again needs alot of rounding out.
Totems take RW Alex Beaucage 95th Overall
The thick build RW has a solid twoway game and sees the ice well. He likes to play with grit and grinds it out.
Totems trade pick #97 to Tampa Bay for pick #127 and pick #159
Totems take LD Layton Ahac 112th Overall

The determined LD has committed to move on to Ohio State next year has a strong hockey sense. He moves the puck decently, works hard, skates ok. He has comparables to Josh Manson but has many years of development ahead.
Totems take RD Libor Zabransky 125th Overall
After being passed over last year the slick skating, passing, shooting defenseman has a knack for playing big in big situations. The Czech born Kelowna defenseman has great potential but could be an outright bust just as easy.
Totems take LW Oliver Okuliar 127th Overall
For the 2nd straight pick Totems take a guy who was passed over last year. The Slovak playing in QMJHL is one of the most determined players in the draft while having a solid hockey sense. He loves to muck it up, but struggles with skills and his skating is just ok. Potential as a nice grinder with upside.
Totems take C Mitchell Russell 129th Overall
Russell is a traditional goalscorer with a solid wrist shot, good awareness to find soft spots and a good skater. He is determined to improve the rest of his game which is very raw.
Totems take C Trevor Kuntar 130th Overall
Kuntar is all about what's between the ears. Committed to Harvard, he was off the roof in the interview. He sees the ice well, is determined, works well with others, and skates ok, but his skills need a lot of work.
Totems take LD Nathan Allensen 159th Overall
Considered by some the steal of the draft the smooth skating undersized defenseman stickhandles really well and passes extremely well and works real hard but has massive holes in his game. A project but one with huge upside.
Totems take LD Mike Koster 161st Overall
Totems clearly have a type. Another small determined smooth skating smooth passing solid shooting defenseman with big holes in the defensive game. He is committed to Minnesota for next year.
Totems take C Gleb Murtazin 176th Overall
The Russian center playing in USHL is determined with smooth skating and solid shot he has been compared to a young Jeff Carter. His defensive game is atrocious to this point though.
Totems take RW Alexei Sergeyev 193rd Overall
The tiny Russian winger has top end potential with his hockey sense, speed, and shot and while his all around game is ok he is considered a long shot to be an impact player. But if he pays off he could be a top player.
Totems trade RW Karson Kuhlman to Nashville for pick #224 and NSH 6th in 2020
Totems take LW Jack Jensen 224th Overall

Totems traded to get this pick since this other Minnesota commit again was great in the the interview and skates well. The rest of his game is hugely raw but the upside is big.

So in summary
1 - #4 - LD Bowen Bryam (Vancouver, WHL)
2 - #33 - C Albin Grewe (Djurgardens IF J20, SWEU20)
2 - #45 - G Dustin Wolf (Everett, WHL)
2 - #46 - C Henri Nikkanen (Jukurit, SM-Liiga)
3 - #83 - RD Noah Laaouan (Cape Breton, QMJHL)
3 - #95 - RW Alex Beaucage (Rouyn-Noranda, QMJHL)
4 - #112 - LD Layton Ahac (Prince George, BCHL)
4 - #125 - RD Libor Zabransky (Kelowna, WHL)
4 - #127 - LW Oliver Okuliar (Sherbrooke, QMJHL)
5 - #129 - C Mitchell Russell (Owen Sound, OHL)
5 - #130 - C Trevor Kuntar (Youngstown, USHL)
5 - #159 - LD Nathan Allensen (Barrie, OHL)
6 - #161 - LD Mike Koster (Chaska, HS-MIN)
6 - #176 - C Gleb Murtazin (Green Bay, USHL)
7 - #193 - RW Alexei Sergeyev (Quebec, QMJHL)
7 - #224 - LW Jack Jensen (Eden Prairie, HS-MIN)

Overall Draft (Pick - Team - Player (Rank) - Team)
1 - Vancouver Canucks - C Jack Hughes (1) - USNDTP, USHL

Hughes is a phenom. Already a #1C that plays both ends he is at least a Jack Eichel. Canucks finally got something to build on.
2 - Arizona Coyotes - C Alex Turcotte (5) - USNDTP, USHL
Basically a lesser version of Hughes. A strong two way player with a great attitude and strong hockey IQ he should be a day one NHLer. Perhaps struggles a bit right in close to the net, but he is a great everywhere else.
3 - Detroit Red Wings - RW Kaapo Kakko (2) - Dynamo, KHL
Basically another phenom in this draft. Kakko does everything well an instant day 1 NHLer. Has everything you'd want from a franchise winger.
4 - Seattle Totems - LD Bowen Byram (3) - Vancouver, WHL
Another great mental player like the first 3, he adds fantastic skating, passing and stickhandling to the package. Has holes in the defensive game.
5 - Colorado Avalanche - C Alex Newhook (6) - Victoria, BCHL
Another strong mental player, he has elite skating as well. Spent the year dominating the BCHL it remains to be seen how he does at the next level. Has a very good shot, very good passing and positioning well. Still has a few holes but Kyle Turris is a reasonable comparable but some have Matt Duchene which is fitting considering the team.
6 - New York Islanders - RW Dylan Cozens (7) - Lethbridge, WHL
A star from the Yukon is rare enough but Cozens has top end potential. He is determined and has perhaps the best all around game of any player in the draft. But his skating and overall skills are still developing. Has good hands around the net but needs to find how he will contribute at next level.
7 - Carolina Hurricanes - LD Matthew Robertson (11) - Edmonton, WHL
Carolina drafting at #7 and they take a big, good skating defenseman from the Oil Kings again. Will it work out this time? He passes well, shoots well and is determined though so he might work out better.
8 - Buffalo Sabres - G Spencer Knight (4) - USNDTP, USHL
Committed to Boston College Knight dominated with a stacked USNDTP but his long term potential is still questionable as it is with all goalies. Beyond determined he has little to stand out.
9 - Calgary Flames - C Kirby Dach (8) - Saskatoon, WHL
The best passer in the draft with great size he is determined to improve. Has great stickhandling and has great hockey sense. Struggles with skating and all around game. He could be Joe Thornton, but something around Kevin Hayes is also possible.
10 - Montreal Canadiens - C Ryan Suzuki (13) - Barrie, OHL
Great hockey sense, determined, good skater, good stickhandler, good passer he has the all around skills. But has nothing to differentiate himself and needs work everywhere.
11 - Columbus Blue Jackets - C Blake Murray (10) - Sudbury, OHL
Another good skater determined player with solid passing and solid shot he has good potential. Likely not game breaking potential.
12 - New York Rangers - LW Peyton Krebs (14) - Kootenay, WHL
Flair for days and can stickhandle inside a phone booth while seeing a guy across the rink but struggles in corners and in front of the net. Elite offensive potential.
13 - Chicago Blackhawks - G Colten Ellis (27) - Rimouski, QMJHL
First big reach is for Chicago to get a replacement goalie for Crawford. He is determined with solid reflexes, positioning but struggles with rebounds and his skating. Still needs lots of work.
14 - Buffalo Sabres - C Valentin Nussbaumer (21) - Shawinigan, QMJHL
Another bit of a reach but a great pick. He is nearly NHL ready with a great all around game in both ends.
15 - Colorado Avalanche - LW Vasili Podkolzin (26) - SKA-1946, MHL
Shot up after strong interviews, good skater but his skills still need work.
16 - Minnesota Wild - LW Samuel Poulin (20) - Sherbrooke, QMJHL
Determined with good passing, solid shot, but poor skater.
17 - Boston Bruins - C Trever Zegras (19) - USNDTP, USHL
Buried at C on USNDTP he has great stickhandling and skating along with great hockey sense perhaps a home run despite being behind Hughes and Turcotte.
18 - Buffalo Sabres - LD Michael Vukojevic (9) - Kitchener, OHL
Buffalo had a goalie and forward already so they go D. Vukojevic is an old school D that hits, positions well and has a cannon shot.
19 - Edmonton Oilers - LW Dmitri Sheshin (16) - Metallurg Mg, KHL
As is common had just 12pts in 35gp in KHL this year. Tiny at just 5'9'' 149lbs but skates well with great passing and stickhandling. Will be a star or a bust.
20 - Detroit Red Wings - LW Arthur Kaliyev (15) - Hamilton, OHL
Great hockey sense, but mediocre on the ice he has good potential as a sniper.
21 - Florida Panthers - LW Nolan Foote (30) - Kelowna, WHL
Much like his father a throwback, he is a power forward with a wicked wrist shot that grinds and fights but struggles with skating and all around game. Questioned on determination.
22 - Toronto Maple Leafs - RW Raphael Lavoie (12) - Halifax, QMJHL
The big winger is among the biggest slider. He is determined and is among the most all around players but doesn't stand out nearly anywhere.
23 - Dallas Stars - RW Maxim Cajkovic (17) - Saint John, QMJHL
Perhaps the best shot in the draft. Great skater. Horrendous defensive game.
24 - Vegas Golden Knights - LW Matthew Boldy (22) - USNDTP, USHL
Determined with excellent two way skills, he is an odd case. Great in key skills, struggles in odd and ends. Question marks about how much he was helped by teammates.
25 - Los Angeles Kings - RD Anttoni Honka (18) - JYP, SM-Liiga
Plays much like his brother with great passing and skating. However he has far less all around skill compared to his brother and a terrible year albeit among men in Finland led to his falling from pre-season ranking.
26 - New Jersey Devils - RD Nikita Okhotyuk (34) - Ottawa, OHL
A true all around defenseman, he was a big of a reach as many see his upside as a better Esa Lindell.
27 - Philadelphia Flyers - RD Victor Soderstrom (28) - Brynas J20, Swe20
Great passer and skater with an excellent interview he is very very raw.
28 - Arizona Coyotes - RW Cole Caulfield (24) - USNDTP, USHL
The tiny detemined winger has a wicked shot but lacks an overall game. Many attribute his ridiculous 36g, 6a season to the great USNDTP C's.
29 - Anaheim Ducks - LD Ben Brinkman (29) - Minnesota, NCAA
Very determined, with solid skating, solid passing, solid shot is a prototypical new age defenseman.
30 - Washington Capitals - C Jakob Pelletier (33) - Moncton, QMJHL
The tiny center skates incredibly well, passes and stickhandled very well. Great offensive awareness but question marks remain about the boom or bust prospect.
31 - Tampa Bay Lightning - C Matvei Guskov (36) - London, OHL
Great defensive game, great interview, the questions revolve around his offensive upside.
32 - Nashville Predators - LW Xavier Parent (49) - Halifax, QMJHL
Poor season had him underrated, great shooter, big determination, great skater. Compared to Jeff Skinner but smaller.
