That's what happens when you coach in a professional sports league. You have to look sharp and professional all the time and not like a slob. It's like wearing a uniform at McDonald's, it's the same concept.

You even see players arrive at the arena in suits because they are technically at work.

Have you not seen NFL coaches

Belichick's cut-off-sleeve hoodies beg to differ

Higher level pee wee teams wear shirts and tie to games, it is part of the culture.

I like it.

Is there a dress code from the league?

I've often wondered the same thing. Why do coaches wear suits? Is it just to look professional, or is it a rule? You would think a coach would dress more casually more often, even if it is just jeans and a sweater, let alone a hoodie.

Yes there is a dress code in the league. Players, as well as coaches, are required to wear suits when arriving at the game/during it. You can't even not wear a suit as a healthy scratch.

Haha love Torts!! One of the best easily.

Have no problem with him throwing on a hoody if he's feeling sick, guy is dedicated and wants to be there with the team. League isn't going to have an issue with it as well.

Burnside: Dress code suits NHLers just fine
Stu Cowan: Game day dress code isn’t preferred fit for all Canadiens

The dress code for players is written into the CBA. From 2005, this specific language has remained in place in subsequent CBA renegotiation(s). Similar language existed previously, dating back to 1995.

Exhibit 14, Paragraph 5 reads: "Players are required to wear jackets, ties and dress pants to all Club games and while traveling to and from such games unless otherwise specified by the Head Coach or General Manager."

Humorously, Scott Burnside has this nugget from 2005:

Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella has a "no jeans" rule for his team. He said it's merely an extension of what he believes should be his team's unwavering focus on preparation and how they should conduct themselves on and off the ice.

As an assistant coach with the U.S. entry in the 2005 World Championships, Tortorella was unimpressed with the "casual dress" standards imposed on the team during training camp in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Some guys were wearing jeans with holes in them, Tortorella said. "I thought we looked like slobs. … You say casual to these guys, and they'll push it right to the limit."

He does not.

But that is what they said!

People in day to day language often do not make distinction between cold and flu, but they said flu like symptom not that he was really suffering from influenza.

Even still. The way germs roll through locker rooms.

It's quite interesting how the coaches of the different leagues have different outfits - suits in NHL/NBA, jerseys in MLB, windbreakers etc. in NFL

I think it's a fresh breath of air into this league, and to the sport. We are used to hockey coaches always wearing suits to matches.

But I still find it nice to see in soccer where there are so many different managers (coaches) who all dress differently, and you can also see their personality from it. You have the Jurgen Klopp who wears the club track suit and celebrates like a little kid after every goal, and on the other side you have some Italian manager who wears a custom made suit and barely reacts when his side scores a goal. Would love to see more of these personalities in hockey (not just the NHL), and Torts is surely one of the first that comes to mind who could pull this off. Good on him.

When you think of it, it makes sense to wear something warmer in an arena. As long as it looks good, go for it.

I think smart casual e.g. no ties, cardigan over a shirt, etc., is fine along with dress pants.

Coach should look like authority without looking too stiff.

The idea of track-suits and hoodies on a coach on game-day isn't a great look unless in Torts case you're sick and cold.

Am I the only one who wants to see Dustin Byfuglien come along and swirly Torts or whatever he did to Evander Kane for not being in a suit? It would be great. Seeing Torts with his head in the bowl and Buff taping off the area with "fashion police line: do not cross" caution tape, and telling people "move along folks, nothing to see here."

Would not call Buff ”fashion-police” since it was his idea with the ”ugly suit trip” last season

You do remember the EK thing right? Kane showed up in sweats or something and Buff threw them in the shower because the rules said wear a suit IIRC. He enforces that letter of the law, not the interpretation. It says wear a suit. You better be wearing a GD suit, or you'll be leaving in your birthday suit.

Maybe not be around the team with the flu?
Yeah, he should take notes from Oleg Znarok, who coached the team via radio from the upstairs stands when he was banned from coaching the Russian national team after showing a cut-throat sign during a game
